PAGE SIXTEEN «HE DAILY TIMES-GAZ ETTE ™a SATURDAY, MAY 19, 1951, PLAZA KETTLE COMEDY HITS MARK IN ZANY FUN NEW HIGH Marjorie Mann and Percy Kil- bride, in their screen portrayals of Ma and Pa Kettle, continue to get funnier and funnier with each new entry in the popular Universal-In- ternational comedy series. "Ma and Pa Kettle Back on the Farm," which opens Monday at the Plaza Theatre, is the third of the hilarious series and emerges as the brightest, zaniest screen fun offered by the Kettle clan since the series grew out of their initial appearance in the screen version of Betty Mac- Donald's best-selling novel, "The Egg and 1." Gravel-voiced Marjorie Main "and nasal-twanged Percy Kilbride, plus their 15 kids, romp among such guf- - faw-gimmicks as a Geiger counter, a collapsible chicken coop, a run- away touring car, a newborn baby, radioactive coveralls and a home- ,made orange juice squeezer. What happens is better to be witnessed than to be chronicled in this re- view, Notable performances with the Main-Kilbride team are turned 'in by Richard Long and Meg Randall, the young married couple who con- tribute the one semblance of sanity to the Kettle films; Ray Collins, playing a retired business executive who finally gets up enough nerve to turn on his domineering wife, portrayed by Barbara Brown; Oliver Blake and Teddy Hart, seen as Pa Kettle's two Indian pals, both stand- ard menibers of the Kettle comedies and Emory Parnell, as storekeeper Billy Reed. Produced by Leonard Goldstein, who also guided the previous Ma and Pa Kettle successes, "Ma and Pa Kettle Back on the Farm" bene- fits greatly from the deft comedy touch of Director Edward Sedgwick, a pioneer moviemaker. Musical score is by Joseph Gershenson and Jack Henley receives story and screenplay credit. 'Ma and Pa Kettle Back on the Farm' should delight all kids from REGENT "THE SWORD OF MONTE CRISTO" AND "THE WALT DISNEY FETSIVAL". COMING ON WED. TO THE REGENT The search for treasure and the glory of empire play prominent parts in the dramatic development of "The Sword of Monte Cristo," richly spectacular historical adven- ture film in Supercinecolor which opens on the 24th at the Regent. Heading the notable cast are George Montgomery as the rugged Captain Renault, guardsman, and Paula Corday, ravishingly lovely Tahitan beauty cast as a masked cavalier and statesman's niece. The Supercinecolor process with which the film is treated is itself newsmaking entertainment, for it distinguishes '""The Sword of Monte Cristo" with the brilliance and beauty of natural color that marked advancement in its field. This three-color monopak system of Eastman's which sees service for the first time in the Alperson pres- entation, is a signal event. From every other point of view "The Sword of Monte Cristo" is ar equally impressive and well-round- ed offering. Its casting of the hand- some, rugged Montana born Moni- gomery and breath-taking Tahitan beauty Miss Corday is impeccable. In addition, there is excellent char- acter acting by Berry Kroeger, Wil- liam Conrad, Steve Brodie, Rhys Williams, Robert , Warwick and David Bond and added feminine ap- peal in Lillian Bronson and the cur- vaceous Latin spitfire Acquanetta. Production-wise, "The Swora of Monte Cristo" has spared no ex- nse to stage some displays of duel- ing sklll, horsemanship and a re- creation of nineteenth century Eu- rope. Similarly, the script and di- rection, with screen-play author Maurice Geraghty doubling as di. rector, are faithful to the spirit of Alexandre Dumas, from whose work "The Sword of Monte Cristo' has ing, suspense and spectacle packed adventure and sweeping romantic pageantry are the ingredients of al- together superior film fare in "The Sword of Monte Cristo." Added Treats On the same program will be seen "The Walt Disney Festival' featur- ing five Disney Color Cartoons, mak- ing a memorable holiday program.
