Aug. 21 (AP)--If all the distress calls at the nearby Croton Point Park Beach were legi- timate, the drowning toll would be staggering. But mostly the calls for help are simply the baying of wolves. The explanation: All the life- guards at Croton are girls -- young girls, pretty girls, shapely girls. Ac- cording to the American Red Cross, it is the only public swimming place in the United States 'with an all- female lifeguard staff. Mostly Fakers "Out of 20 yelling for help, I'd say 19 were fakers," says Irene Hall- stein, blonde, 17-year-old chief guard. "And it's not just the boys who try to get us to come out after them. Married men and middle-aged men try the same trick." The eight girl lifeguards, range in age from 16 to 19 years, have learned to distinguish between the fakers and those really in trou- ble. BLAKESLEE New York, Aug. 21--(AP)--Gold is good medicine for rheumatoid arthritis, especially when it's used early, a new study shows. The gold is given by injecting gold salts. It has been used in the United States for about 15 years against the pain$ and swellings of this crippling form of arthritis. Gold stopped the disease nearly 80 per cent of the time when used early, Drs. Russell L. Cecil and Chester Adams report in the annals of internal medicine. Early means within six months after the disease started. Gold was not so helpful if the arthritis had been under way longer, They gave gold treatments to 106 men and women and compared them with 83 others who did not get gold. Both groups had the con- ventional treatments for arthritis, including rest, good hygiene, aspi- rin, exercises and orthopaedic help if needed. Of all those getting gold, 66 per cent had remissions or relief from the disease within a year. Of those starting gold within six months of getting arthritis, 78.7 per cent got remissions. Of those who had had arthritis six months to a year, 489 per cent got relief. But of those not getting gold, only 24.1 per cent had remissions: Patients getting gold treatments won relief from arthritis 10 months earlier, on the average, than those not getting gold. The hormones cortisone and acth bring dramatic relief from rheu- matoid arthritis. But these reco- veries usually last only as long as the hormone is given. And the hor- mones still are scarce and ex- pensive. STOLEN SAFE RECOVERED Stratford, Aug. 21 -- (CP) -- An 800-pound safe, stolen Mary's Canadian National Railways depot last Monday morning, was found Sunday on the farm of Everett Smith in East Nissouri. Tools stolen from a section shed at Baden, Ont., about a week ago apparently were used to smash the safe open. Railway tickets and other papers were strewn about the field. The safe had contained about $50 in cash. A school in Edmonton is using an automatic examination marking machine for science and mathema- tics exam papers. says Park Superintendent Earl Clark. "We found them more effici- ent, more conscientious. The male guards too often were distracted by the feminine customers." No Lives Lost Yet The girls haven't lost a life yet. Matter of fact, there hasn't been a fatality at the beach since 1924, clark said. On a busy week-end day, there are as many as 2,000 persons in the water and about a dozen legitimate cases of people in distress. But so far. in seven years, not one of the girls has had to get wet in pulling anybody out.
