BEAUTY FOR YOU:- Arms And The Woman By HELEN JAMESON Any woman, even though she is not a social butterfly, takes pleas- ure in possessing beautifully rounded shoulders and arms of . graceful proportions. These are de- pendent very largely upon normal musculature, which must be dis- tinguished from fat. Muscles, of course, are something to which women give never a thought, and that's too bad. Graceful movement depends upon muscle flexibility and muscles determine the lines of the silhouette. ire To be attractive, the arms should not only be shapely, but they should be white--the skin smooth, of fine texture, They get no cosmetic at- tention at all. It is marvelous how appearance may be improved by the free use of creams now and then. Gooseflesh can be blotted out by that means. . A hand and arms treatment that is given in beanty shops can be given at home at small expense. The first step is a warm scrubbing with soap and water and a brush of heavy bristles to bring a glow to the flesh. Then cocoabutter is ap- plied generously. Start at the fingertips, massag- ing the cuticle around the nails. Thumb the knuckles; if you are no longer a Young Thing, knuckles can look older than anything. Form a bracelet of fingers and thumb, clasp the arm and work up and down and sidewise, forcing the co- coabutter into the flesh. Pay special attention to your el- bows. The skin is often coarse on these arm hinges, may be grey be- _ cause of friction of sleeves. Out hands are ever before our eyes, but elbows we seldom see. Do up-and-down strokes all around the upper arm. Massage your shoulders. Thumb the back of your hands, using more and more of the emollient. Fill a large tin salt shaker with almond meal, Sprinkle generously over the arms, patting it in to Brinbuted By King Features Symdnate. This hand and 'arm treatment can be given at home. * +» * form a pack with the cocoabutter. So far so good. The next step is to wring large Turkish towels out of water as hot as you can bear, wrapping them around the arms. Repeat half a dozen times until the skin is steaming hot. Use the towels to remove the pack. It is a pity that women do not put a higher valuation on massage. It increases the number of red, cor- puscles in the blood, acts favorably upon all the fibers, tends to keep the arms youthful. As massage is normalizing, it is equally effective on fat arms and skinny ones. Winnipeg Pianist Accorded Ovation At Albert Hall London, (CP) -- Ross Pratt, Win- nipeg-born concert pianist, scored a resounding personal triumph when he appeared as soloist with the Londc Symphony Orchestra. Playing before a capacity crowd of 6,000 in Albert Hall, the Cana- dian was accorded a rousing ova- tion for his stirring rendition of Tchaikovsky's Concerta in B flat minor. He was recalled four times _by his enthusiastic listeners. Even members of the orchestra joined in applauding the Winnipegger's fine technique and polished performance. It was Pratt's first appearance as soloist in Albert Hall, where many of the world's leading artists have scored their greatest triumphs. The Canadian ' pianist, however, is no newcomer to London. He completed his musical studies at the Royal Academy of Music, made his debut at historic Wigmore Hall and last year gave the first performance in England of the Richard Arnell Con- certo with the Royal Philharmonic ' Orchestra. Pratt at present is on the staff of London's Royal Academy of Music. He plans to leave for Canada Newest Crochet These doilies are daisies -- all needleworkers love them! BUNDESEN, M.D. DISEASE OF LUNGS ATTENTION has recently been disease which mystifies by its mild- called to a rather strange lung ness. From the nature of the changes it brings about in .the lung tissue, which are somewhat similar to those of tuberculosis, one would expect the health of patients to be severely damaged, but this is not the case. as a pneu- But it is a pneumonia "| with a difference in that it is not caused by germs or viruses as is ordinarily the case, but by fungi known as coccidioides. In most cases this type of pneumonia is difficult to distinguish from those caused by germs, since it causes such similar symptoms. In some cases, however, they may be very mild, ' Real Surprise The real surprise, however, comes in its after-effects. In y cases it leaves decided cavities or no- dules in the lungs, togethér with much scar tissue and calcium de- posits; but, notwithstanding this widespread damage, patients are for the most part practically with- out symptoms. Unlike tuberculosis, the lung con- dition does not spread after the acute attack has subsided. Fur- thermore, there is little likelihood of contagion, that is, spread of the disorder from the infected person to others. Though there are cavities in the lung, and loss of weight in some instances, removal of lung tissue does not seem advisable. In fact, hardly any treatment at all is ne- cessary, unless there is some type of lung hemorrhage. It is important, however, that the condition of coccidioidomycosis be recognized when it occurs, and that the course of the condition be followed repeated X-ray ex- aminations of the lungs. Resembles Tuberculosis Since . the' disorder resembles tuberculosis so closely, we are for- tunate in having a test which makes the diagnosis sure. This is a skin test, made by injecting into the skin a substance known as coccidioidin, and noting whether redness of the skin occurs at the point of injection. The condition is by no means as rare as was formerly supposed, a large number of such infections having oceurred among veterans of World War II who were sta- tioned in desert spots where they came in contact with dust contain- ing the coccidioides fungi. