MOWDAY, APRIL 30, 1951 THE DAILY -TIMES-GAZETTE: PAGE SEVEN In Jhe dome A Physician Advises You By HERMAN M. BUNDESEN, M.D. CLUB FEET ; vy children are born with ml a condition in which the fet turn inward 0 such a degree that the child is forced to walk on the side Talis than on the of the foot. DOL rately, treatment is fairly simple and, if it is begun within a few weeks of pirth, the diffi- culty can be overcome in nearly all cases. Its sucess depends: on the fact that an infant's tissues are soft and malleable so that, with patience, the foot can gradu- ally be moulded into the proper ition. pos Flannel Bandages A recently suggested treatment uses nothing more than moleskin adhesive, flannel bandages, ordi- nary adhesive tape, and skill on the part of the physician. Three adhesive straps, put on over the foot and around the heel, are carried upward over the knee and then down again to the middle of the calf. With these straps, the foot is forced into the normal position, or the position of the foot is overcorrected to a slight degree. After the straps have been put on, the baby is observed for a period of one-half to one hour to make sure they do not interfere with the circulation. If the toes turn blue or white, the straps must be loosened. The parents also are tch the toes for physician at once. Nevertheless, it is still important for the physician to observe the patient the following day just to be sure the straps are not too tight. Original Strapping About two days after the origi- nal strapping, which has been covered by a flannel bandage, or- dinary adhesive tape is put over the flannel bandage in the same way as the original strapping. This aids in further correcting the condition. Each week thereafter the bandage strapping is removed and reapplied. Usually from three to six weeks are enough to bring the foot into an overcorrected position. Now and then the moleskin ad- hesive may irritate the skin. In such cases, it must be removed and only flannel bandages used until the skin is healed. Position of Foot Once the position of the foot is corrected, the strapping is repeated every two weeks and then finally once a month. By the fourth or fifth month the baby may be permitted to 80 without any strapping for several days at a time. When the youngster begins to walk, the strapping is entirely discontinued and corrective shoes are employed. The feet must be examined at intervals just to make sure the condition does not return. GLAMORIZING:- Walking Your Way to Beauty By HELEN FOLLETT . A brisk walk every day peps you up and is good for yeur figure, too. Wear comfortable clothes--such as a suit or loose coat--and sturdy shoes. Be a Mrs. Walker. Get out every day and hoof it. No time, | you say? If you are a career girl you can chase around the block at the lunch hour, If you are a homebody you can go to market instead of giving your order over the telephone. A brisk walk is not only good for your figure, keep- ing your musculature in condi- tion, but it is of cosmetic value. Your pump oxygen into your lungs, the blood streams romp, pretty roses appear in your cheeks. Un- less you have some form of out- door exercise all the year round you may collect adipose cushions, lose the svelte shape. Walk as if you were glad to be alive; don't stroll; that will be of no help at all if you would retain youthful lines. Dress properly. Your feet ust be comfortable, if you are to have a light easy step. The best shoes for the pur- pose are those with leather tops and flexible leather seles. They should be sufficiently wide and BEAUTY FOR YOU:- Make-Up for the White Haired By HELEN Time was, and not so long ago, when elderly women were frowned upon if they applied synthetic coloring to their cheeks, touched their lips with the cherry-red pen- cil. A lot of nonsense. The old girls are the ones who need a little complexion freshening; younger ones are usually blessed with a cer- tain amount of coloring. But when life's activities slow up a bit, strenuous exercise is forbidden by old Family Doc. lags, why not compensate for these changes by playing with the rouge compact? Highlighting the com- plexion makes Grandma feel gay- er, has a psychological effect upon her disposition. You can't feel sour when you look sweet. Isn't it the truth? The ancients-and-honorables among us are up and coming, They travel under their own steam. When it comes to good looks and smart appearance they are in step with the beauty parade. And heed these words: years may rob one of beauty, but it may take years to learn to be charming and attrac- tive. If life teaches a woman any- thing, it is that arguments are fu- tile, that you can't change people and shouldn't try, and that the big aim is to get along happily with one's fellow creatures. It is true, of course, that the white-haired woman must go easy when playing with make-up. A little will make her countenance more vivid and interesting, a bit too much will make her look older. That rule holds good for the middle-aged as well as those who are in the autumn of life. Even a pretty young girl can lose some of her loveliness if she doesn't know how to use rouge, paint her lips cleverly and evenly. In old age the skin often takes on a delicate, transparent quality. Hence the need of using rouge of a faint, wild-rose tint, so there will not be too great a contrast with and circulation |- JAMESON ® ® long to give your toes wriggling | room, but they must be snug en- ough to provide support. Don't swing your hips or your shoulders. Keep your backbone extended full length. Keep the chest high and expanded so you will lap up the fresh air, pulling it down into the very cellars of your lungs. Let your arms swing easily. Rhythmic Breaths Take long, rhythmic breaths-- an inhalation and exhalation to a certain number of steps. Keep your head balanced. Too many women send the head ahead of the body, looking as if they were peering at something, The pose does not make them pleasing to the eye. The woman with a mincing walk brings her toes down first which is a strain upon them. Other walkers are pounders. They come down hard on the heels which is a yokel-like habit and should be avoided. "Walk in beauty like the night." Make yourself feel radiant. Step lightly. You'll be doing good by your face and your figure. BOILING POTATOES Time 20 to 40 minutes, Drop scrubbed potato into a small amount of boiling water. Cover tightly and bring water back to boiling as soon as possible. Reduce heat until potato is tender. Drain. Serve at once. Boiling peeled pota- toes results in a 50 per cent loss of vitamin C. Mashing potatoes re- sults in a 75 per cent loss of .vita- min C. Potatoes are about 20 per cent starch. One medium potato (about 14 1b.) provides 100 calories. Letting it extend down on the cheeks will produce a drawn look, will accent sagging tissues if they are present. If the skin is extra pale, a deli- cate flesh-colored powder will give it more life and an appearance of finer texture. It should be fluffed on lightly with the lamb's wool pad, a powder brush used to remove the surplus. The lipstick should be a natural tone, neither light red nor deep crimson, so as to have a close color relationship with the rouge compact, DON'T MISS THE BAZAAR = At The -- Legion Hall, Centre Street TUESDAY, MAY 1st -- 8 P.M. Hollywood Highlights Hollywood (AP)--The romantical- ly-minded may get a thrill out of movie love scenes, but all Linda Darnell gets is a yawn. "It's a bore, really," she said. "How can there be any thrill when there are 50 people watching you go into the clinch?" . Linda has been pitching movie woo for nearly half her life. She says it's' no fun. "You can't get a thrill when' you're not in love with the person you're playing opposite," she ex- plained. "And I've never been in that condition." Kisses Miss As for the script kisses: "Noth- ing!" 'They are usually negotiated with the actress' lip caked with powder, so the lip good won't come off on the leading man. "Nothing feels worse than having powder on your lips," Linda remarked. Linda has gone in for all varieties of film love-making, but lately has been subjected to the more rugged style. She has recently co-starred with Paul Douglas, Richard Wid- mark and Stephen McNally, who aren't exactly the hand-holding type. "I like the more gentle kind of romance," she sighed. "I bruise easily." New Talent This week Paramount unveiled its "Golden Circle" for hopeful movie stars of the future. It con- tains a dozen youngsters, largely unknown, who might be the Ladds and Lanas of tomorrow.
