Lucey r Godfrey m voyage the Department of Lands and For- ests, Fish and Wild Life division, were speakers for the evening. Mr. McGillvary, foreman of nets for the Fish and Wild Life Division, outlined the work that had been done in Lake Scugog in the past four years, from 1947 when only one net was in operation until this year when 11 nets were in aperation. Mr. Wier told the members that in 1947 only about 500 pounds of carp were taken out. In 1948 and 1940 about 1100 pounds each while | this year around 10 tons were tak- en out. When so many eof the carp have been removed, it was stated, that some of the carp taken out would weigh around 25 pounds. These fish were given to farmers in the com- munity to be used as fertilizer. CANADA LARGER Canada has an area of 3,845,144 'square miles compared to an area of 3,608,787 squard miles for the Uiiited States and Alaska. Meet the Staff GRAHAM BICKLE Joined the staff of CKDO in September 1948 as'a Studio Oper- ator and was promoted to Traffic Manager of CKLB in April 1950. He is a graduate of the Oshawa Collegiate, and prior to turning to Radio made accounting his career, In his spare time he is studying with the Radio College of Canada and is also one of the Carillonneurs of St. George's Church, being one of the very few Canadian members of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America.' Off-Mike With Bernie Barris A funny incident happened on Art Dixon's program the other day, It seems that two children went astray during the course of the day, and the mother of one child asked Art if he would mind putting on a flash announcement to the ef- fect that the children were missing. So. Art did. In exactly 15 seconds a phone call told us that two child- ren fitting the description of the ones announced were walking up Church Street. Yours truly ran outside and held onto them. Special thanks goes to a gal called Dor- othy for noticing the children walk by and calling the station. That's the first time I have had an oc- casion such as the one described. Who says nothing ever happens in radio? LEE EE J The Communications Commission goes behind closed doors in Wash- ington to start wrestling with the question of whether color television is ready and, if so, whose system is best, Involved in the decision, expected to be made before the end of the summer, are many millions in pat- ent royalties. These will go either exclusively or in combination to Radio Corpor- ation of America, Columbia Broad- casting system, or Color Television Incorporated, of San Franeisco, who alone have announced completed systems. As F-C-C began its deliberations on the basis of more than nine months of public hearings, it had the benefit of an official report by a senate advisory committee on color television which asserted that color is here and that color broad- casting is practical in the channels now assigned to black-and-white operations, The advisory committee recom- mended that the commission pick only one of the competing com- panies for commercial licensing. But jt didn't say which one. It said that any other course, involving "Multiple Standards" of video transmission, would "guaran- tee confusion" among the general public and delay color development. LE ER J The Senate's independent study group was created last July by the Senate Committee on Interstate Commerce headed by Democratic Senator Edwin Johnson of Color- ado. Dr. Edward Condon, director of the National Bureau of Stand- ards, directed the survey, which was made at the bureau. The scientists who took part said in their report they had: concerned themselves solely with technical aspects of the color question, with- out reference to cost or other econ- omic factors. They asserted, however, that "the net long-term good to the public is greatest in that system which can be expected to reach the highest pitch of performance during the next few years." They 'then expressed the view that the C-B-S system, praised for high color fidelity, is about at peak performance now; that C-T-I has greater - possibilities of future im- provement but "cannot reasonably be expected to overcome certain in- herent limitations"; and that R-C-A "can be expected to im- prove substantially." The committed said that C-B-S color quality is superior to its rivals, but that R-C-A makes the most effective use of the channel space available. Once F-C-C gets the color ques- tion out of the way, it is expected to proceed to the business of au-' thorizing additional video channels and lifting the freeze on new tele- vision station permits. L IE ER Guy Lombaro. may wrap up -his biggest year -in--show business --at the end of 1950. in the last two weeks totaled 41,000. "Enjoy Yourself" has hit 430,000, with 4,000 ordered in the last two weeks. Guy Lombardo has been going strong for many years and will undoubtedly continue in this stride for another few years yet. Incidentally, Lombardo admirers have the opportunity of catching his music every Sunday over CKLB at 2:30. : * + @ The next few months will be cruc- ial months for the educators insofar as their participation in radio and television is concerned and it is im- perative that the educator now make plans so that he can make an im- pressive claim for a part of the radio spectrum for educational tele- vision, This opinion was voiced by Paul A, Walker, vice chairman of the | FCC, speaking last Thursday at the | fourth annua] Institute of Radio- Audio-Visual Education at the Mas- sachusetts School .of Art in Boston. Discussing "New Goals in Edu- LA cational Radio and Television," Comr. Walker said educational planning groups such as the Boston institute should also carry en an aggressive campaign to inform edu- cators all over the country of the potentialities of educational FM and television and urged that they take immediate advantage of the opportunities which are available to them. Pointing to FM as a teaching aid, Comr. Walker said: "Many educa- tors tell us that they are waiting for further commercial FM develop- ment and the availability of more sets before they build their own stations. I think they should do their part to put programs on the aid and give people an incentive to purchase FM sets. However, there is no question that an acceler- ation of commercial FM sets would help the educational stations. Turning to tape recorder, he said its possibilities as a teaching aid are just beginning to be tested. "This device is solving the dilemma of, how schools can Integrate into their classroom teaching and at their own convenience the programs they desire from both commercial and non-commercial broadcasting. Much of this valuable material has therefore been lost to the schools. Tape recording opens up exciting new vistas for the exchange of the cream of educational material be- tween schools all over the nation." A iG, That's all for this week.
