It throws her completely out of beauty form. At the reflection in the mirror she could burst into tears--and fre- uently does. i are two forms of this trouble, the fleeting rosiness that comes from contact with cold breezes, and the chronic condition. The last, of course, should have the attention of a physician who specializes in diseases of the skin and scalp. An infection may be brewing; such troubles should be caught early. Dr. Charlotte C. West, in her in- teresting book, "Ageless Youth, says that the flaming 'mose may indicate a state of the blood, due to anemia, chronic stomach or liver disorders and a host of things that may have their beginnings in dietic errors. "The blood and its circulation are, therefore, always faulty in the case of a red nose," she continues, "and this is a subject of superla- tive importance to seekers of beau- ty and health." The nose that is properly pale indoors, but performs like a stop light as soon as it is taken out in the open, need cause no alarm. The girl who is thus troubled is usually suffering from nervous tension, has cold feet, and cold, moist hands. She should make an effort to slow up activities, get the kink out of her nervous system Here It Is! 4701 3-- la flilon Yes! Here is a dress that uses contrast and still is most slender- izing! A cerise nose enrages her. * & & by using mental hygiene, and make every possible effort to keep the blood streams travelling nor- mally. A salt glow every morning is recommended. Moisten a bowlful of ordinary table salt. Stand in the bathtub and friction the salt into the skin all over the body. The flesh will become warm before the treatment is finished, show- ing that circulation has speeded up. Outdoor exercise is important, By pumping fresh air into your lungs you will get a sense of warmth and well-being. Local treatment that will give resistance to a thin, sensitive skin surface consists of applications at bedtime of ointment of zinc oxide. This unguent has healing qualities and is more or less antiseptic. No need to rub it in. In fact, this type of complexion will rebel against rough treatment. Be gentle with the washcloth and the powder pad. In the morning, remove the oint- ment with tepid water, dry the flesh gently and lave with a saturated solution of boric acid. Dissolve one scant teaspoonful of powdered boric acid in a cup of hot water, let cool, and apply with pledgets of cotton, The Experts Say By KAY REX Canadian Press Staff Writer Ottawa--(CP) -- If mother can get junior to the dentist without a whimper, she can pass up this column, . If she has trained her child to look on a glass of milk with the same favor that he looks on a bottle of pop, she must have a model child. But these mothers are probably ./in the minority, The Federal Health Department apparently thinks so, or it would not have pub- lished "Ten Little People and "Their Teeth." This picture booklet of 10 pages is calculated to catch the small fry unawares, inoculating them with a bit of good teeth propaganda be- fore they know what has happened to them. Page one is is the picture of 10 two-year-olds playing ring-around- a-rosie. Page two informs the reader that five of the children are "wise"-- they drink milk "because it is good for their teeth." The five others are "foolish"-- they drink pop " use they do not know it is bad for their teeth." As the story moves along we see the five "wise" children dutifully polishing their teeth after every meal, The five you-knqow-what children are "too lazy" to brush their teeth. Finally the five foolish ones end up with bad teeth "with lots of holes." However, everybody lives tooth- happily ever after with the five British Buyers Favor Squirrel, Fur Prices Rise By MURIAL NARRAWAY Canadian Press Staff Writer London -- (CP) -- A No. 1 fur favorite in Britain's home and ex- port markets is Canadian squirrel, and it's.gejting more expensive all the time. ' "As long as demand remains high, prices will keep -on rising," the spokesman said in an inter- view. "The trouble is that output of wild furs cannot be increased to meet demand." A recent spring fashion display, valued at £50,000 ($150,000), showed furs ranging from £20 fox capes to "North American" minks costing from £000 to £2,000. These, of course, are export prices. Styles are mostly full at back with wide sleeves and huge cuffs, Collars are both large and small, but never large enough to conceal the shoulder line. In the more expensive furs, much use is made of the alternate