Suitability of Flue-cured Tobacco Types Ottawa--Black rootrot resistant flue-curéd tobacco varieties are be- coming important in Ontario for producing uniform, high yieldiing tobacco of good quality. The time has come when most tobacco grow- ers cannot afford to gamble on va- rieties susceptible to black rootrot unless at least a three-year rota- tion is practised, says L. S. Vickery, Officer-in-Charge, Dominion imental Substation, Delhi, Ontario. Black has caused consid- erable damage to the yield and quality of flue-cured tobacco with- in the past few years, particularly when grown on the heavier soils in wet, cold seasons. This disease in- duces stunting in the early stages of growth, producing crops that are' irregular, late in maturity, inferior in quality and low in yield. @everal million pounds of leaf annually have been lost in Canada because of the susceptibility of some varie- ties to this disease. Such varieties as White Mammoth, Yellow Mam- moth, Bonanza, Gold Dollar and Duquesne are susceptible to black rootrot and should only be grown on soils known to be free of the disease or in a three-year rotation with rye. Some growers consider that these varieties have themselves changed within the last decade. This, however, is untrue, because their purity has been maintained by careful selection of seed. plants grown from original stock seed and entrusted to registered seed grow- ers. The so-called change has been their failure to respond favourably in black rootrot infested soils. The regular two-year rotation of rye and tobacco is too short under most conditions to expect good results from a susceptible variety. Resistant varieties grow uhiform- ly and rapidly under most adverse weather conditions, but without careful management they may ul- timately reduce the productivity of the soil. Soil organic matter must be maintained at an optimum lev- el if continuous high yields are ex- pected. Soils high in organic mat- ter conserve moisture under drought conditions and help prevent leech- ing of the fertilizer during heavy rainfalls, Heavy crops of rye-straw should be turned under at maturity and fertilized with nitrogen and potash to maintain or increase soil 'productivity. Delcrest is a flue-cured tobacco variety fairly resistant to black rootrot and has now been grown with success for three years in the district. This variety produces de- sirable quality and yields on light to medium soils and does well on heavier soils providing the nitro- gen content in the soil is kept quite low. ,Heavier soils retain nitrogen available to plants much longer in the season and tend to produce rank, late maturity tobacco. IRIDESCENT COTTON SUITING 'The iridescent cotton suiting, which is to be a novelty in the big textiles display at this year's Brit- ish Industries Fair in May, is ex- pected to be a success with the North American male, always more experimental than his British counterpart, Another innovation on show will be the new ladder-proof nylon stockings in which each stitch is separately knotted. 12:00 NOON CKLB-News; Midday Melodies CKEY-News; Pick the Hits; Listen Ladies CFRB-Deris Veale Show WGR-Wendy Warren and the News WBEN-News CBL-CBC News and Commentary CJBC-June Dennis 12:18 P.M, CFRB-Farm and Home News WGR-Aunt Jenny WBEN-Old Saddlebags CBL-Aunt Lucy GJBC-Riders of the Purple Sage 12:30 P.M.
