WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1950 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE SEVEN In The Home ~ OF INTE let BEAUTY FOR YOU :- Best Foot Forward By HELEN Do you realize that your feet, that carry you about all the day long, are one of the most marvelous mechanisms in nature? Would you recognize a perfect foot if you were fortunate encugh to see one. Ninety per cent of the middle-aged sisters suffer from various foot ills--corns, callouses, ingrowing nails, minor deformities--many of whioli are due directly to ill-fitting shoes. With most of us it is a matter of what kind of shoe looks smart. Comfort and foot health are over- looked, which seems pretty sense- pss. The care you give your feet and the selection of proper shoes for every occasion is essential to health, efficiency, and physical activities in all walks of life. Good feet help to prevent accidents. If they are not in condition, no woman can expect' to carry herself beautifully, to have style or grace of movement. If they are painful, the sweetest disposi- tion may curdle. When your feet hurt, you hurt all over. A large percentage of women hobble in- stead of locomoting with a light step. If you are about to sally forth to buy new shoes, be sure you have the proper size of shoe with flexible leather soles. The shoes you should wear should, be determined by the type of feet you have. There are shoes for walking, dancing, golfing, and for comfortable wear in the home. Shoes should be wide enough to avoid treading over the outer edge of the leather sole. They should be ong enough so you can wiggle your es and, by the way, you should ggle them while lying in bed at ight; that habit affords them a ertain amount of exercise. If your oes have gone into a huddle, you will know that you have not only meglected them, but have abused em. If you are suffering from any minor deformities, your chiropodist or podiatrist will gladly discuss your shoe problems and suggest the JAMESON ~ [a MND VAITING RUM LR Distributed by King Features Syndicate. Ninety per cent of middle-aged, women suffer from foot ills. * correct styles. Chances are, how- ever, if you are the average woman, you will do what the majority of shoppers do -- seek a mode that makes your feet appear attractive without regard to hygienic condi- | tions. Never wear the same pair of shoes two days in succession. Change your stockings every day. If the soles of your feet burn, fric- tion them with a foot' powder; put some of the powder in your shoes. Now and then give your feet a brisk massage with mineral oil; it will keep the skin from getting dry. WHAT SHOULD 1 DO ABOUT :- Planning Home Coming Party? By MRS. CORNELIUS BEECKMAM [Dear Mrs, Beeckman: My mother arrived home three eeks ago from Europe where she had a 5-month trip. The first week he was here, she and my father nd I went on our vacation trip, and e second week there was mueh onfusion about trunks and so orth. Now we have been discuss- the latest date ' on which a mecoming party may be given for mother. Her relatives are in- isposed and so are unable to give is party. And since I am only 13 ears old, I can't give it. So Mother d I would like to know if it fould be proper for her to give this wi herself. She would like to live it. Susan L. Yes, 1 twould be entirely proper, nd a very happy plan, for your other to invite relatives and lends to come to your home at pme stated time -- for example, pr tea or other late-afternoon oc- psion. She might telephone them write notes to this effect: "I'm ome again, after a wonderfully in- presting trip to Europe, and so pger to talk it all over with my dear friends. Won't you please come to a little party vie are having here on Saturday, September----, arriv- ing between four and four-thirty? Do say you'll come, for tea and talk!" Bride's Mother And Bridegroom's Mother Must Be Dressed Similarly Dear Mrs. Beeckman: My son is to be married in Nov- ember. If the bride's mother wears a dress, is it proper for me to wear a suit? B.B. Your guide as to what type of costume you are expected to wear at the wedding is the bride's moth- er. She is the hostess of the occas- jon . . . it is she who decides what type of costume she will wear . , . and you, the woman guest of honor, must wear a costume of the same type that the bride's mother is to wear, This is very important since (1), you enter the church just be- fore the bride's mother, and are ceremoniously escorted by an ush- er (your husband following) to MRS. Be Sure With Savage Shoes Shoes that Look Well Hollywood Highlights By BOB THOMAS Hollywood--(AP)--An actor's best friend is his make-up man, says Jeff Corey, who asks for an Oscar to reward the craftsmen of the grease paint, "Sometimes