Paul Martin, Minister of National Health and Welfare, in appealing to all Canadians to support the campaign of the Canadian Cancer Society. "To conquer cancer, to find its cause, to perfect its cure is to free the vital spirit of millions of men and women the world over for a happier and fuller lif¢. The cancer control program which is gathering momentum in oun cquntry at this time is leading to ve action to get a reprieve for as many as possible of Canadians now living who, without such purposeful plans, are condemned to death by cancer," Hon, Mr. Martin stated, The Minister points out that in this crusade, the support and active participation of every Canadian is needed and such co-operation is being enlisted through the National Cancer Institute and the Cana- dian Cancer Society, who are mobilizing the public behind science and official action. "Public health authorities en- dorse, without reservation, the an- nual campaign of the Canadian Cancer Society, when our people are reminded of the treat, and the challenge of cancer, and are being urged to join in fighting it. "Stemming from the National Health Program's grants to combat cancer, a vigorous attack has been launched which is laying the founda- tion in Canada of a control sys- tem comparable with any. More than 70 major cancer research pro- jects have been initiated. The fed- eral grant is making it possible for the provinces to extend their la- boratory and pathological services, to employ and train more cancer specialists, to provide them with more radium and to establish free biopsy "services. "In making facts about cancer widely known, and in rallying Cana- dians behind those charged with conserving their health, the Cana- dian Cancer Society and the Na- tional Cancer Institute of Canada are doing noble work, and expelling seeds of fear that root in misunder- standing. "It is a privilege for me to en- dorse the appeal for public sup- port which is being made at this time by the Canadian Cancer So- ciety, which we regard as one of our foremost voluntary health agencies."
