WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1950 {HE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE SEVEN -- -- -- on The Home OF INTEREST TO TRI AR BEAUTY FOR YOU:- Preparing for the Permanent By HELEN, JAMESON This is the season of the year when permanent wave operators work like day laborers. Appoint- ment books are filled to the Smit. The idea is to have the hair shafts relaxed, soft- ened, reconditioned. The perman- ent wave process shrinks the shafts, gives them a coil quality so ring- lets and wave lines are formed. Too frequent waves, with no recondi- tioning, are bound to dry out the tresses. Many women have remark- ed that the first permanent was the best of all, lasted the longest, even though in the old-time meth- ods were not as perfect as they are ow. P The more new growth you have, the longer the wave will endure. The oil treatment given at home is more effective than the one that is bought at the beautery because the lubricant can remain on over night, soak into the scalp, satur- ate the silky threads. The profes- sional application is usually left on during a facial and manicure, then washed away before the shampoo and wave set. Start with a rousing brushing. Have a high grade brush for the purpose, one with bristles that are strong and flexible. Treat a strand at a time, holding the hair away from the head. Brush upward from the nape line, then down from the crown. ; Part the hair at various places and apply hot mineral oil along the partings, using a large medicine dropper for the purpose. WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT:- Seating Arrangements at Banquet? By MRS. CORNELIUS BEECKMAN Dear Mrs. Beeckman: I am on the committee which is planning a large banquet to be given the last of January. There are to be several important guests of honor (all men) at the speakers' table. My suggestion was that only the guests of honor be at this table, that their wives should sit t another table. But several mem- bers of the committee think this would be discourteous. What is the usual procedure in this circume stances? ; Walter L. The procedure must depend on circumstances. For example, if there are only a few men guests of honor and there is space for more guests at the speakers' table, the wives of the guests of honor may be seated at this table, But most often the wives of he guests of honor are Heart Appeal ONE YARD 35-in. for small size! We're not engaged... but very: good friends." Today * let's talk about the answer to this ever- present and ever-important ques- tion arriving from so many girls. First, remember that in choosing a present for your boy friend you'll show you're a smart girl and you'll have more satisfaction and fun in choosing the gift if you think of it as a proof of fine taste and discrim- ination on your part, rather than to put the emphasis on "expensive" (which so many girls do!) A smart girl, when she gives a gift to a boy, splurges on discrim- ination rather than on dollars! What are your boy friend's tastes, his enthusiasms, his hobbies? Mu- sic? Then give him some records of the kind of music you know he enjoys, either classical or popular. Books? Now here, lady, you can show your discrimination, too, and give him one or two, or even sev- eral, books you have reason to be- lieve hell like. Or a subscribtion to a magazine, or to a book*club (making your gift "appear" several times a year, in stead of once). Has he a collector's hobby, perhaps for stamps or coins? You can get him a Commemorative Series of stamps, or one or several rare stamps; or a rare and interesting old coin, or perhaps several. Does he like games? There are excellent game sets, handsome, too, in saddle leather containers. Or per--club-size,. single sheets or double-sheated -- with his initials engraved in heavy letters of dark- gray or dark-blue; or the paper printed with his full name and ad- dress, Or a pen-and-pencil set, or either, stamped with initials or name. Or one or two fine, white linen handkerchiefs 'for evening wear; or service-weight for every- day wear. Or, for his desk, a tra. veling or folding clock or a pu... ui heavy, sporty-looking bhook-ends; or, for his luggage, some item such as a compact dressing-case, plain or fitted; or an item of smoking equipment; or a. muffler -- wool for sport wear, silk for evening wear. ; Service of Bread and Butter On Individual Plates Dear Mrs. Beeckman: When the individual bread-and- butter plates are used, are the square of butter and the roll placed on each plate before the guests are summoned into the dining- room--or are these passed to the guests after they are seated? Marion H. If butter is to be served, the in- dividual portion of butter is placed on each bread-and-butter plate be- fore the guests are seated. Rolls or bread are usually passed after the guests are seated; but, if