Canada's exports of certified seed potatoes have increased from a few bushels since the industry wag started in 1915 to a record high of 7.6 million bushels shipped from the 1948 crop to 15 countries throughout the world. The United States alone absorbed 87 percent of the total seed exports. Comparing seed potato produc- tion in Canada and the United States, Mr. Scannell said that cer- tifying officials south of the bor- der have reported that the Katah- din variety, showing a total pro- duction of about 16% million bus hels, represented nearly one-third of all the certified seed potatoes produced in the United States dur- ing 1850. In Canada this same variety made up about 42 percent of the total seed produced in 1950, the acreage building up from a single acre in 1934 to 24'2 thousand acres last 'year, For many years varieties like Green Mountain and Irish Cobbler have occupied the top production spots in the Canadian certified seed potato industry. Varietal trends in the Unit- ed States also indicate declining production for the Green Moun- tain variety, and also for the Chip- pewa, Sebago, and Triumph, with increasing producting indicated for Russet Burbank and White Rose. Increased demand on the export market for Netted Gem (similar in appearance and quality to Russet Burbank). and White Rose has meant that these varieties are now seen in the potato fields of New Brunswick asi well as in Western Canada where they have been pop- ular for some years. Particularly in British Columbia has the export demand for White Rose influenced seed production trends over the last decade. This variety officials point out, has proved particularly well adapted for the hot soil con- ditions experienced in South Amer- ica and California and many B.Cs seed growers contract to meet this demand when trade conditions are favorable, Everyone's Going to VALENTINE FROLIC Tomorrow Night (Wed., Feb. 14th) in the GOLD ROOM of the Hotel Spruce Villa * DANCING FROM 9 pm. to 1 am.