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS B. L.: What would cause a lot of pain im the left shoulder? Answer: Pain in the shoulder may be due to a variety of dis- turbances, such as inflammation of the muscles, nervés or joints; to some circulatory disorder; to a dis- turbance in the spine, or to some disorder affecting the nervous sys- tem in general. So watch your posture and give your back the cosmetic care it needs--scrubbing well at bath time; PTT on p \ TAKE a backward look. More than one woman, standing before a full-length triple mirror, as she tries on a coat, is aware that her back is not all that it should be. These days, when the bodice of a formal is considerably abbreviated a neat back means a lot. It has been said by somebody that one is as old as one's spinal column. The erect one suggests youth and vitality. A bulge of the shoulders records birthdays and the figure has lost its fine lines. Beauty of Outline The body is like any piece of architecture, depending upon the foundation column for its beauty of outline. The positions assumed when walking, standing or sitting tend to improve or injure the back- bone. With good posture and a strong, healthy musculature almost any woman can have an attractive figure. When the back is well, de- veloped, the bony cage, which con- stitutes the framework of the chest, is also normal. A high chest usually means that the breasts are firm and rounded. An exercise that helps to keep the torso in shape is this one: stand with the feet five inches apart. Hands on the hips. Inhale after d L J as you send the body forward, bending at the hips. The upper half of your body should be at right an- gles to the lower half. Count five, then slowly inhale as you rise your- self back to first position. Rest a moment, inhale, send your body backward from the walst as far as ever you can. Business Hours The career girl who sits all day and the one who stands through business hours will find this sim- ple exercise of benefit. There should be a regular time for figure m:iding -- ten minutes before or after the bath in the morning, ten minutes at night. Muscular activity spurs circulation and brisk circula- tion will do away with fatigue bugs. Women weep about fine figures changing into "shapes" but, alas; few women seem willing to take the time and trouble to ward off silhouette defects. As far as cosmetic care is con- cerned, give your back a good scrub- bing with a long-handled brush when you're in the tub, After dry- ing briskly with a towel, pat on fragrant bath powder. And when you don a low-cut gown, be sure your make-up doesn't show a line of demarcation at the neck. It should be gradually tapered off. 4 eggs 1 ths. grated onion' 13 cup grated sharp cheese Trim crusts from bread and cut in one-half inch cubes. He now conducts a writers' workshop at the University of Kentucky and is considered one of the top authorities on the west- ern scene. He is here to write his first screen play, "Shane," and I interrupted his labors to ask if he thought mov- ie westerns were authentic. "No," he replied, "It seems to me the movie west- ern and western fiction have fallen into the same pattern of using the old cliches time and time again. For instance, there is the familiar character of the ranch foreman who is trying to put something over on the boss. And the boss usually turns out to be a beautiful girl. Historical figures have taken a beating in the movies, Guthrie add- ed. He pointed out that Billy the Kid was a trigger-happy little punk who neither looked nor acted like Johnny Mack Brown, Robert Tay- lor, Jack Beutel or Audie Murphy. (All have played the character on the screen.) "And the western sheriffs are made to seem like great men," he added. "But from their records, you $80 only gather that they liked to 'All in all, it does seem that the movies concentrate too much on the violence of the west," the auth- or observed. "Surely, there was some gunplay, but there was also a lot of hard work. There were plenty of men who helped settle the west without firing a shot. I would like to see the stories of those men shown for a change." CORNELIUS BEECKMAN Dear Mrs. Beeckman: In about two months I am to be given a bridal shower by my brides- maids. As I have many relatives and would like to send some sort of card that announces my shower. My bridesmaids want to send shower- invitation cards, but I feel this would be telling these out-of-town relatives and friends of mine to send gifts even though I know they cannot be here at the shower. Can you suggest to me some way of "announcing" my shower with- out sending shower - invitation cards? Reader I wouldn't know how you can possibly "announce" that you are to be given a shower without inviting the ones to whom you are sending the announcements. Your brides- maids have the right idea . .. they should either send shower-invita- tion cards to all who are or may be concerned with the news that a shower is to be given for you, or should send ho cards. It's certainly true, however, that sending shower- invitations to out-of-town relatives and friends does give the unattrac- tive impression that you have in mind to bid for as many shower gifts as possible. However, even this would not seem so "forced" as send- ing them some unusual dnd bizarre form of announcement-that-a-show- er-is-to-be-given, Don't you really feel "as if this is telling them to send the gifts even though you know they cannot be there at the shower?" Choosing Silver For a Ten-Year-Old ! Girl Dear Mrs. Beeckman: 1s it proper to give a ten-year-old girl a place setting of sterling sil- ver? The mother of this young girl +{ | says that it is the right time to start her off on her silver. Jane. I'm not sure that I would say that this is a wise thin: to do. "Tis said that the two things that every girl wants to choose for herself are (1) her husband, and (2) her silver! And as to this question of choosing- her-silver, it would take a very brave, indeed psychic, person to de- termine whether a girl so young would prefer . . . and most impor~ tant, continue to prefer .. . a tra- ditional pattern or a modern pate tern, a simple or an elaborate de- sign, a pattern of high formality or a pattern of perhaps extreme fem- ininity, a rhythmic grace of flow= ing lines. I've known many girls to change their enthusiasms about a silver pattern many times during their teenage years, or even be- tween the time of the engagement and the wedding. And many girls scorn the wonderful family silver they inherit, silver of some fine, noble traditional pattern, and in- stead choose a streamlined modern pattern of silver "to have and to hold." As to this very young lady of ten . .. how could one know? Teach the children to keep their rubbers and galoshes clean by washing mud and slush off with warm soapsuds.
