The great trek, with its hundreds of thousands: of pilgrims, presents one of the biggest regional health problems of its kind in Asia. The rules, which will be submit- ted to the world health assembly are aimed not only at preventing the spread of epidemics among the numerous pilgrims who visit the Holy Land at Hedjaz but also at protecting the health of the local Arab population. At the same time, the rules seek to ease some of the existing irksome health restrictions on pilgrims. Mecca, birthplace of Mohamet, lies in Saudi Arabia: A pilgrimage to it is one of the five sacred duties which each of the world's 200,000,000 Moslems hopes to perform during his lifetime, Last year, 500,000 pil- grims visited Mecca. The pilgrimage season is not fixed because by the Moslem lunar cal- endar the new year comes 11 days earlier each year, This year it is in September. During the next 10 or 15 years, W.H.O. experts say, the pilgrimage will fall in a bad cycle of hot, un- healthy months when heat and sun- stroke take heavy toll of the pil- grims. But the main concern of the world health organization is epidemic diseases such as cholera and small- POX. The spread of epidemics is helped by the absence of modern sanitary conditions in Saudi Arabia. W.HO. hopes that with its active financial and technical assistance, these con- ditions will steadily improve. The | new rules stipulate that there should be at least one doctor to every 1,000 pilgrims. Western 0il Line Formally Opened Superior, Wis.,, May 25--(AP)-- Governor Walter J.
