That highly-treas« ured mink coat, worn while shop- ping, will cause the sweat glands to become active. To carry an offen- ve odor is unpardonable, an in- t to the public nose. It is some- thing that should not happen, since it is possible to overcome it. Many a good job has been lost because of it. Many an ardent suitor has departed from his lady-love with a feeling of disgust. Daintiness is a quality that any woman can acquire; without it she cannot hope to make the grade. The first requirement of course is the daily bath, which is not only a health benefit, but is of cosmetic value, as it has a Svea effect upon the complexion. Clean undies, elean stockings every day, and a friction with fragrant talcum after the bath are also necessary if one is to be well-groomed, maintain self- respect. Here is a daintipess test. Answer e questions truthfully. You may be slipping somewhere, and self- surveys are helpful 1% the members of the grand army of beauty-and- eharm seekers, Do you air wool dresses before hanging them in the clothes closet? Do you keep gloves, collars and all other dress accessories clean and spotless? Is your hair shampooed every week or two to remove dead skin scales from the scalp and the deposits of sweat glands that throw off a horrid odor? Are you guilty of that one special hygienic misdemeanor, resorting to perfume when conditions call for a rousing soapy scrubbing of the armpits and the use of an anti- ema No perfume can: kill e odor of perspiration. : Do you use a foot powder? BUNDESEN, M.D. ' MENTAL ADJUSTMENT THERE are several periods of life which doctors refer to as "stormy" because they involve both mental and emotional adjustment to bodily changes that are often beyond the individual's control. One of these is the maturing or adolescent period; another, which particularly affects women, is the menopause or change of life. Though both may, on occasion, cause crises, they are normal pro- cesses and need cause little trouble if handled with care and common sense, The menopause signals the end of reproductive life. The ovaries stop making their secretion and The average age for the meno- pause is about 47 years, but, of course, there is a great deal of variation. It may begin' as early as 35 years, or as late as 55 years, or even later. Number of Symptoms A number of symptoms may oc- cur during this time, such as hot flushes, chills, and sweats. Occa- sionally, there is rapid, noticeable beating of the heart, and high blood pressure. The most common symptom is the hot flushes which occur in about eight out of ten cases, though not more than one out of six women are affected to a degree where their daily routine is interrupted. The flushes are more frequent in hot weather and are made worse by too warm clothing. Exercise and emotional upsets may also cause more frequent attacks. Irregularity in the monthly pe- riods, with excessive flow, may occur during the change of life. Often, these symptoms may also be produced by tumors of the womb. Hence, even though it is thought that the change of life is occurring when these symptoms are present, an immediate exami- ation should be carried out by the physician so that if tumor is pres- ent, it may be discovered and prompt treatment instituted, Certain Fears At the change of life, many women develop certain fears which lead to anxiety and worry. These include the fear of old age, the fear of loss of sexual activity, the fear of getting too fat, and the fears connected with various forms of ill health. In treating the menopause, two things are of special importance: One of the use of gland extracts known as estrogens, which can be given by mou or by injection into a muscle. Of course, these preparations should be used only under the direction of the physi- clan. The second important part of the treatment is what is known as psychotherapy, that is, treat- ment to relieve the mental and emotional disturbances which oc- cur so often at this time of life, QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS H. J.: My young daughter suf- fers from asthma and hay fever. Would a different climate help her? Answer: some persons with hay fever and asthma do better in a warm, dry climate. However, tiff best thing to do is to attempt to determine the substances to which the child is allergic or oversensi- ive, and then to avoid contact with them, or to give injections of grad- ually-increasing amounts of these substances to desensitize the child. Notice the little curl, placed just below the side part. * * MILLIONS of women and girls are shorn lambs, hair cut short as short can be.. Millions of others refused to follow the coiffure trend, have locks flowing free to the shoulders. Of course, the extra long bob is definitely out; an un- tidy arrangement if there ever was one. The length of the hair should definitely depend' upon the length of the neck. Without doubt, there is a proper length for each indivi- dual within the short hair pattern. Any fashion frenzy must be adapt- ed to particular needs. Long Neck ' A girl or woman with a long neck should not have it mared to the same extent as the one with the short, plump neck. The reason is as plain as the nose on your face, beauticlans say. The more that is seen of the long pillar that holds up the head, the longer it will appear to be. The less that is seen of the short fat neck, the shorter and fatter it will look. The one complaint about the short cut is the need of a' frequent perrhanent, Hair grows at the rate' of one inch every two months. The pay is good and the