The domination of red in flowers such as red cannas, red salvia, red roses, red geraniums has been deposed as the principal color in the garden. It is useful against shrubbery backgrounds but bright red destroys the delicacy of garden arrangements which look best in combinations of orange and yellow, pink and yellow, blue and white. The most effective groupings display harmony by contrast. The above diagrams show what can be accomplished to obtain beauty of arrangement and color in your garden. Bok of Harvard University will soon start taking thousands of photographs of the milky way through a special telescope, Their research is expected to clear up a number of the mysteries of the tre- mendous number of stars which comprise the milky way. The centre of it, 'believed to be the great star cloud of Saoittarius, passes directly overhead at Bloem- fontein each night, according to the South African Journal of Science. "Many astronomers," says the Journal, "now believe that the milky way galaxy, resembled a vast spin- ning wheel. The solar system (the sun, earth and other planets) is considered to be a minor speck along the outer rim of the wheel, some 30,000 light years distant from the centre. (One light year is the dist- ance that light, moving at a speed of 186,000 miles a second, would travel in a year.) "So huge is the circumference of this galactic 'wheel' that it takes the sun, whirling in a roughly circular orbit at a speed of about 150 miles a second almost ;200, years to make one complete *sW ng around the centre." Interest in the milky way was recently whetted by discoveries in America, Britain and Australia, that strong radio "noises" are emanat- ing from there. Nobody yet knows the origin of this cosmic static. INVITED TO OPENING Ottawa, June 3--(CP)--W. Ross MacDonald, speaker of the Com- mons, said Friday he has accepted an invitation to attend the opening of the new House of Commons of the United Kingdom on Oct. 26. "Well, I froze my left foot while playing in the band at Sir Charles Tupper's funeral (about 1889) and I had rheumatic fever 58 years ago." Subsequent examination proved Clayton to be correct. Eyes, ears, blood pressure, etc. were all good. His only affliction, five per cent disability of the left foot and per- haps a slight reticence in admitting exact age. "fading Canadian Garden Service By GORDON LINDSAY SMITH Supports Will Help Winds, rains, and sometimes just the weight of their own blooms or fruits, will play hob with big plants. Unless supported often they will be toppled over when just st their best, For bushy flowers like peonies, wire bent in the shape of a hoop and. supported about a foot or so from the ground, is excellent. For slender, taller plants such as tom- atoes, dahlias, delphiniums, three to six foot stakes are recommended. These can be stained green or brown and won't be noticeable. In tying plants to these, very soft twine or special raffia or ties are used. The main thing is to support firm- ly without binding the soft plant too tightly, and to do this early so that growth will not be cramped and look unnatural. Once they start growing hopin ¥ staked tomatoes will require prufling (nipping off all side shoots) and tying once a week, Green Manure is Useful As soon as one part of the veget- able patch is used up (peas, spin- ach, radish, etc, will soon be out of the way and the ground clear), experienced gardeners make a prac- tice of sowing some green crop like rye, oats, buckwheat, etc. This covers the ground, checks weed growth and when dug or plowed in late in the fall makes an excellent fertilizer. In addition to enriching the soil such growth also adds es- sential humus. Summer Lawn Care Once the hot weather starts it will not be necessary and it is not advisable to cut grass quite so often or so short. The lawn may need more watering, however, Experts caution against sprinkling. One good soaking every week or ten days during a dry spell is worth a dozen of the other kind. Most weeds 'in the lawn are easily disposed of with a spraying or two with 2-4-D. Of course there is liltle to be gained in killing out a bad patch 500,000 SATISFIED USERS WILL TELL YOU THE ILENT GLO Oi. To hurry along the late plant- ings, one can take several short cuts. The ground should be extra well prepared and some quick-act- ing commercial fertilizer applied to push growth. Watering, if pos- sible, will also help.
