i" Sugar Baron WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21, 1951 frHE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE NINETEEN King Is Now Colonel of Camerons Winnipeg--(CP)--The King fin- ally has become colonel-in-chief of Winnipeg's Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. For many years officers and men of the regiment were proud in the . bellef His Majesty was their colonel. But in 1949, they dis- covered otherwise, In that year Maj.-Gen. Sir James Drew, colonel of all Cam- erons, visited Winnipeg. Lt.-Col. D. J. Gillespie, commanding the Winnipeg Camerons, asked him for an autographed picture of the King in his uniform as colonel-in- chief. The general told him the King was not colonel-in-chief of the Canadian regiment. But he sug- gested the Canadians could peti- tion the governor-general to ask the King to assume the title. © Col. Gillespie lost no time, He forwarded the petition early in 1950. i Early this month His Majesty's scceptance came through. It coin- cided with the anniversary of the founding of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada by Lt-Col. R. M. Thomson in 1910. "A wonderful birthday present and a boost to the pride of the regiment," said Col. Gillespie. "Ours is the only regiment the King has adopted in Canada since 1939." The Camerons originally were raised In Scotland in 1793 as the 70th regiment of foot. When Queen Victoria became the 'regi- ment's first colonel-in-chief in 1873, she granted it the title of "Queen's Own." : The parent regiment saw action at Alexandria in 1801, Salamanca in 1812, Balaklava in 1854, Khar- toum in 1898 and Johannesburg in 1900. The Canadian outfit saw its first action at Kimmel Hill in 1916. In the Second World War it fought at Dieppe and in the European cam- paign. Hits Rations In Britain London -- (CP) -- Lord Lyle of Westbourne, president of the power- ful Tate and Lyle sugar empire, has told the people of Britain there is no justification for further rationing of sugar. In his presidential address at the annual meeting of the company, Lord Lyle declared sufficient sup- plies were available from Common- wealth and * domestic growers to meet normal demands. Rationing, he said, could be abolished immedi- * ately without expenditure of dol- lars. He suggested that the Govern- ment was continuing sugar ration- ing to hide the rising cost of living, The price to the housewife for her weekly ration of 10 ounces per head, came to five pence (about seven cents) a pound, against seven pence to the manufacturer. If the price were raised to the housewife the cost-of-living index would rise. while' a reduction to the manufacturer would entail an in- crease in the subsidy, borne by the taxpayer. : On Horns of Dilemma "The planners are on the horns of a dilemma," Lord Lyle said. "Their easy way out is to do noth- ing -- sugar is to remain on the ration." Reviewing the company's opera- tions, he reported a turnover for the year of £84,000,000, representing [CROSSWORD - - =~ By Eugene Sheffer HORIZONTAL 45. wide passage 1. precaution in a building 5. ecclesiastical ¢7. Exports at 670,000 tons had been a record for the company. This vol- ume, about 200,000 tons higher than the preceding year, involved trade with 55 separate countries, at a value of £29,000,000. Referring to a proposal to na- tionalize the British Sugar Corpora tion, which controls sugar beet op- erations, Lord Lyle said: "I cannot see what good this step is going to do anybody. But if it comes about, we shall not fear competition with a state-owned section of our indus- try so long as the competition is fair and above-board." New Zealanders Out To Destroy Rabbit Menace By J. C. GRAHAM Canadian Press Correspondent , Auckland, N.Z.,, -- (CP) -- New Zealand is fighting a large-scale war on rabbits which it is hoped will result in a permanent increase in meat exports. If the rabbits could be eliminated it is estimated that several million more lambs and sheep could be exported an- nually. The rabbit population fs estimat- ed at more than 50,000,000, In terms of sheep carrying capacity this re- presents an annual loss to the country of about $11,000,000. In some years more than 20,000,000 rabbits have been destroyed, but they continue to thrive. A major problem has been that when prices were favorable, rabbit- ers--and some farmers on badly-in- fested properties--have tended to engage in rabbit farming, deriving STARTS FIRST FILMS OF OUR NEW at-nothing guys behind it! ATR a substantial income from the skins and carcasses and leaving sufficient rabbits to breed for the future. When rabbiters have been paid on the basis of the number killed, the same tendency has been evident. As well as causing great loss in stock-carrying = capacity, rabbits have also seriously damaged veget- ation, causing grave erosion in some areas, This loss is perhaps the most serious of all, as the damage is in some cases irreparable and progressive. New Approach A government-appointed rabbit detruction council to direct the at- tack on the pest on a national ba- sis, is now approaching the prob- lem on a new basis. It is trying "killer" methods, aim- ed at wiping out the rabbits in their warrens without worrying about recovering the carcasses, This would result in a loss of_re- venue from exports of skins "and carcasses, but the council is con- vinced . that a far greater gain would result from increased mut- ton and lamb exports. It is testing methods of killing by large-scale spreading of poisons and fumigating of warrens, and also of paying workers on a differ- ent basis from the number of car- casses produced. Incentive schemes include extra payments for good work in ridding areas completely of the pest, and for work in difficult country, The new policy will require larger direct payments from farm- ers to finance the work, and also by the general taxpayer in govern- ment subsidies.