three- achieved by lining the sleeve to the elbow with, fur. The sleeve can then be cuffed to any length from wrist to elbow. Cape-coatees, the double-purpose cape and jacket styles, are still greatly in demand -- specially in silverblu mink. Equally popular are the tiny shoulder capes with stole fronts. Whatever the style, silverblu mink is a top- favorite. "Last year, our sales in silverblu equalled the total sales of all other mink," said the spokesman, Furs ranged from Russian and Chinese ermine through Alaskan seal, Peschaniki, Persian lamb, Chinese and Persian broadtail, natural fitch, fox and mink-dyed kolinsky, to shorn racoon, a fur favored by Princess Elizabeth, For evening wear, there is a three-quarter. white ermine cape, & three-quarter white fox cape and a hip-length coatee of white mink. Fur designs include copies of those shown in Paris by Pierre Balmain. These include a dyed ermine stole ending in four oyster shells that converge to form a sleeve, . Another Balmain creation is an evening stole worked in single strands of natural mink set on pleated grey taffeta. This opens out in a wide scalloped fan-shape and drapes from shoulder to hip. The most extravagant design is a three - quarter - length natural mink coat with huge barrel sleeves and dropped shoulder-line. The sleeves are worked horizontally, while the whole of the coat, in- cluding the shoulder-line, is worked vertically, HELPFUL HOME Vancouver (CP), -- During 1950 the Vancouver Sailors' Home. gave direct assistance to 692 needy sea- men, provided 1,732 days' care for 188 convalescent cases and wel- comed more than 16,000 visitors, The home was built in 1907 when Bue were only two deep-sea docks ere, Kind to a Budget GLAMORIZING:- Powder Pointers to Follow By HELEN FOLLETT Choose powder by texture as well ag color, says Screen Star Janis Carter. Light powders belong on a fine-textured skin; heavier powder on a dry skin. IT is a toss-up as to which make- up item is No. 1, the powder pad or the lipstick. No woman who is on good terms with the ever-pres- ent lady in the looking glass could possibly get along without both of them. Considerably tall thinking goes on when it cames to deciding between colors for lip tinting, but powder seems to be a matter of "eenie-meanie-minje-mo, I'll take that!" Few membPers of the uni- versal association of beauty quest- ers seem to have any idea as to skin tints--anyhow, that is what a chatty beautician has just told your reporter. The effect to strive for in pow- der colors is one that makes your face appear as if you were not wearing powder at all. The cos- metic industry has so many ex- perts working out blends that the average woman can easily find a shade that matches her complexion exactly, not only matches but glamorizes. The consistency of powder is important. There are light pow- ders, medium and heavy. The first type is the happy choice for a fine- textured skin or one that has start- ed to succumb to the ravages of time, The arid epidermis calls for a heavy powder with a creamy base; it is the only kind that will stay by one for any length of time and it really soothes a rough sur- face. ' The blonde dolly has the fixed idea that she should use a delicate flesh tint. Sometimes that will serve. More often a blonde's skin is more golden than pink, on which even a rich cream-colored powder is more effective, gives her com- plexion more character. * The sallow skin is a tough problem. Strange though it may appear, a deep rachelle with a little green added will tone down the sallow appearnce. Brunettes have little difficulty. There are many different shades of rachelle -- or brunetfe-powder. The darker the skin, the darker the cosmetic calcimine, of course. After applying with the lamb's wool pad, tap the flesh lightly with the finger tips, Fashion Flashes COMING IN for Spring is patent, for both shoes and bags. A hand- some' bag is an envelope of black patent that gains color interest by all-over perforations over white or red kid, creating a polka dot effect. * + » STILL WITH US, and in very geod versions for Spring, is the useful, reversible coat. - A graceful pyramid line marks a full-length coat of ottoman faille, which can be reversed to a non-sagging wool Jersey side. Nice in navy blue with lilac-pink jersey, or brown and pink. Can be worn with tuxedo revers or as a collarless wrap. * + » TWO-TONE suits are coming in again. A handsome tailored suit has a jacket of rose, lilac and misty blue striped wool worsted, and a plain