Seniors Surprise P.C.V.S. in Thrilling Basketball Tussle Bowing in Last Seconds 43-41 Junior Players Play Dominant Role for Two Senior Clubs -- Suther- land and Northcott Lead Point Scorers -- P.C.V.S. Meet Central in Play-off Next Fri- day By WINSE BRADLEY The Ocavite Seniors came mighty, mighty close to about the upset of the year in local basket- ball circles last night when they battled the great Peterboro Seniors right down to the wire before losing out to them 43-41 in the last min- ute of play on a basket by Al ortheott. Ne win for Peterboro ties them with Central for league honors so those two teams will settle it in Trinity College Port Hope next Priday night at eight o'clock. Thrilling Climax ; The action in the final stages of the contest was literally "red-hot" as the lead changed hands several times and with the fans screaming themselves hoarse it all added to the excitement. Get Xany Lead The slam-bang kids from O.C.V.I. really started off on the right foot by jumping into a surprising 9-1 lead on two baskets by Sutherland, . one by Dewhirst and a free throw by Wilson, After testing the rims with several shots the Petes found themselves and inspired to their best ability by the amazing Al Northcott they roared back and tied it and then went ahead 17-16. However, Ron Wilson did the same thing to the Ocavites and they fought back and went ahead and when the horn sounded ending the first half the scoreboard read 28-25 for OC.V.I.! Petes Slump Irked by the fans in the third quarter, Norcott suddenly lost his shooting eye and was summoned to the bench. It was at this time that the Oshawans enjoyed their best shooting spree of the night. But then things roughened and sudden- ly Dewhirst and Wilson of Oshawa found themselves out of the game with five fouls apiece, Right after this, Northcott re- turned to the game after having cooled his heels on the bench and once again started to put 'em in with amazing accuracy. He was 'matched point for point by Keith Sutherland and "Beast" Meredith and the first thing one knew there was only two minutes left in the game with the Petes leading 39-37. Sutherland tied it up with a long one from outside the keyhole which cleaved the cords without touching the rim. Then Stewart for Peter- boro sank a similar shot to make it 41-39. But the Ocavites fought back and Rob Harris netted one to knot the eount again, The play then shifted into the Oshawa zone with 40 seconds re- maining, Young took a shot but missed. The rebound was grabbed off by Northcott who dribbled away from the basket and threw a beau- tiful fading hook shot that went in to end it right there, 43-41. For the Petes, Northcott was their Jone star but Stewart and Young also contributed heavily to the win. P.C.V.S. SENIORS o~ocoMANO AR sl onmsunanal} oonvowoR Refer¢es: R. Bantam basketballers carried the Red, Green and Gold to its only win in the tripleheader played here last night against Peterborough Collegiate. : The locals copped a spirited 23-20 victory afer leading for the greater rt of the game. Patan it was a case of the better passing and dribble-driving power of 'the Ocavite club coming to the fore. This time it worked amd they scored time and again. In the first half, Hamilton and Nichol led the Ocavite's and Boor- man topped the losers around the bucket. Came the last half and the locals widened their 11-9 lead to three points through the fine work of Barry Burgess and Palmer Knight who let go some terrific shots. P. C. V. S. pickel up a lot of free throws in this last half and with their great accuracy in this department managed to ride on an even keel. Had it not been for the rough play of the Oshawans how- ever, the Petes would likely have been able to let go some of their deadly set shots. . .and that wouldn't have read well in the final accounting. P. 'C. V. 8. attempted six. free throws in that last period and clicked on five. Really an amazing total for such a young team. Throughout the game, their total was 10 on which they scored six which is a pro average. Oshawa were very poor in this very same particular of the game. During the first half, they had but one shot and scored it. In the last, they had 12 tries and con- nected on but two. The game was nothing as far as Cossa play was concerned, for P. C, V. 8. still have won the title, However their hold on same is now a somewhat hollow one. 0.C.V. L BANTAM: ilson McBachern, Dean and Total Points, 23. P. C. V. 8. V. 8. walked to a 24-14 win at the O. C. V. I. gym last night. The game was the sandwich session in a tripleheader basketball feature. Poor shooting, mere than any other factor, was to blame for the local defeat. Players who ordinarily are high point men, were held to few if any points. Slow Dewn Game In solving the P. C. V. S. zone defence, the Ocavite club tried a set "house" system of play to begin with. . .and this naturally had little if any effect but to keep the score low, By half time the count was a very low 9-4 for the visitors. Climbing out of this scoring lethargy, the locals tried a down- the-side and guard-around attack that soon made mince-meat of the enemy zone. However when they were in close, the locals shooting left much to be desired. In control of the play and in matter of field attempts, the Oca- vite's far outstri) the Petes. In fact to one not watching the score- board, it was a distinct surprise to learn that the Garnet and Grey were