more convenient for the service of the household, a roll may be put on each plate. ; Consumption of electricity in Australia nearly doubled between 1940 and 1950, LILLIAN MAE MARSH SCHOOL OF DANCING © Ballet? ® Tap ® Toe ® Character ® Barre MASONIC TEMPLE SATURDAY INFORMATION 3048W centerpieces, sometimes, too, there | how about good-looking letter-pa- | Hollywood Highlights By BOB THOMAS Hollywood -- (AP) -- You've seen Robert Barratt dozens of times. He's a character actor who works almost constantly in the movies. It's likely you'll be seeing even more of Barratt in the future. The reason: He bears a remarkable re- semblance to another familiar fig- ure -- Gen. Douglas MacArthur, This week Barratt received word | of his third engagement to portray the general in films, He'll appear in "An Atom of Love," a sequel to "Come to the Stable" in which nuns will do rehabilitation work in Japan. In person he appears amazingly like MacArthur. He has the same build, the same strong features and Roman nose. "We're just about alike," the ac- tor admitted. "We're both about six feet. The only difference bes' tween us is that his voice is a tone higher than mine." So far that hasn't made much differénce, because Barratt's imper- sonations of MacArthur have been silent. The first was in "They Were |' Expendable." . "All I had to do was walk down the dock and get into a P-T boat," he recalled. "For that, I spent five wonderful weeks on location in Florida." His other appearance was.in a | current adventure film with Tyrone Power. He rode in a jeep before cheering Filiphinos after the land- ing at Leyte, "I travelled 17,000 miles to do that scene," he laughed. "All I did was ride 50 yards in a jeep for two minutes. For that I had to go to the Philippines." On that trip, Barratt made a side journey to Tokyo, where he had a 45-minute interview with his noted look-alike. Barratt, 59, was a New York stage actor for 18 years before coming to Hollywood in 1932. He left New York on three hours' notice and has, been here ever since. He has made scores of pictures, but the public will no doubt remember him most for his portrayal of MacAr- thur. BUNDESEN, M.D. ABDOMINAL PAIN CONFRONTED with an acutely ill patient suffering severe ab- dominal pain, the doctor must consider six possibilities in mak- ing his diagnosis -- appendicitis, gallbladder infection, ruptured gastric ulcer, acute inflammation of the pancreas, kidney stone col- ic, and coronary artery disease. ° These are the outstanding con- ditions which cause intense pain in the abdomen and unfortu- nately, their symptoms are more or less similar so that one disor- der is often mistaken for another. For the experienced doctor, how- ever, there are ways of telling them apart, The age and sex of the patient, for instance, will often be factors, since certain of these ailments have a definite predilec~ tion for one sex and one age group. The time of onset of fever and the exact site of the pain will also aid the doctor in distinguishing one type of illness from the other. Generaliied Pain In appendicitis, for instance, the pain is at first generalized but, within 24 hours, it becomes limited to the lower, right side of the abdomen, Loss of appetite, sickness at the stomach, and vomiting may also be present. Though not usual- ly present at first, fever occurs as eral rule, there is an increase in the number of white cells in the blood. Acute gallbladder infection most often occurs in overweight women past 40. These patients often are unable to eat fried or fatty foods, raw apples, cucumbers, or cabbage. The pain usually comes on in at- tacks, and is located in the right, upper part of the abdomen. The pain may pass into the back and up into the right shoulder. Fever is often present. Pulse Rate In ruptured ulcer, there is in- creased pulse rate and rapid breathing, together with fever. Since the rupture of an ulcer al- lows the contents of the bowel to WOMEN ~~ 2, the condition progresses. As a gen-- get into the abdomen, peritonitis 'or inflammation of the lining mem= brane of the bowel cavity develops, Acute pancreatitis usually comes - on suddenly, following the eating of a heavy meal. There is severe and sudden pain in the abdomen, which passes downward into the legs. When the patient sits up the pain is relieved. When he lies down, it is vorse. Vomiting is almost al- ways present. There is some tens abdomen, and the patient usually is in shock with cold and clammy skin, rapid pulse rate, and sube normal temperature, Kidney stone colic also produces severe pain. It starts in the lower area of the back and radiates downward into the legs. Vomiting is frequently present, and there is frequent emptyine of the bladder, Coronary Arteries In coronary artery disease with blocking of the coronary arteries, the pain starts in the chest, in most cases.
