A dainty sandwich and straw- berry shortcake lunch was served. Thursday was closing day for the school and, though the thought of "no school" was a pleasant one, the rainy morning proved rather dis- appointing. It had been arranged for cars to meet at 10 a.m, and con- | vey the children and their parents to a picnic at Stephenson's Point. However, as the weather bright- ened a bit by noon, tables were set up on the school grounds and lunch and ice-cream enjoyed there. Later in the afternoon it was decided to make the trip to the lake and have the swim and six cars were used. During the day Alfred Newnham presented their teacher, Mrs. E. Gardiner with a pencil set, Mrs. Gardiner is return- ing to her home in Englehart and next year will teach in Willowdale, where she has secured a position on the staff 'there. FASHION NOTE FROM BRITAIN Designers in Britain have planned summer beach clothes with the greatest care this year. Every house has been experimenting with fab- rics, colours and designs in relation to sun and sea air. For the most part suits are practical. There are still a great many very brief two- piece models but there are also plenty of suits which will please the woman who does not like exaggera- tion. Screen printed elasticised sa- tin print swimsuits, guaranteed to "stay with the bather" promised to be popular. For beach wear, there are enormous Mexican straw hats, raffia embroidered bathing berets and gaily striped sunshades. To slip over a bathing suit, shorts or skirt, Dervillo of London makes a black and white striped- wool jacket with a leather belt.