winning. . handily. The only points scored for O.C.V.I. in the first half were a pair of field goals by John Graham, Stuart matched this for the visitors and OCAVITE BEES | RAPID ROBERTS REVIEW COP CAGE WIN OVER COBOURG By WINSE BRADLEY The Ocavite Junior Bees finished out the season with a bang last night as they handled the hitherto unbeaten team of Cobourg a con- vincing 30-19 setback right in Cobourg. After a slow start this season in which they dropped their first four games, the Bees found themselves last week and led by Bob Burr with 14 points they downed Port Hope by a 31-21 score. It was a similar story last night in Cobourg only this time their big gun was Lindsay Drummond who also notched 14 counters. His best shot was running one hand jump shot from just inside the keyhole and he tallied four of these while picking up one under the basket and four foul-shots be- sides. : Stu Seymour of the Bees also en- joyed a good night picking up two field goals and two free throws for six points. The Ocavites, according to their old jinx which started with. their first game . and plagued them throughout the schedule, started slowly and went down 7-0 before they knew it. However Drummond and Bun tied it up on three suc- cessive baskets. The Ocavites were never again headed. At the end of the first quarter the teams were locked in a 8-8 deadlock. . At half time it was almost the same. .the score being 14-14. They followed the same pattern in the third quarter they followed the same pattern and at the end it was 20-18. In the final quarter the Ocavites really went to town outscoring the opposition 10-1 and keeping posses- sion of the ball most of the time. The Cobourg team was short- handed during the final quarter due to the loss of two key men on fouls but that takes nothing away from the good Oravite Bees and if they had started earlier in the season would have copped the league title easily. 0. Stuart and Fowler canned two more apiece in the way of field goals and picked up three and two foul shots respectively. Graf- stein plunked one field goal in the last half and that made the Petes total of 24. This was the last game of the schedule for the Petes and leaves them as Lakeshore Cosss champs with the undefeated season. 0. C. V. L. Junior basket- ball club. He played that position last night and then was asked to stay dressed in his uniform and act as a sub in the OC.V.I. Seniors tussle with Peterborough. He didn't act as a sub very long, being placed on the floor as first string left guard. It was then that relaxation played its big role. Keith had just finished a gruelling game for the Ocavite Juniors and al- though he wasn't tired, he was loose. His looseness stood out vividly against the background of nine other very tense players (five for PCVS. and four for O.0V.I. In the opening. min- utes of the game, Keith roamed in on the enemy basket and coolly sent his long one-handed push shots swishing through the net with swift precision. Before the Petes knew what was happening they were down by a 5-0 count, 'That fagt alone seemed to sit on their shoulders all night till the last minute of play . . . when they eked out a 43-41 win, It also kept the Ocavite club on their toes and gave them the confidence they needed to give the Petes a great run-for-their- money. Speaking of runs-for-money, the Oshawa Irish Juniors are playing Queen's. University Juniors in the Eastern Ontario finals (first game of a two- game, home-and-home, total- points series) at Queen's gym tonight. The game is the first half of a doubleheader. Second game sees the £onior Gaels tangle with Western Mustangs. Vv This Monday night at the Arena, the Oshawa Junior Bees play Belleville Rockets in the last regularly scheduled Oshawa game of the Central "B" Hockey The locals have two games left in the schedule, The other of the pair is set for Lindsay on the 14th of the month, League standings at the pres- ent time show Oshawa rather solidly planted in fourth place. Lindsay and Peterborough are tied for the top with 27 apiece, the latter club having played one more game than Lindsay. Belleville are in "third" place with 26 points, just one off the pace of thé front-running pair. Oshawa have 20 points for fourth spot. Port Hope bring up the rear with eight. Now for a bit of theorizing on the outcome of the race. Lind- say at present look like good bets for first place, especially with a game in hand over Petes. Belleville could end up second and play Oshawa in the play- offs, but Peterborough are also in a good position to end up in this spot. So right now it looks like a close battle for the top three places with Lindsay getting our nod. Belleville and Petes candi- dates far second and third place. The present scoring race is a runaway for Fred Etcher of the Bees who has scored 17 goals and made 26 assists for a total of 43 points. He has two games left to break that 50 point mark and it seems likely he'll do same. In second place is Bob Wyatt of Peterborough with 34 points. He's closely followed by Camp- bell of Port Hope with 33, and West of Petes with 32, The only other Oshawa man in the top ten is Ted DeGray with 22 points. Central "Y" captured the Toronto Junior "A" basketball title with a 44-40 victory over Northern Fuels to take the final series three games to one. The win leaves just three teams in this half of Ontario in the play- offs, Central "Y", Oshawa Irish and Queen's U.