working conditions excellent. The only re- quirement: You have to be less than four feet tall. No use applying this year, be- cause three movie midgets already have signed up. They are Jerry Maren, 30, Billy Curtis, 33, and Tony Boris, 32, Their job consists of playing with toys six to eight hours a day in the street window of a local department store. Asked if they realfly enjoy the work, Maren replied: "You bet, we're having a barrel of fun. ,. "We like the job so much that sometimes it's hard to quit when the day is over. If we're playing to, a big crowd, we sometimes work a little longer. It's just like doing a show: You hate to leave an au- dience, "The only trouble is that we're all getting callouses on our hands and fingers from winding toys. Lebanese Girl Now Enjoys Life Out West Hodgson, Man. --(CP)-- A 16- year-old Lebanese girl who flew 6,400 miles to marry a Hodgson farmer she had never seen, has changed her mind about Canada. Now she likes the place. At first Hasar Ali Tasse was un- happy. On her arrival in October, she says, she thought the country cold, strange and frightening. To make it worse, her fiance got tangled over plane times and wasn't at the airport. Now she is living with her future parents-in-law -- and will be Mrs, Joseph Abas before the end of No- vember. "She's feeling better and smiles a lot now," says Joseph's father, Ala Abas. "I don't think she is lonely any more." Hasar's English is poor yet, but she's using an English name. CORNELIUS BEECKMAN Dear Mrs. Beeckman: (1) My mother and father are to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary next month, and they are holding Open House on that day, from 2 to 5 o'clock. We a planning to serve ice cream molds, bell design; a large wedding anniversary cake (white cake, white iced); small cakes, mainly choco- late; tea and coffee. Do you approve of this menu-plai ? (2) We won't have enough cake forks. Would it be proper to use salad forks as well as these forks? And would it be proper for us to use two or three designs of cups and plates? (3) Is it correct to serve the cup on the plate without the saucer? (4) Instead of having the Guest Book on a table near the entrance- door, as it usually is, would it be proper to have it on a table near the door of the room in which the refreshments are to be served? (5) I am their only child, and I am planning to be one of the "pour- ers," the other pourer to be a dear friend of my parents. Don't you think this would be the best plan? (6) If any gifts are received, should Mother and Dad open them during the party hours, or after- ward? ' ¢ -- BL. (1) Yes, a good basic party-menu. I would suggest, however, that you also serve a cold drink, for example a fruit punch, with which the guests would drink "To the Happi- ness of the Bride and Bridegroom." Also, if you prefer not to add sand- wiches (small, simple ones) I suggest adding some nibbling-items, such as nuts, popcorn, candies, mints. (2) Don't worry at all about com- bining designs. Salad forks are practically the same as cake forks; and of course feel no hesitation about combining them. And, for a large group, gone generally expects to use several designs of cups-and- saucers and plates. (3) This idea of using a cup on a plate without the saucer under the cup could not be considered cor- rect, and I think it is really un- (5) No. I don't at all approve of your being stationed behind the tea- table to pour. You, as the daughter and only child of the hosts, and as co-hostess of the household, should be free to mingle with the guests, and to see that everything is pro- gressing smoothly and successfully. You should ask two women relatives or close friends of your family to preside over the tea-table for each hour of the party .. . this means that they will have some time to themselves to take part in the fes- tivities. (6) Yes, if there is time and opportunity. Guests-bringing-gifts are disappointed when their gifts are not opened at the party to which they bring them; particularly to a party so important as a Gold- en Wedding Anniversary! Your mo- ther, the "bride," opens the pres- ents, with the able assistance of your father, the "bridegroom." oo Bb DECEMBER BIRTHSTONES ... THREE, ALL BLUE. For December there is a choice of three birth stones, ail of them interesting shades of blue, Turquoise , . . Lapis Lazuli . . , and Zircon. A turquoise (which; incidentally, is supposed to bring success in the affairs of the heart!) may bs an Oriental tur- quoise of a beautiful azure blue, and set in gold; or it may be of the American type, more of a greenish blue, and sometimes set in silver, sometimes in gold. Then there is the deep, rich blue of the Lapis La- zuli, full of ancient lore and tradi- tion, and believed to be the "sap- phire" of the ancients. And al- though the Zircon comes in sever- al brilliant colors, the Blue Zircon, in' radiant aquamarine tones, is best known here and most popular. CHRISTMAS CARDS Many artists, some well-known and some new in the art field, have created collections for this year's presentation. of Christmas cards. attractive. But if it serves your con- | venience, it will be acceptable. | (4) I advise you to ask someone who can be depended on to take | charge of the Guest Book, and really | see that everyone signs it . . . this plan is more important than the location of the book. So often at wedding receptions and at anniver- sary parties of the kind you are planning, guests, even when the Guest Book is in a convenient and conspicuous place, are careless about signing.
