The Raiders hit the field sport- ing their new uniforms and spurr- ed on by them and their confi- dence over the once-humbled (Ghosts, they moved into a vemy arly 5-0 lead. New York, Oct. 2--(AP) Wonder was thinking '| season. Arsenal and Middlesbrough 11-6. It moved to 16-6 and then 19-6 in the last quarter with the [Raiders still well out of the pic- ture. Something was needed to put the spark to the Oshawans who were beginning to chafe under this continual hammering by Ghosts. That something took the form of a' smashing block and fumble récovery by Pete Grice. Art Skidmore socked out a pass Dave West on the next play and fe scooter went over for a major 0 make it 19-11. Grice split the [posts with a terrific convert and and all this with less than five minutes the count was 19-12 , . . remaining in the game. Cobourg werent too worried yet . that one was just a slip, they'd make up for it. Skidmore Interception Seconds later after they received the kick-off, they tried a long pass and Art Skidmore snaked up from his tertiary post, graobed off the oval and darted upfield toward the enemy goal-line. He was dropped some 30 yards short, but tried an onside kick, figuring on a fumble and possible recovery. The. play miscued when his boot went a bit far, crossing the deadline for a single and a score of 1913. Cobourg saw an opportunity here and decided to move along the ground . . no passes thought they. Oshawa didn't need the passes. They stopped the plungers dead and took over on the Ghosts Bust three minutes left to play nd Skidmore reared back and flicked another long pass to Dave 'West. It worked and the top brok- en field runner on the scarlet-clad club romped over the goal-line leaving two would-be tacklers spread eagled behind him. The score was now 19-18. A good conversion would tie the score and with so little time left, the Raiders seemed assured of a split in points. Everything went well to that paint. Skidmore got a fine snap, set the ball in position and with no blockers in sight, Pete Grice lashed out with his toe . the ball spun up and up and then somehow wobbled and spewed off to the left of the posts. Conversion Missed The point-after-touchdown was muffed and Cobourg still had a one-point lead. A kick single was the only course left open for the Raide:s, but they had to get the ball from Cobourg before the 20 seconds left in the ame had run out. A plunge used up time on the first down and didn't stop the clock. Another and no yards gained, but quite a few seconds for the Ghosts, Third down and a long kick to set the Raiders back in their own end so that no boot could reach the goal-line area. The kick was low and a good runback brought it to the midfield stripe. Last play of the game hadn't been called yet so the B signalled for a . Finally seeing West in the clear he let go a partially blocked heave. \ The ball wobbled in the air and was grabbed by a fast-moving Co- bourg defender. Time Runs Out That was it. Time ran out as the Ghost backfielder moved up the field and was tackled on the Osh- awa 45. Cobourg had won 19-18 and from is point it looks like the Raiders ust win all their remaining games Pncluding another with the Gallop- Ghosts on October 14th) to end up in first place when the season is over on October 21st. Only one team goes into Inter "A" play-offs and that is the club finish- ing first. The league is as tight as Yankees in the World Series, if the Phils had Curt Simmons, we'd give them a chance; the Yanks didn't last week either, but, as usual, the series team that gets the steadiest pitch- ing and it looks as if Jim (74 games) Konstanty will get when the Kids have to face Rizzu- to, Berra, Bauer -- five hitters in a row who can bust up a ball game. But you can't say it wasn't Even-Stephen -- last year the Phils carried the Brooks to the 10th inn- ing of the final day before they es- caped a playoff. This year the Dod- gers did the same thing to the Phils. Of course, it may have been mere- ly that the Brooklyn players really listened to Branch Rickey's expla- nation of why he is selling his stock in the club. Remember Branch said nobody can live on his salary these days; he has to have some extra income, the Dodgers know all about the salaries Rickey pays, so natur- ally they were after a World Series shot for the "extras."
