AN FP To brighten the home with a lovely flower display in winter it is possible to force the bloom on a variety of flowering shubs. Below are shown 8 varieties which are suitable After January, on a mild sunny day, cut a few branches two to three feet long. Shorter branches tend to dry out too quickly. Soak the branches for about a day in warm water, then bring into a cool room and place in a sunny window Keep the lower half of the stems in water. Arrange in pottery vases. Do not crowd as there is a distinctive character in the branches which have a fine decorative value. Planning The Home By ROBERT S. HANKS Should I heat my house with hot water or conditioned air? What shall I use for insulation? Should the basement be water-proofed and if so, with what? Is double glaz- ing superior to storm sash and what is the. difference in cost? What is Thermopane? These and a host of similar questions harass the mind of every prospective home builder and home owner interest- ed in improving property. In the past changes in house planning, design, construction and equipment have taken place very gradually. At no point can we say that such a period ended and was replaced by another, Instead, all changes have been by evolution rather than revolution. Anyone as- sociated with the building industry will recall how difficult it was .to introduce such new materials as gypsum lath, asphalt shingles, in- sulation, etc, and more recently the hard struggle of the heating engineers to gain public acceptance of winter air conditioned heating. In all cases there has been a long period where both the old and new materials struggled for public fa- vor and in many cases both the old and new are still being used. Since the latter . months of the war, our magazines have been full of pretty drawings and fabulous articles, dealing with new things being designed for post-war living. Undoubtedly many of these will eventually become accepted as in- tegral parts of our houses, but con- titions in the building world are in such a state of flux at the pres- ent time it is difficult to determine whither we are going. "In the field of heating alone the variety of systems has increased so greatly in the last few years that the home owner is faced with the problem of selecting one of several systems and types of fuel, The question of insulation opens up a very large field involving not only the retarding of loss of heat through walls and roofs but also the con- trol of condensation and the treat- ment of windows. The owner is forced to make similar decisions on each aspect of construction and equipment, However, owing to the great scar- city of shelter at the present time, it is pretty safe to say that any SO wonderfully convenient $0 whisper-quiet SO amerig_, time to come will be pretty much the counterpart of those built in recent years, and will have little or nothing in the way of innova- tions, All the houses now being produced can be sold immediately they are completed, so that there is no incentive to the builder to experiment with new equipment or material. Today he takes those which he can procure most readily in order to complete his buildings. As supply begins to meet the de- mand for houses and the public is in 4 position to do some choosing, we will see a rapid change in this situation. The builder will be forced te include some of the innovations tc attract buyers and then their value and acceptance by the public will become apparent.
