THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE WHITBY NEWS Whitby Continues a Member Of Industrial Commission Mayor William Elliott senioste. ed Whitby in Toronto on Wednes- day at the annual meeting of the Toronto Industrial Commission. tributing member of the commission for the past three years and will continue its relationships with the commission for at least one more year. : Function of the commission is to locate and develop new industries in its member municipalities and to assist existing local firms to ex- pand plant facilities. Both lines of service showed particularly out-|, standing results in the year 1950. While the report of the commission does not deal specifically with its work in Whitby, nevertheless the general manager Thomas Bartley, working in conjunction with Clerk John R. Frost, has been consistent- ly active in promoting the interests of Whitby. land at Port Whitby has been sold to a large drug firm, British Drug Houses (Canada) Limited and the expectation is that a plant for the manufacture of penicillin and other drug products will be built during thé present year, Mayor Elliott spoke briefly at the meeting outlining all that Whitby has to offer new industries and he said he stands ready to assist the commission in every way. As would be expected, new indus- try has been selecting sites some- what closer to Toronto than is Whithy--in Scarborough and Lea- side for instance. Leaside is now entirely "filled up" with industry. The expectation is that further in- dustrial developments will establish at a greater distance from the city. Figures were quoted to show the great value of industry to a muni- cipality and how in Leaside, it has shouldered a major percentage of the tax burden.. Proof that the Toronto Industrial Commission is a "going concern" is given in figures that the total cap- ital investment by new industries has jumped from $10,000,000 in 1940 to $90,000,000 in 1950. An interesting point arising from the commission's annual report ap- pears to be that most of the sever- al industries which came to Ajax i the past 12 months, have not been credited to the efforts of the commission. A. B, Cooper was elected president of the Toronto Industrial Commis- sion, while C. L. Burton was named honorary president. Frank E. Waterman . was elected honorary vice-president, while E. H Ash- worth, R. C. Berkinshaw and W. H. Bosley were chosen as vice-presi- dents. The other directors named were Mayor H. E. McCallum, E. G. Burton, J. Elliott, Flwood Hughes, J. A. Northey, H. C.
