. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1951 ZN THE DAILY TI MES-GAZETTE | TIPS FOR TEENS: Learn How To Shop Wisely : Build 13 Schools In Isolated Areas AY Prince Albert, Sask.--(CP)--Edu- cation prospers in scattered and isolated settlements of Saskatche- wan's northland. Children of Metis, Miners, Trap- pers anf Government men get the same Standard of education as children in southern parts of the province, The Department of Education has built 13 new schools in the last five years. Beauval, Buffalo Narrows, Candle Lake, Cumberland House, Denare Beach, Lac La Loche, Lac La Ronge, Montreal Lake North End, Pemican Portage, Green Lake, Sandy Bay, Snake Bay and Stony Rapids boast new schools. Older ones are still operating at | Chitek | Sturgeon | Isle La Crosse, Goldfields, Lake, Pelican Narrows, Landing and Camsell Portage. T. H. Waugh, superintendent of Schools for the far north, says three new schools will probably take the place of old ones in 1951, Children are taught by compe- tent teachers, says Mr. Waugh. In addition to their regular stu- dies, they are taught cooking, sew- ing and housekeeping. "Their education is very encour- aging," says Mr. Waugh. "And this March, samples of Metis ac- demic and handicraft work will be You'll have more of that useful green stuff -- money -- for other things, girls, if you know how to shop wisely for the things you wear. Slips, for example. You prob- ably buy a slip because it's pretty, because it fits or because you can afford it. You buy it to wear to school or to wear with a date dress. But will it wear well? How can you tell? Here are some slip- tips to check when you shop: Your slip fits correctly if: 1. It's large enough to fit smoothly at the bust and hipline, 2. It has a mold- ed bustline or a curved midriff. 3. It's in your usual 'teen, junior or misses' size range. If you're in the early 'teens, one of the teen sizes 10 to 16 will probably be best for you. If you're in the middle or late 'teens and an average height or less junior sizes may be your best bet. If you're taller than average or large boned, perhaps misses' sizes include the one that is bést for you. Maybe you never thought about the way your slips are made, but we're told they give better wear if seams are double-sewn and pinked inside or clean-finished like a "baby" French seam. Shoulder-straps should be ad- justable for growing-girls and for normal adjustment. They should be attached firmly to both the trim and the body of the slip with a zig-zag stitch, Laces and em- broideries should also be attached with a zig-zag stitch for strength and clean, neat appearance, (For a free leaflet "Your Ward- robe of Slips," giving more helpful facts about fit, fabrics, trims and workmanship of the slips you wear, send a stamped, self-addressed en- velope to Elinor Willlams at this paper.) The Experts Say Ottawa--(CP) .--There may be a grain of truth in that old saw about wn apple a day keeping the doctor wway--at least there is from the ritamin © point of view. Nutrition experts say this vitamin, ascorbic acid, is essential to health and growth, It also is necessary for the normal structure of teeth, And if any members of your family are showing symptoms like rheumatism you'd better start feeding them apples. Such symptoms may be caused "by lack of vitamin C.which is found in apples and other fresh fruit, But don't forget that vitamin "C" is destroyed in cooking, and is most easily destroyed in soda or some other alkaline solution. 'The Canadian Association of Con- sumers describes Canadian apples as not only the cheapest fruit, but one that is in season the year round. The 13,000-member organization also urges housewives to add vitaminized apple juice to their shelves, Not only is this a good idea from the health point of view, but it is also sound economics. The CAC suggests buying apples by grade, and buying in packages. "Buy the largest container you can safely and conveniently store," says the association. When cooking apples add as little flavoring as possible; let the natural flavor of the apples come through. Wherever possible cook apples without peeling. But if you must peel them, drop the apples in cold water to prevent discoloration. In a booklet which the Junior Chamber of Commerce has put out on favorite Canadian recipes, Nova Scotia--the, apple province -- has been represented by Annapolis apple pudding. "Apples have symbolized tempta- tion since the days of Adam and Eve," is the comment at the head of the recipe. "This apple pudding will tempt the most jaded palate." Apple Pudding Ingredients: "Six medium - sized tart apples; three tablespoons gran- ulated sugar; 1% cups sifted bread flour; three teaspoons baking powder; one-half teaspoon salt; one-quarter cup soft shortening; three-quarters cup granulated sugar; one egg (well beaten); three-quarters cup water or milk.
