BEAUTY FOR YOU:- Stop Abusing Your Eyes By HELEN No doubt you have heard about | eye exercises, The woman next door tells about how she rolls her eyes this way and that, opens her ds, closes them, does all sorts of ptic highjinks. Pay no. attention. f there is anything wrong with your eyes, see an eye specialist. if he wants you to put them through a course of calesthenics, he will tell you how. Your reporter inter- viewed a medical man who de- plores this practice unless it is done under professional supervision. He says that what eyes need most is rest, They are on the job every waking moment and are likely to suffer from abuse. Under normal conditions, they need no care other than bathing twice a day with warm water, then with cold. They have their own oil- ing and washing systems and car- ry on pretty well--that is, if you treat them as you should, Women who type all day, or sew for hours, or do any kind of work that requires constant use of the eyes, should give them several rest periods. Changing the distance of vision is helpful. The best way to do this is to stand at a window and look far away. Whenever possible, close your lids and give your eyes a chance to rest. You can do that when rid- ing in a public conveyance instead of reading. During those moments when you are waiting for your ap- pointment with the doctor or den- tist you can close your eyes. Consid- ering the way all of us tear around these days, a little relaxation would benefit the nervous system, too. If you have had an extra busy day, the Big Date is on for the evening, and you want to appear at your best, give your eyes a treatment. It will take away the tired look, freshen the surround- ing tissues. - Use warm water, then cold. the lids smart, lave them with a JAMESON Whenever possible, give your eyes a chance to rest, * * simple boric acid solution that you can get from your druggist. WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT:- Form of "Thank-You" Notes? light | By MRS, CORNELIUS BEECKMAN fenthisisstic appreciation of certain features of the gift, the design or color perhaps, its adaptability to your needs, ho.- you plan to use it, Will you please straighten me out on this ever-bothersome question of writing (or nft-writing) thank-you | notes? NEVER TO DO: Never, never send a printed thank-you card to anyone for any gift on any occas- | ion. This is an inexcusably rude and callous thing to do--to be will- ing to send bleak, impersonal words (printed words concocted by a stran- ger) to "thank" a kind friend for a warm-hearted, - generous gesture. Anyone who stoops to sending printed (or even stylishly engrav- ed or nicely-designed) cards of thanks will inevitably find . .. and deserves to find . . . that friends who have taste will stop sending gifts. What joy 'or inspiration is there to send a gift only to receive such a discourteous and unworthy acknowledgement as a ready-made card of thanks? Men Invited To Engagement Parties Dear Mrs. Beeckman: Is it proper to invite men to an engagement party or should only girls be asked? Nancy M. It is proper: to invite men to an engagement party . . . either the | party given to announce the engage- | ment or the party that celebrates | the engagement. OF INTER Hollywood Highlights By BOB THOMAS Hollywood (AP)--Here's an Oscar nominee "who attributes her performance to being pregnant. The mother making this state- ment is Eleanor Parker, one of the five actresses in the running for the top Oscar at tomorrow night's ceremonies. She was expecting her second child while making "Caged", which won her the nomination. Like all award winners, Miss Parker of course thanks the script writer, director, photographer, pro- ducer, make-up man and press agent, but she dlso hints that be- ing with child helped her role, "I think having a child is close- ly akin to the work of an actress," she explained. "Both are creative functions. Having a child is the most wonderful thing that can hap- pen; it gives you a great thrill to know that you are giving life to another person. That creativeness is bound to show in your work. "Also, I am one of those lucky women who feel perfectly wonder- ful when they're pregnant. After the first couple of weeks, I feel healthier than ever. Maybe it's all the vitamins and pills I get to build me up. "Anyway, I really threw myself into the role in 'Caged.' I was drop- ping off eight-foot walls and run- ning down halls and doing all sorts of stunts." Miss Parker and her husband, producer Bert Friedlob, now have two girls. Miss Parker doesn't hold much hope for her chances in the annu- al Oscar derby at the Pantages Theatre tomorrow night, "I'll be there," she assured, "but 1 don't expect to go home with an oscar." "Follow the Sun" should please movie fans in general and golfers in particular. It's the story of Ben Hogan, the links ace who made a miraculous recovery and comeback after a crushing auto accident, The | climax of the story is obvious and |it is well developed. The other | elements of the drama are not too defined, but the film doesn't dwell too long on them. As a sports