misty blue skirt. The jacket pockets are triangular and dip down on the skirt on either side to add an interesting bit of color to the plain fabric, . * + » EXCITING use has been made of silks in various weaves and weights for "Spring ensembles. Heavy silk shantung, in navy, makes a smart coat, cut full and flared, There are huge turn-back cuffs and slanting pockets with rippling flaps.. Big collar ties in loose, self ends, and the coat fis lined in scarlet taffeta. The slim dress, of the navy blue shantung, has a wrap-around skirt, ob B CATCH THE RABBIT for its silky fur, which the trade snootily calls "lapin." Anyway, lapin is coming back, mostly for nice little jackets and such for Spring--and all smartly worked and made. 3 FAMOUS WASHDAY SERVICES ! A Physician | Advises You By HERMAN M. BUNDESEN, M.D. PERIODIC DISTURBANCES _ FOR many women, the days just before the periods are marked by a nervous tension which shows itself particularly in mental depression and a general tendency to the "jitters." It is a condition scarcely to be ondered at when one realizes that its cause lies in an imbalance of certain glandular secretions. Though temporary, this imbalance makes for a profound upset of body chemistry as long as it lasts. Starches and Sugars During this time there is a lack of the secretion known as proges- terone, and an gxcess of one called estrogen, whicl results in a dis- bance of the body's use of starches and sugars, as well as causing fluids to be retained in the body. The former produces a lowering of "the amount of sugar in the blood with such symptoms as weakness, fatigue, and emotion- al upsets, which are reflected in crying spells, restlessness, depres- sion of spirits, and sleeplessness. Fluid retention in shown by swell- ing of the breasts and organs in the. lower part of the abdomen or pelvis. The face and the legs may also show a certain amount of puffiness, The abdomen is distended, and there may be pain in the lower part of the abdomen, Less often, there are headaches, sickness at the stomach, and vomiting. In about three out of five cases there is an abnormal craving for sweets, and trembling may occur, which is relieved by taking food.. These symptoms may begin from ten days to two weeks before the regular period. Twice a Week The treatment suggested to overe come the difficulty is the giving of injections of a substance known as gonadotropin twice a week for the two-week period before the regular period is expected. The last dose is injected not later than three or four days before the expected pe- riod. While this treatment is carried out, the patient may also find relief by taking drugs which stimulate the action of the kidneys, drugs which relax muscle spasm, and by using a diet low in salt and high in protein foods, such as meat, milk, and eggs. It may be advis- able for the patient to eat four or five times a day. Thyroid extract may be helpful when given in small amounts. It has also been sug- gested that large quantities of vitamin B-complex may be helpful in this condition. Hollywood Highlights By BOB THOMAS Hollywood (AP) -- Newspaper ° readers were shocked recently whew .** the estate of the late Jack Holt was announced. Despite a diss tinguished film career dating back: to 1913, he left only $5,000, mostly (in personal belongings. ' Onetime matinee idol Maurice R Costello died with an estate too small to be probated--$91.55. Jean Harlow left $41,000, a meagre amount considering she had been a top star for a decade and was earning $4,000 a week at her death, Many another star has died leav- ing the heirs only a stack of press clippings and unpaid bills. How does this happen? There are three main reasons: . 1. Stars don't make as much money as most people think. 'A lot of the established stars can draw fabulous salaries, but many, of the newcomers do not. Even stars who make big sa 5 have difficulty keeping any of ft. Taxes can take three-quarters or cent to their agent and often five per cent more to a press agent, and more, They have to pay 10 per there are dozens of other drains on their earnings. 2. Stars have to live like stars. There is no rule to this effect, but. all of them live up to the standard expected of 'them. Ee 3. Stars sometimes make bad ine: vestments. The acting profession * is not noted for its stability. Ofte; stars can make poor decisions whichs can erase whatever savings they™ may have accumulated. By that time, their popularity may have faded and their earning power van- ished.
