Its purposes--to remind Cana- dians old and young of Canada's great naval record in the last war --to pay tribute to those who made the supreme sacrifice and to fea- ture Canada's destiny as a sea power and world trade nation. The Royal Canadian Navy, the Navy League of Canada including its Sea Cadets' and Naval Veterans Associations are joining forecs to accomplish these purposes, | Our Naval Record | In 2060 days of war, under Cana- dian escort, 25343 merchant ships + carried 181 million tons of cargo | from North American ports to the | United Kingdom. Over this bridge | 90,000 tons of war supplies passed | daily to the battlefields of Europe. | Over 90 percent of the men who | manned our fighting ships were | citizen sailors who had joined only | for the duration. Many had never | seen the sea before. ; { Backed by enormous production from Canadian farms, factories | and shipyards our combined naval operation helped win the Battle {of the Atlantic, repeating in his- | tory what Napoleon's Admiral Mahon said of Nelson's ships: | "Those far distant, storm-beaten | ships, upon which the Grand Army never looked, stood between it and | the dominion of the world." From a few ships at the war's j outbreak, by February of 1942, the {ships of the Royal Canadian Navy | formed the main stretch of the | Western Atlantic escort forces. By midsummer of that year, 40 per- cent of escort duty with trade con- voy in the North Atlantic was car- ried out by them. By March of 1943, the actual division of escort duty in the North Atlantic was 50 percent Royal Navy, 48 percent Royal Canadian Navy and two percent United States Navy. "Navy Week," says Lt. Cdr. Wm. Sclater, author of 'Haida', "is to remind us of how a young nation, drawn from every section of this far-flung land, ventured forth on the face of the great waters and wrote, for all the wor.d to see, one of the most glorious chapters in | our history." Highlights of Navy Week Beginning on Monday, October i 2nd, in naval establishments, some {200 Navy League and Sea Cadet | headquarters and veterans organ- | izations, preparations for parades | and special events will get under- | way. i Monday night - a Navy Week | special national broadcast is sched- |uled from 9:30 to 10:00 p.m. East- ern Standard Time over the Do- minjion network of the C.B.C.