story, it ranks among the better efforts. Add His Name To Title Dear Mrs, Beeckman: My oldest brother, who is a doc- tor, says that when you speak to a doctor (dentist, too) it is courteous --really "necessary," he says -- to add his name after the title of "Doctor." In other words, he says that a courteous person doesn't ad- dress a doctor just as "Doctor," but always with the name, "Doctor Da- vis." I've always thought it was all right to say just "Doctor." Clara B. You are wrong . . . and your doc- tor-brother is absqlutely right. When you address a doctor or dentist, you should always add his name to his title'. . . "Doctor Davis." You wouldn't address Mr. Davis as "Mr." would you? Don't Talk About Your Troubles. .. No Charm In This Are you always looking for an ear into which you can pour your trbu- bles? Ever think how boring your troubles and your telling of them must be to other people? Do you ever realize that other people have troubles too .. . many serious trou- bles that may make yours seem like ridiculous bits of fluff . .. but that these people have too much taste, too much self-control, too much self-respect, to talk about their troubles? 1S THIS MISS DAFFODIL? A -------------- EST TO WOM TH GLAMORIZING:- Choosing the Right Lipstick By HELEN FOLLETT Perfect choice for wear with spring clothes is this lipstick in a bright pink And it features something unusual: a mint flavor. shade. LJ PROWLING around cosmetic marts your good-looks reporter made a discovery. It has to do with the colors of lipsticks. There are orange reds, clear reds, pink reds, fuchsias and orchids, brown reds, blue reds and deep blue reds. Would you believe it? There is no reason why pretty lips should all look alike which seems to be pretty much the case, "The tone of the complexion and the color of the eyes determine what color the lipstick should be," offered an attendant at a cosmetic bar. "It is fatal for a girl with a sallow skin to use a blue-red lip smear. It will actually create a greenish cast to her skin. She needs an orange red or even a brown red. Bright Red "The bright red is definitely out because it is too vivid a contrast to the complexion. The eyes are the most attractive and interesting fea- ture and when the lips are too prominent the eyes run second. Make-up is going natural in a big way, and that's just dandy. No wo- man should look lithographic be- cause it gives her a brittle appear- ance. Instead of making her look younger, as she hopes, it makes her look years older. "The manner of application is important. One should trace a bor- der line around the lips, then cd in, It is surprising how careles some women are when playing wih | the make-up box. Synthetic blushes | and lipsticks rightly used, give the | face more character, make it more | interesting. And you should tell your readers that enough is often too much. Delicate make-up makes the beautiful skin lovelier. "Shoppers do not give sufficient though when selecting the items that enhance their complexion." HOUSEHOLD HINT Why not buy your towels in sets with different bright colors, and assign a certain color to each member of the family? Individuals may choose their own colors. BUNDESEN, M.D. ACTH TREATMENT IT may well be that a certain kinship exists between the 1iheu- matic disorders and those due to allergy or sensitivity. Such a rela- tionship is indicated by the fact that bodily changes which take place in patients suffering from al- lergic diseases are similar to those occurring in arthritis and rheumatic fever. These considerations have recently led to trial of the new hor- mone, ACTH, sb successful in the treatment of some forths of arth- ritis, and of asthma, and other con- ditions due to over-sensitivity. A group of 23 patients with asthma, five with reactions to peni- cillin and two with eye and skin sensitivity, were studied: The pa- tients with asthma were all suffer- ing from a severe, clironic form of the disease which had failed to re- spond to the usual methods of treatment. It was noted that with the first course of treatment all of the signs and symptoms of the asthma clear- ed up in 15 of 19 patients, who usually began to notice some im- provement within a few lours af- ter the treatment was given. How- | ever, in one patient certain symp- toms persisted for about ten davs. As the patients improved, the usual drugs employed to bring re- | lief from asthmatic symptoms were gradually stopped. As improvement continued, the amount of ACTH given was also gradually reduced. The injections were given into a muscle four times a day at six- hour intervals. The relief from the asthmatic symptoms lasted for varying per- fods. In some patients, it was only | In one patient, re- | for three days. lief continued for almost nine months, It would also seem that there is a relationship between the amount of the preparation given and the duration of relief. Those that should be shunned for their wicked ways are veils that stand out starchily like a bee catche er's mask 'and partially cover a face to leave the rest of it woefully lack- ing in sheathed allure.
