In winning their playoff honors this section, the Oshawa "Tank- ard" rinks eliminated their only pther challenger from this district, the Cobourg Club. Without artifi- pial ice and having had only a few mes this season, in some cases the players were playing their first curl- of the season, the Cobourg rinks re no match for their Oshawa op- lponents, in either the Tankard or trict Cup play, In the Tankard competition, "Al" parkhill's rink triumphed over Geo, tchell's Cobourg squad and Dr. ohn Brock's local foursome, other half of the Oshawa Tankard entry, defeated Morris Booth of Cobourg a similar score, to give the Osh- wa Club a clean-cut win on total pore, Four Teams in District Cup Four clubs competed for the Dis- frict Cup playoff rights, which will be resumed against the Lindsay- [Peterboro district winners early in [Fel , with the winners of that playoff going to Toronto for the eights" in the final playoffs for Ontario honors. In the first round, F. Hardnen's rink held E, Thorpe's four- ome from Woodville to an 11-11 draw but the other half of the ntry, D. Newman skipping it, gave Woodville a one-sided win over L. Rice of Colborne, to put Woodville the final. In the other bracket of the first ound, Cobourg rinks again bumped into. Oshawa's superiority due to pid-season form with Rev. J. Fine Curling Displayed While some high scores were pro- duced in the 16-end games, actually the day's curling was of surprising- ly high order and some of the ends were skilfully played, with brilliant shots by rival skips deciding the end on most occasions, Following are the complete list of club representatives and their scores in yesterday's play: -- Ontario Tankard Event COBOURG OSHAWA W. No excuses, their outfit were hotter than firecrackers, they had the spirit, the shots and ran the younger club into the ground by the judicious use of their bench strength . . . which was on a par with the men they had on the floor. The Irish Juniors tried a fast-break, but the older crew showed experience by getting back under their backboard quickly and setting up their zone defence. That zone, by the way, was ery effective on the small floor and held the Junior marksmen out and away from the percentage spots and their scoring to a minimum of Jucky long ones. No longer may the Stone Health Club crew be regarded as a cinch. They lost Al Red- doch and Oliff- McColm and should soon be losing Elton Anderson, but they have gain- ed two powerful "big" men in Bruce Coulter and Art Clem- ence . . . both know their stuff and will be mighty valuable on their club come play-off tn» Hot-shots on the attack last night were Bob Fawe, wad Perry and Elton Anderson. The middleman there, Bud Perry gets our weekly floral bouquet as cager of the week. The Oshawa Junior Bees came up with one of their most important wins of the Season, and sre they proud of on top with Lindsay and Petes tied for second. Oshawa is third, one point off second and two points out of first place. Man, are the locals climb- ing fast! Fred Etcher didn't get any points last night, but his five on Monday eve leave him with 35, including 14 goals and 21 assists to better Wyatt of the Petes by some 10 points. He must be hot . . . He is hot and is making a runaway of the e, place on Monday night at the Arena when the Bees go against the other team in sec- ond-place, Lindsay Kinsmen, A win for Oshawa would leave them alone in second and only front-running Belleville Rock- ets, (74 CHECKLETS--Arpad Kovacs, a large and well-preserved par- cel of the wrestling trade, who was once a student at the 0.C.V.I. and a grappler of fame in these parts will be doing his bit in the semi-final event at Buffalo this Friday eve. The mat fans are turning out in large numbers in Bisontown . . . they had 7,000 last week to see the Great Togo. You might catch a view of Arpad or San- dor or what have thou on TV if you are near a set at the time of the fish-night fracas. Branch Rickey says there is no truth in the rumor that he'll buy a controlling interest in the Pittsburgh Pirates, He does admit that he is buying stock in the club, but not as much as would be required for control of the organization. Still that man is a thinking type and perhaps he'd not like to reveal his money moves at the present time . . . thé rumor may have some foundation on act. Bob Rawlyk, the great wing star of the Windsor Spitfires who was injured very early this season has removed the cast from his leg and should be donning skates next week for the long trek back to condition and a chance to wear the colors of his squad. Should he recover the form he had last year , , , though that is asking a lot . .. the Spits would im- mediately become a threat of the first water in the league, Dawn Steckley, star of the Oshawa Skating Club, who per- . formed at the opening of the Port Perry Arena the other evening describes the place as, "really very nice." Other VIP. who were there, figure the Arena as an outstanding achievement for a community of that size, : By Bob Rife FIGHTS LAST NIGHT Detroit--Bob Murphy, San Diego, stopped Henry Brimm, Buffalo, (5) (light heavyweights bug weights un- available). These were the only | two clubs represented in this Im- | portant. event, «| The games started out fairly | even and it looked as if the boys on No. 8 were in for a rare treat | of curling and it turned out just | that way. Dr. Clark was always | ahead of H. Fortyth and by good | steady curling he was up four | coming home, but slipped a little | on the last end and the 'Lindsay skip counted three to finish on the | short end 13-12, [ . On the next ice P. Skitch took | a commanding lead over G. Braund and at one time was lead- ing 9-2. The first part of the game was all Skitch, but the second half was different--the local boys seemed to come to life and by the time the 16th end was reached they were only down three shots. The final end was all Braund's | and he had enough stones on the rings to win the game, but P. Skitch had.the last stone and that meant the game and the series, Skitch made no mistake he took out Braund's stone to count one and win by 14-10. It was a great four hours of exciting 'curling and it was well played. The Lindsay boys now go to Oshawa on Feb- ruary 1 to play against other group winners. Should they . win there, they go to Toronto to play in the finals. Lindsay--C. Moore, W. Lang- don, B., Everson, P, Skitch, skip, 14. S. Howe, J. Beal, L. Mackey, H. Forsyth, skip, 12--26.
