(N17) Newsprint Association Head Answers U.S. Critic Montreal, Nov. 3--(CP)--Recent price increases by a number of Canadian newsprint companies, which resulted in protests from several United States organiza- tions, have prompted a reply from the Newsprint Association of Can- ada. R. M. Fowler, president of the Association, says in an open letter replying to one from Charles G. Nichols, president of the National Retail Dry Goods Association, New York, that the Newsprint Associa- tion has nothing to do with the sale or pricing of newsprint. These matters are handled by the indi- vidual companies. The letters were released today. Mr, Fowler's letter remarked that Mr. Nichols, in his official capa- city, says in effect: "Please don't raise the price of newsprint because that way in- crease advertising rates and cost us more money, "Inflation is a bad hing . . . we may have to turn to other advert- * ising media and that may some- what reduce the demand for news- print. And, anyway, Canadian newsprint mills are making good profs and should be content with 80 as not to start this pyramid of inflation." A Until the recent price increase announcements, Mr. Fowler said, prices for Canadian newsprint had remained constant since Aug. 1, 1948, which was not "starting" anything. Also, the Canadian newsprint price index had been constantly and steadily below the wholesale commodity price index in the Unifed States. He added: "The costs of making newsprint have increased rapidly in the last two 'years while Canadian news- print prices have remained un- changed. Wages have increased each year . , . pulpwood that now is being cut is likely to cost $3 to $4 more a cord than last year. Many items coming from the Unit- ed States--sulphur, transportation, machinery and coal, to mention only a few--have increased in price. "And I have yet to hear of any Canadian manufacturer presuming to tell the American railroads, coal miners or machinery makers what profits they ought to make. "On the other side of the picture, there is a gpnstantly-rising demand for newsprint . . . In many coun- tries that are 'vitally important to your country and to mine, there is not enough newsprint to meet the minimum essential needs of in- forming the people of world events. ". . . In the present agitation and criticism of price changes, the good record of Canadian produc- tion and the demand for still more production seem to have been forgotten. If more newsprint is needed, there must be more in- the money to make this invest- vestment in newsprint mills, and ment and to support it after it is made must come out of the price of newsprint. "This is a simple fact that is equally important to ' newsprint manufacturers, newspaper publish- ers and advertisers , , ." ' shots. were heard early yesterday cerning and about noon a few lucky hunters were seen carrying home their game. The second day out is no'. as good, with most 0. the pheas- auts being afraid to show their faces. Suriday morning they will no doubt be plentiful again. Pickering Township council at its meeting Wednesday passed a by-law proclaiming Nov. 24th as nomination day. A motion ke, 24 passed to ask the firm of Gorrie and Storrie for an | estimate on making.a water supply survey for the south. end of the township. A by-law was also passed to regulate' the trailer camp and tourist tamps in the township. Council will «sk that Pickering pay only ten per cent of the cost of maintaining the three main roads into Ajax. Hallowe'en Party The Hallowe'en party held by the Rotary club here on Tuesday night was a big success with several hun- dred bags of candy being handed out. Those scarey folk behind the faces were reluctant to give their names when asked, so we cannot 'report who the prize winners were. Damage in this area did not amount to anything and people are very pleased about it. = The odd little stunt was pulled off, but they did no harm. Election Preview Election time is. not tdo far off as the announcement of nomination day will igdicate. It is not known what stand will be taken by those not in power, but people are start- ing to talk election and that is a good sign. Council now holds its elections early in December so that there will be ny snow-blocked roads, and with take an interest. However when nomination day rolls around there are always the same faces present. During the year the council takes a lot of. criticism and still they ask RADI o LOG - Ti £ TABLE _ ET 6:13 P.M.
