Important New Discovery On Cancer Found By ALTON L. BLAKESLEE New York, March 13--(AP)--Can- cer in a woman's body has led to discovery of a common new blood type and a startling finding about cancer, a leading blood expert said last night. It was found because the woman's blood wouldn"t mix with blood from anyone else, except her sister. Her blood destroyed other bloods. The reason was traced to cancer. It apparently was making a chemical it isn't supposed to make. It is the first link ever reported between cancer and blood types, which determine the safety of blood transfusions. It may help explain one origin of cancer. The report was made by Dr. Philip Levine, diector of the RH Blood Testing Laboratory of Ortho Re- search Foundation, Raritan, N.J., at a meeting on blood types in the New York Academy of Science. The new blood type was named the Jarrell factor, after . e 66-year-old woman who had a stomacn cancer. Dr. Levine said the cancer cells contained the chemical for Jarrell- type blood, and gave rise to antibod- ies against it in her own blood. This was shown by tests after the cancer was removed, without giving her blood transfusions. Finding this chemical in cancer cells may help explain how cancers start. Cancer cells are ordinary cells gone wild. Their heredity changes so they no longer live, work and die like ordinary skin, muscle or nerve cells, and they don't do useful work. The new finding is eviderice that cancer cells, when they und rgo this change, can take on jobs never sus- pected before, Maybe, Dr. Levine said, the hereditary change that started the cancer also gave the cancer cells the ability to make the blood-type chemical. Whether cancers do this often isn't yet known. JOHNSON Canadian Press Staff Writer London, March 17 -- (CP)--That Thing called the census hits Britain Jon a resounding boom come April On that day more than 60,000 specially-trained enumerators start their tour of some 16,000,000 house- holds to complete the United King- dom's first national stock-taking since 1931. To prepare the public for the or- deal of filling out a question form a8 long as your arm, the office of the registrar general has issued an explanatory booklet outlining the purpose of the survey with an ap- peal for fair play towards the enu- merators. As a starter, the booklet lays the blame for this census business on Canada's . doorstep. The first ap- proach #0 a complete census of the modern type, it says, was first taken in Quebec in 1665. It was not until 1801 a similar census was introduced in Britain, after violent opposition to the bill making it law. Was Denounced At that time, however, enumera- tors in other lands were still being used for purposes of tax assessment. Others feared the census figures would be used abroad to probe Bri- tain's military position and some denounced it on grounds of impiety and presumption, predicting « It would be followed by epidemics and disasters. Since then a census has been taken at regular 10-year intervals " except for the blitz year of 1945. The pamphlet seeks to assure mil- lions to be grilled next month they have nothing to fear from the 1951 survey. Confidential Information It will have no connection what- ever with assessing individuals for taxation, won't pursue them for ine surance contributions nor compel them to perform any other social or national obligation. 4 personal details derived from the returns, it adds, "are treated by all engaged in taking the in plet absolut confidence and used for statistical purposes only '-- never in any cir- cumstances to the detriment of the individual." Confined to Facts Questions on .the official form have been confined to matters of fact. Inquiries about such personal things .as income or r#ht are ex- cluded as are questions having any bearing on physical or menta] in- 4 firmities. A few queries are specifically di- rected to married women under 50. On this point the booklet remarks: "It may be that in some cases there will arise some embarrassment in answering such question; there do exist odd skeletons in cupboards. That is why the strictest watch is kept to ensure there is no leakage of census information." Heads of households are preclud- ed by law from making improper use of any information given them. If, for instance, Mrs. Smith, who has boarded with the Joneses, and has always passed as.a widow, dis- closes she is in fact a divorcee, Jones is liable to prosecution if he mentions the matter over the half ating condition now an: (2) A sensitive receiver incorporating up-to-date improved circuits.
