PAGE TWENTY THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE SATURDAY, APRIL 1, 1950 He Is Risen -- Easter Lesson SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON FOR SUNDAY, APRIL 7, 1950 By NEWMAN CAMPBELL THIS SPRING when we cele- brate the Risen Lord, the birds will be singing, the flowers will be near- ing bloom and the whole world will be renewed after the long winter. We take these natural events for granted, but nevertheless we are glad and our hearts sing at the coming of the fruitful season, All over the world people will feel the same lift to their spirits, and they wilt give thanks, and hail the Risen Saviour in their churches and homes, and 'in the great out-of- doors. "Christ has risen," they will say; "we too will rise." In some coun- tries i* is the custom to greet each other with the phrase, "He is risen," to which the friend responds, "He is risen indeed!" Now we retell the great, sweet sto. of the first Easter Day: To the garden of Joseph of Arimathaea, where the tomb of Christ was locat- od, the women who had been friends ? Jesus and His Apostles went--on the first day of the week--to anoint His body with spices, which they had prepared, as was the custom. "And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus." Perplexed, they turned about, and saw two men who stood by them in shining garments, who said to them: "Why seek ye the living among the dead?" Frightened, the women prostrated themselves before the two shining beings, and the men spoke again: "He is not here, but is risen: re- member how He spake unto you when He was yet in Galilee, saying, The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again?" Then they remembered His words. All the apostles had heard Him say this, but none had believed. Hastily the women went away and fold all this to the 11 remaining apostles, and to all the rest. But these 'people--who had 'heard. Christ's. words and lived so close to Him still did not believe this thing they were being told. "Idle tales," they thought them. However, Peter rose up and ran to the sepulchre. He stooped down, saw the linen clothes laid by them- selves, and he went away, "wonder- ing in himself at that which was come to pass." Christ is risen from the dead! In spite of the terror that holds so many in its grip in these days of discords, wars and rumors of wars, we can pause and rest on this: that Christ rose from the dead, and so ma' we too--if we believe in Him. In chapter 15 of Paul's longest letter--written to the Corinthians, he affirms Christ's resurrection: "For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins ac- cording to the scriptures; 'And that He wa: buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that He was seen of phas, then of the twelve: After that He was seen of above 500 brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this pre- sent, but some are fallen asleep.' Some of the younger disciples were still alive and had seen the risen Lord, Paul says, although we ¢~ not know just where or how this appearance to 500 occurred. "And last of all He was seen of me," Paul wrote. That was when Jesus appeared to Paul when he was journeying to Damascus to LETS ALL GO TO CHURCH REGULARLY" HOLY TRINITY CHURCH Corner of Court & Barrie Streets, one block east of Albert Rev. E. H. 'If in this life only we have hope | in Christ, we are of all men most | miserable," Paul wrote. "But now is | Christ risen from the dead, and | become the first fruits of them that | slept. Eternal Youth By R., BARCLAY WARREN We are painfully aware that we are mortals. "Change and decay in gall around we see." Even the hard- est rocks are --orn away by the water. Lazarus rising: after four days in the grave still wore the cloak of mortality. He met death again and his body has long since gone back to dust. But on the first Easter Sunday morning a new order of life emerged. Jesus Christ, who was God ir mortal flesh, had died two days before. His side was pierced and blood and water gushed forth. But on the first day of the week He arose, He laid aside the grave clothes and left the tomb, He had conquered death and was clothed with immortality. Though nineteen hundred years have passed, He has not grown old but is as strong as on that Easter morn. Moreover, in that He lives, we shall live also.
