The daily bath, with a brisk friction with a brush, helps the skin all over the body to function normally. Four or five glasses a day, taken between meals, will help along the campaign of preserving fine skin texture and retaining youthful' coloring. Many a dry skin is that way because it is thirsty. Our outsides are affected by the _. condition of our insides. If you don't believe that, note your ap- "pearance the morning after the "merry evening when you have not "had your customary hours of sleep, didn't give nature a chance to do *"'her mending and building job. Cold water is a grand temic to use when pores have expanded or '# when tissues are losing tone. If the complexion is inclined to shine, the before-bedtime soapy washing must s+ .pe extra thorough. Some beauti- cians suggest the use of shaving soap because it lathers quickly and . freely. They suggest that the suppli- cants for beauty friction it into the flesh with their fingertips. Be finicky about the soap you use. If your skin feels "rough, it may be because the soap is not bland enough for a sensitive .. skin, While practically all toilet "soaps are high grade these days, one may prove better for your par- ".»-ticular epidermal coat than anoth- § Jer. Don't use soap and Van water ust before going out of doors or Just after coming in. This rule applies especially to the girl who has freckles marching across her nose, If the skin seems rough and chapped, use a cleansing cream or an oil before the face-washing rit- ual and a heavy emollient after- <2» wards, « Ice frictions are used in nearly +- all beauty shops by operators who give facials. Stars are shying away from come ment on controversial matters and are reluctant to lend their names to any causes. They fear such ac- tivities may mean the end of their careers. New Problem A study of Hollywood history shows that political activity by stars is a fairly-recent development, In the early days, a star's per- sonal life was chielded from the public. A Hollywood axiom said stars were not supposed to have babies or opinions. Gloria Swanson was the first to break the jinx against having babies. Her career continued to thrive despite her motherhood. But the prejudice against opinions remained for years. Some stars even refused to vote, for fear their politics might be revealed. New Era The Franklin Roosevelt era ush- ered in the period of political ac- tivity for movie stars. There were several reasons for this develop- ment: 1. The President's Birthday Balls for the March of Dimes brought many stars to Washington. This contact with the personality of FDR. had a profound effect on many playeds, 2. With the increase of income taxes, many Hollywood people be- came payers of huge taxes. Because of this, they felt they should have some say in how the affairs of the U.S. are conducted. 3. The issues "of 'a depression- wracked nation and a strike-torn world affected many stars. They felt the responsibility to give their time, money and names to various causes, 4. Many stars were sincere in their politics, but others partici- pated because it was "the thing to do." Discussing politics because a fad in some circles just the same as Canasta and the Charleston, But whether fad-conscious or serious about politics, most stars are remaining out of controversial issues. Most of them feel they would be endangering their popularity to take a stand on any issue in these times when politics is so explosive. Club Calendar For Next Week MONDAY Pleasant Mon. Aft. Club. Phone. 42 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE GLAMORIZING:- Romatic-Looking Eyelashes : By HELEN FOLLETT § Not every girl can have long, curling eyelashes like Movie Star Elizabeth Taylor but a lot can be accomplished with the proper use of eye make-up. SAYS a beauty specialist: i 7 have discovered in the course of my labors that women want, al- most as much as they want love, romantic looking eyelashes. Fas- cinating things they are, but gen- erally speaking they are gifts from the gods, who are not always open-handed in their distribution of favors." There's no question but that the young lady with 'short, ab- breviated lashes cherishés a yiolent envy toward the girl who has long dark curly ones that form a rav- ishing frame for her eyes, and she usually knows how to use them to advantage when a susceptible male is present. A scant growth can be made more abundant if one is persistent with simple treatments though no presto-change will occur over night. It is a long, long beauty road to travel, but worth the effort. Bathe the Eyes - Night and morning bathe the eyes with warm water. Then dip- ping a washcloth in ice cold water hold it close until the flesh is glowing. The purpose of this is to speed up the blood streams upon which the little fuzzers live. Dry gently, apply mineral oil to the roots of the shafts. Don't wipe the oil away; let it seep in. Eye- lids should look moist; they: should never be powdered. A little light friction now and then with a finger that has been dipped in oil is helpful. Rub light ly from side to side. If lashes fall to any extent it is possible that the lids have taken on tiny scales. The oil will do away with that condition as a rule. Keep a spic and span clean little brush at hand. Close your eyes, use the brush with an up- ward stroke to give the lashes a pretty tilt, Brushing gives the roots gentle exercise. The use of mascara will make the growth seem heavier. A dark brown is a better choice than black, which seems to be the favorite of the average good-looks seeker. The big idea now is to follow the natural trend. Artificial effects are no longer in vogue. And that is just dandy. HOUSEHOLD HINT Fish bowls and aquariums should be cleaned regularly to remove sediment and scum which . gather on the sides. To do this, trans- fer the fish to another bowl of water, then clean bowl and orna- ments with baking soda sprinkled on a.damp cloth. Rinse, fill the tank with clean water, and return your fish to their clean home, ( "SURE WE FOXES ARE SMART! BUNDESEN, M.D, CROUP CROUP can be a very danger- ous disease. Known technically as laryngo-tracheobronchitis, it is an acut infection involving not only the voice-box but also the wind- pipe and the small tubes in the lungs. Since so many of the .