THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE i, PAGE FIFTEEN PORT SNAPSHOTS By Gzo. H. Campsrrs INA Waterloo Hurricanes visit the Oshawa Generals tonight and this the big and glorious chance the locals have been awaiting. Hockey who like to see lots of goals, should take in this one here tonight. Jankowski and "Fats" Delvecchio will be going all-out to boost scoring total by & big margin. This pair now stand an excellent .0f finishing one-two in the O.H.A. scoring race and they can clinch that chance if they "turn on the heat" tonight. Water- 0 took a 12-2 trouncing last night at St. Catharines, will be a am and the Generals should have it all their own way. The ht will-put Oshawa up within one point of St. Catharines again the Generals their big chance to finish in 5th place. * * * In the games last night, Windsor Spitfires got a real scare their own ice and they had to come up with a spirited display nose out Galt Black Hawks only 3-2. In the gdme at Guelph, THI Biltmores put on a two-goal rally late in the piece Toronto Marlies 5-4. This all means that Barrie has place -- and they did it while playing an exhibition game with the Boston Bruins. That, incidentally, was the real moving the game with Oshawa Generals ahead from last to last Monday. The game at Barrie this Monday is a regular scheduled fixture -- being booked for that date ever since the start of the season. Teepees win last night gives them a total of 53 and Oshawa has 50. Windsor and Marlies are now tied for second place -- and Guelph is only one point back -- but both Marlies and Guelph each have another game -- which they should win -- and that will have them finishing the schedule in this order -- Barrie, Mariboros, Guelph, Windsor -- then likely Oshawa, followed by St. Catharines. Oh yes -- the O.H.A, tagged a 4-game suspension on Marlies' Ronnie Hurst last night. +> * * BRIGHT BITS -- "Babe" Pratt struck a referee out in the: Pacific Coast League and was suspended for three games and fined $300.00. New York, March 10--(AP) -- Rugged Rex Layne has set his sights on either Heavyweight Cham- pion Ezzard Charles or undefeated gets, don't sell him short. The so-called "smart guys" sold hinr short last night, and they're still paying off as the result of Layne's sensational technical knock- out victory over Belting Bob Sat- terfield in 2.56 of the eighth round of a Medison Square Garden 10- rounder. Undefeated in a year and ranked fourth in the National Boxing As- sociation rankings, Layne, at 190%, was made the 9-to-5 underdog against the 180%-pound Chicago negro, rated one of the hardest hit- ters in the ring today. He sampled some of Bob's Block- busting rights, went down for eight in the first round, and then came back to wreck Satterfield with a barragge of his own right-hand wallops, After a pulsating seventh round, in which both fighters were rocked by terrific blows, Layne laid out his rival with a crackling right, and down on his back went Satterfield for nine, When he climbed groggily to his feet, Layne smashed him to the ropes with a left and right to the head and Bob was helpless. Referee Mark Conn immediately stopped the fight. The slim crowd of 5961 (gross gate $19,647) gave Layne a roaring ovation, unlike the chilly reception he received after beating Cesar Bri- on in a lacklustre bout here Feb. 9. ; "Now we want either les or Marciano," said Man Marv J : ¥ enson. "I'll fight anybody," said Layne. If he wants, Layne has a willing opponent in Joe Louis, former heavyweight champion. "Since Layne also beat Joe Wal- cott and since Ezzard Charles will be out of action two months, I'll meet Layne anywhere," Louis said. Jenson will confer with Interna- tional Boxing Club officials today on a future opponent. Layne is def- initely big-time now for sure. His upset victory over old Jersey Joe looks even bigger now since Wal- cott's strong showing against Charles. Rocky Marciano. Linderman, Andy Mowat and Hugh Morrison, all but Capt, Linderman being from this city, Syd Arnold, Former Oshawa Boy, Starring With Paisley Pirates, Hits Old Country Headlines Sports Editor's Note:-- Syd Arnold of Oshawa, son of Mr. and Mrs, 8. R. Arnold, 213 Bloor Street West, hit the" sport limelight in "The Sunday Mall", week-end edition of The Daily Mail, well-known London, England news- paper, some weeks ago and the in- formation having arrived here, we pass it along for interested read- eds. Syd is starring with the Paisley Pirates, top ranking team in the British Ice Hockey League. The story appears below: HE'S A SENSATION! They've Got Syd Well Taped "When Ah'm feenished wi' ye, yell cairry enough tape tae tie up the Queen Mary tae Southampton dock!" grinned Jock Robertson, trainer to the league-toppers, Pais- ly Pirates. He and ice-hockey's fly- ing torpedo, Syd Arnold, had drop- ped in at request, I knew Syd had been playing under difficulties but the fans would never have dreamed it by his sen- sational play. On Xmas Day, he got a shoulder injury at Dunfermline. Later it was diagnosed as torn ligaments--and he's been defying all advice by turning out trussed up like a tur- key. ' y ediately he hits the ice he starts to truss-up the opposing de- fenders. He has scored more tetch- nicolour goals than any other ice- man I've seen. "How 'bout your phenomenal speed, Syd--did it just grow on you?" Said Syd: "I guess I grew fast through running back so much to check. My father used to watch me play 'for Whitby back home and told me no wingman was worth a cent if he wasn't an expert back- checker. If I lazed around on the ice I was scared to go home after- wards!" Anyhow, it's generally con- ceded that Arnold is now the fastest thing in Scotland on ice-hockey skates. I saw him streak to his own goal to poke the puck away from an attacker, wheel round, grab his balance, steak away past everyone to the other end and crack the puck into the other goall And if you imagine that's a push- over you still believe in Santa Claus. Syd came over to Pirates in Septem- ber, 1948, was married to a Paisley girl in August, 49 and aims to stay put here for a year or two. In between hockey games you can find him chasing after the speedway tracks at White City, Ashfield and Motherwell. But his wife has talk- ed him out of taking it up properly as a summer sport, There's never been a more popu- lar boy in Paisley's Canadian hockey --which isn't bad for a fellow who |, was born in Wales, left for Canada when only séven months, and has long since been a naturalized Can- uck. At twenty-two Syd Arnold looks like scaring the daylight outa a few defences for many years to come, WINDSOR RALLY NIPS JR. Toronto St. Michael's Monarchs, a collection of old pappy guys who could talk your ear off with ac- counts of their puck-chasing activi- ties everywhere from California to Nova-Scotia, forged ahead in the three-team scramble to decide the Ontario Hockey Association Majoe Group finalists last night when they defeated the nearly-as-experienced Hamilton Tigers 3-1. Art Childs, probably older than the most venerable Monarch, had to be at the top of his unorthodox game to keep Monarch-driven rub- ber from penetrating his net with monotonous regularity. In the major game, Pat Wilson, Matt Mesich and Playing-coach Johnny O'Flaherty were the Mon- arch scorers while Frank Liscombe tallied for Hamilton.