the make-up man contributes 50 per cept of an actor's performance," says Corey, who is perhaps the busiest character actor in town. "He is just about the only creator in motion pictures who is not given an Academy Award. I think it's time he received some recognition. "Make-up men are creators in every sense of the word. Many of them are fine sculptors and paint- ers. They study the script carefully and devise the right make-ups for the historical period and the dramatic effect." Career Insurance Make-up men are career insur- ance for character actors, Corey says. During 1950 alone, he has portrayed a sun-baked Indian, a grizzled . frontiersman, a working man, a New York cop, and has just started a role as a bearded Moslem. "In some roles, I have so much make-up on that you can't recog- nize my real face," he said. "In that way the public doesn't get too tired of my face and I can play as many roles as I want." The actor said that movie make- up men have reached the height of a craft that began in the sixth century B.C. In the days of Thespis, presumed originator + of drama, Greek actors sought ways to pro- ject themselves to the balcony seats. Tuey wore raised shoes to make themselves taller (as some actors do today). They raised their belt lines to their chests for the same reason, and they wore masks -- different colors and expressions to denote different moods. Slap It On Movie men have revolutionized make-up in recent years, he added. "When I was first on the stage, it took 20 to 30 minutes to put on simple make-up. Nowadays, it all comes in one tube and you just slap it on. "The studio men have also made great strides in the use of plastic and rubber products for facial features." He illustrated with some of the great make-up jobs of past and recent Hollywood history: Boris Karloff as Frankenstein; Irene Dunne as Queen Victoria; Jose Ferrer as Cyrano; Lon Chaney as the Wolf Man; Ann Blyth as a mermaid. "Achievements like certainly worthy' of Awards," Corey said. these 'are Academy King's Lynn, Norfolk, England-- (CP)--The town's statue of King Charles II was recently renovated and now is considerably thinner-- 18 coats of paint were removed. EREST GLAMORIZING :- Wear the Proper Foundation By HELEN FOLLETT { Not every woman can have a slim figure like Movie Star Terry Moore. If you need to wear a foundation, purchase a good one and have it fitted properly. * THERE would seem to be three types of women as far as sartorial appearance is concerned--the lady of fashion, the moderately-dressed woman, and the one who gives no thought to clothes and looks it, be- ing badly put together. The first requirement is the per- fect fit, so that body lines will not be too revealed, or the garment look a size too large. The next re- quirement is a correctly fitted foundation garment. Only the lovely slip of a girl can get along without some kind of Supporting harness over the mid-sedtion. Without it," the silhouette is likely to be graceless. The form divine is a blessing enjoyed by few of the sisters. * Of all details of the wardrobe the selection of a corset calls for professional help. You know how to choose a frock, a coat or a hat, if you have good taste and keen judgment, but what do you know about foundations? Corsetieres la- ment about the fixed ideas some women have on the subject. If the garment feels right, it must be right, but that isn't half of the story. : The small-waisted, large-hipped woman should wear a girdle with an opening half way down the side, fastened with hooks or zipper. If the waistline is large the girdle should be open half way down both sides so it can be pulled tight with laces to shape the waist. LJ ---- Reitman's . . for LINGERIE yo! The person who suffers from such attacks has a sensation of spinning round and round and may, at the same time, lose his sense of Balance. Fortunately, at- of vertigo are often of short duration, though they may be ac- companied by ringing in the ears and deafness. Vertigo has many causes, some of them trivial and of a temporary nature, some of great seriousness. Among the latter are disorders in- volving that part of the brain known as the brain-stem. In these instances, the vertigo does not occur alone. There are other symptoms, too, such as double-vision, numb- ness of the face, and the inability to walk properly. Lining Membrane Tumors in the back part of the brain or cerebellum may be ac- companied by vertigo. Syphilitic TO WOMEN -- I ay The taste's the test for tea! When uncon- sciousness follows vertigo, epilepsy must always be thought of. Vertigo is also due to disturb- ances affecting the inner ear, par- ticularly the structure known as the semi-circular canals which have to do with a sense of balance.
