(272b) No Composer Can Write Popular Song Says Berlin New York--(AP)--Nobody "writes" popular songs, says Irving Berlin, . The little man who has composed many song hits explained that a popular song is simply one that comes popular; it can't be in- yoniad with any guarantee of suc- ces, "Schubert's 'Serenade' and 'Pag- liacei' are popular music in just the same way as any other song ig strikes a chord in the people," e said. "When it fills a need of the peo- ple, when it strikes that chord, never mind whether it's a commer- cial success. If it fills the need it's popular music and maybe it becomes folk music." Berlin leans forward to tap a forefinger on the desk: "If you could hit on a tune that strikes the same responsive chord in everyone in all the world, there would be no wars. Music is the greatest force that draws people together." Maybe it sounds naive, but there is no doubt of his sin- cerity. He points out how songs like "Easter Parade," "White Christ- mas and "God Bless America" be- came such wide favorites. Alto- gether he has published 800 songs in 43 years. /A "goodly TOBA. age" have become lasting hits. Irving Berlin can observe his tunesmith career and his songs with clinical detachment--"Some of the' songs were smparmuesingly bad." He has "maybe a dozen" he likes best but won't say which they are. Right now Berlin is resting up from the rigors of creating the, music for Broadway's new. success," "Call Me Madam." He thinks it is Ethel Merman's "greatest show," ~--but the music? i "Of course I'm grateful to the: critics who said it is one of my best scores. But no one can tell everything about a score the first time they hear it. I say, let's wait a year and then we'll know wheth- er it is music the people want." Several tunes were pulled out of: the show after rehearsals stated-- in Berlin's pungent phrases they "died like a dog." Another, "It's. a Lovely Day," was deleted from a previous score and used in "Madam" because "it fits here." "You're Just In Love" was creat- ed "under deadline pressure" after: the show was in the works. Berlin is 62 and his first tune "Marie From Sunny Italy" was published in 1907. Plans Big By J. C. The project promises to be a major factor in the country's econ- omy within a few years and should also prove of wide significance to the sterling area. The export sur- plus will not be large enough to upset the huge North American industry, but it may make possible diversion of some supplies to other markets. Tests and trials over many years have produced a plan to develop a sawmill with a capacity of 70,- 000,000 feet of timber a year, a pulp mill with an output of 15,000 tons, and a newsprint plant cap- able of producing 100,000 tons a year. About 10,000 tons of other types of paper would also be pro- duced. All these targets are well within the capacity of the forest. Of this output, about 55,000,000 feet of timber, 10,000 tons of pulp and 66,000 tons of newsprint would be available for export. Most of this would go to Australia, but some might be shipped to other Pacific countries. Build Big Town The plan provides for the build- ing of a town for 10,000 people at" Murupara, centre of the project, the construction of a railway link- ing the area with the main system, and construction of a deepwater port on the east coast of the North Island. Kaingaroa Forest was planted about 25 years ago chiefly with pine native to California and the trees have flourished, growing and maturing much more quickly than in their native habitat. The government is confident that production can begin by 1954 and be expanded considerably in future years. It says exhaustive tests have shown the essential economic soundness of the scheme and that currency revaluation has converted the industry from a marginal pro- fit earner of the order of about six per cent after taxation to over. twice that amount. Lengthy tests, including full- scale production trials with New Zealand timber at a mill in the United States, have shown the suitability of the forest to produce acceptable grades of sulphate pulp, newsprint and various grades of printing and writing p The government will i i respon- sible for the railway, port con- struction and much development work at the project, but it wants to see the sawmill, pulp mill and paper plant operated by private enterprise.
