N a | 7"N 'Breeding National Poultry Program Based On Science Canada's flourishing poultry in- i 'dustry now totals about 62 million birds, with a 1949 farm value of poultry and eggs estimated at about $230 million. A pioneer in the field of a National Poultry Breeding Program which has been studied by various countries, Canada has built up an efficient industry since the Record of Per- formance Policy was put into operation in the fall of 1919. 1+ The science of genetics (study of inheritance) has played a large {part in making the poultry in- } dustry what it is in Canada today, + according to A. D. Davey, who ] supervises the work of the National ¢ Poultry Breeding Program in the Department of Agriculture's Poul-. i] ! "try Froduction Service at Ottawa. { Mr, Davey paid tribute to the vision 1 and leadership given to the indus- try by W. A. Brown (recently | 'retired from the Department), and + the enthusiastic co-operation given i him by the producers from coast to ; coast. He said that Mr. Brown's { outstanding service had played an + important part in getting the in- ; dustry started on the. scientific ' Jhasis upon which it is operated to- ay. i No other domestic animal can benefit from genetics as can poul- try, Mr. Davey stated. In the same way, no other farm animal can benefit so quickly from these rapid improvements on a widespread scale as poultry. The application of genetics to poultry farming in A commercial way is of compara- tively recent origin, but already Canadian poultry breeders have recognized the possibilities of sys- tematic application of the progeny test to their breeding programs. The general adoption of this tech- nique of breeding is the foundation of Canada's National Breeding Program, Mr. Davey pointed out. It has made possible on a national scale the establishing of inherited characteristics considered necessary for efficient production. Effective Legislation for R.O.P. No program of improvements is effective without the necessary leg- islation to put it into practice. In the case of the National Poultry Breeding Program, the Livestock and Livestock Products Act sup- plies the required authority to implement the program which con- sists of three policies, the Record of Performance, Flock Approval and Hatchery Approval, each play- ing a definite part in the program. Foundation poultry breeding stock is producéd by the R.O.P. breeders which is multiplied under the Flock Approval Policy and the Hatchery Approval Policy serves as the merchandising and the distri- bution agency to the poultry in- dustry across Canada. The Canadian Record of Perfor- mance policy is considered by poultrymen to be the most pro- gressive improvements plan applied to domestic ani; nd represents the scientific sfruct: upon which the whole National Poultry Breed- ing Program is based. It is founded on a program drawn up by prac- tical poultry producers, scientists trained in poultry breeding, admin- istrative officers and is supervised by a trained geneticist attached to the Poultry Production Service of the Department of Agriculture at Ottawa. When first started in 1919, the R.OP. policy took into account breed characteristics and egg pro- duction only, Since that time, however, a series of progressive changes have been made in keep- ing with the advancements of the science of genetics and the poultry industry in Canada. As a result the pedigree program today is based on the progeny of family test and takes into consideration in addition to egg production, egg. size and livability and other economic fac- tors as hatchability, rate of feath- ering, rate of growth and meat type. Canada has applied the.prin- ciples of scientific breeding to the poultry industry and the industry as a whole has benefited. SPRING COLLECTIONS The spring collectior of the leading London wholesale dress- makers hava n watched with) interest by the fashion experts. Oc- casionally, as many as 30 manufac- turers have collaborated to show| nearly 100 styles, as in the case of | the May Fair Parades held recent- ly. Outstanding among the coats and suits there were the pastel checks, notably pink and grey and yellow and grey, tempered, of course, by that spring perennial, navy. From a style angle, the wide choice among suit types was specially pro- nounced. Fhey ranged from the im- maculately tailored black town suits to boxy jacket styles, three- quarter length tunic jacket ensem- bles and novelty check jackets with plain skirts. It seems obvious from thes. examples that ensembles will be important next spring, with trimly tailored suits worn with boxy swaggers (many with tuxedo revers and optional belts) and fit- ted redingot types. UILICADS Give Best Results The introduction .of artificial methods of incubation is consid- ered by officials to be one of the important steps in the forward march of the poultry industry in Canada. Annual chick production over the past few years has varied from 60 to 90 million chicks, with about 80 per cent of these being from approved hatcheries that operate under the National Poultry Breeding Program; the estimated value of chicks and poults has ranged from $16 million to $24 million. Unlike some other types of farm products, chicks are not sold on the basis of eye appeal. It is the breeding behind them that counts claim the experts, and most poul- trymen will continue to purchase chicks from a proven source when they can do so. Progressive poultry producers soon discover that cer- tain poultry breeders' chicks are money makers because they have .| years of selection behind them for egg production, egg weight, growth, meat production, livability, free- dom from disease and other de- sirable qualities. These are the chicks from the R.O.P. breeders' flocks, which, in the opinion of A. D.