| respiratory structures are effected, there is great difficulty in breath- ing, and the threat of the sudden choking off of the breath is always present. For this reason, it is im- portant that it be diagnosed early and treated promptly. Croup seems to occur most often during the winter months, but may develop at any time during the year, It is more common in male children, occurring most frequently in those between the ages of one and three years. In this disorder, there is inflam- mation of the lining membranes of the respiratory track, with the formation of a thick secretion. Ulcers or sores may also develop in the more severe cases. Symptoms usually develop fol- lowing a cold, There is a croupy cough, noisy breathing, and hoarse- ness; also, loss of appetite and, sometimes, vomiting. The child has fever and there is an increase in the number of white cells in the blood. As the illness gets worse, the difficulty in breathing becomes more severe and the child is severely prostrated. The patient should be kept at rest in bed and given fluids by injection under the skin or into a vein. Oxygen should be admin- istered, and the antibiotics given, the type used depending upon the kind of germs producing the trouble. Penicillin or aureomycin is usually satisfactory. The air the youngster breathes must be kept sufficiently moist; in fact, the humidity should be 90 per cent. This humidity should be obtained without using steam, since the steam heats the air. In producing the humidity without heat, compressed air is passed through a system of strainers and filters; then it is forced over a water tank and a fine spray pro- duced. If this treatment fails or the obstruction to the breathing is not relieved, surgery is required. The operation consists of making an opening the trachea or windpipe so that the patient may breathe. However, if the condition is recog- nized promptly and treated with moisture and the antibiotics, this operation is usually unnecessary. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Mrs. E. G.: What causes a dull, aching feeling of the spine?. It bothers me when I sit too long. Answer: This condition may be due to some inflammation of the Joints in the spine, It might also be due to some disturbance of the connective tissues, known as fib- rositis, or to a muscular inflam- mation. An X-ray of the spine should be taken and a thorough physical examination carried out Dear Mrs. Beeckman: My daughter -- "our" daughter-- was secretly married four months ago. Her father and I were divorced several years ago, and we have both remarried. All the circumstances of the divorce were as friendly and dignified as possible, and our daughter, our only child, has lived part of the time with my present husband and me, and part of the time with her father and his pres- ent wife, both of whom are very good and generous to her. She has been living with them while she was going to college very near them; her engagement was an- nounced to a young man we thor- oughly like and approve of; but apparently the confusion about the draft made them decide to have this secret ceremony, She has been living with them to make the announcement jointly, just as we have always tried to make all plans for her welfare jointly, and also to present a "united front" to the world, as concerns our approval of the marriage (even though not the secrecy). (1) Would this be a permissable form, considered more or less 'cor- rect'? (2) What would the exact form be? Could we possibly use "have the honor of announcing the mar- riage," a form I have always pre- ferred to the bare "announce the marriage"? (3) Yesterday they established themselves (with the aid of both families) in a very small apartment. Would it be permissible to enclose "At Home" cards in the announce- ments? If so, the form you would suggest, please? EE 8 1. Today when so often the cir- cumstances are the same as yours or similar to yours, the divorced- and-remarried mother and the di- vorced-and-remarried father of the girl jointly issue the announcement of the marriage. This form does make sense, and gives the best pos- sible background of "unity." I sug- gest that you and your daughter's father follow this new and practical trend, and send these announce- ments, even though they are tardy. 2. Yes; it would be correct to use "have the honor of announcing," the form you prefer. This is the form: WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT: Joint Marriage Announcement ? By MRS. CORNELIUS BEECKMAN : have the honor of announcing the marriage of their daughter Elizabeth to Mr. John Baker Browne Tuesday, the (date of the marriage) Nineteen hundred and fifty-one Haven, Ontario 3. Yes . . . a correct and excel- lent idea. To my taste the best and most practical. form for the "At Home" cards that are enclosed with the announcement have only the name and address engraved on them. No "At Home" words. And these cards, so engraved, have a great variety of uses. The form: Mr. and Mrs. John Baker Browne Two Pleasant Street Haven, Ontario Gift To Reception for Serviceman On Leave? Dear Mrs. Beeckman: The son of a dear friend of mine is in the service, and he is coming home soon on a 24-day furlough. His mother is having a reception for him on a Sunday afternoon while he is at home. Does one have to take a gift to such an occasion? R. No. However, if you wish, it would be thoughtful and generous of you to give (or send) a gift to the serviceman before he departs after his furlough.
