One of the barques entered--the Pamir--was manned by regular sea- men but the Passat had a crew of amateurs. "It was just luck that I was able to get aboard her," said Mr. Swan- nell, . Lack of electricity, steam heat and refrigeration made the trip a rigorous one. Crew members were rationed to a half-bucket of water a day and dim riding lights almost caused the ship to be run down several times. Rounding the Horn, of course, was the highlight of the trip. Heavy seas hamr-ered the 40-year-old, 3,130-ton barque, but she made the turn in one day. Rounds Cape Horn In Finnish Barque Victoria, B.C.--(CP)--Dreams of rounding the Horn in a windjam- mer never left Frank Swannell-- and in 1849 he made them come true. A retired surveyor, Mr. Swannell, returned here recently after a -mile, trip that took him around the world. In spite of its rigors and dangers, he said, the lap from Port Victoria, Australia, to Wales in the British barque Pattat was an enjoyable ex- perience. Mr. Swannell left here last January on the British freighter Chulmleigh and went through the 69, 3 BLOW BY BLOW... KISS BY KISS . .. Don't Miss . . . Announcement was made of the February Home and School meeting in charge of Mrs. Warren, when Mr. Cecil Car- veth of Newcastle, "will be present with more of his fine pictures, Mrs. Jack Macnab presided for the pro- gram and called on Mr. Cecil Found of Courtice, to present pic- tures of his recent trip to Alaska where he was accompanied by Miss und. Included in the presentation were. pictures of the Calgary Stam- pede, which was very inter- esting. Many of -the beautiful scenes were around Lake Lou- ise, Banff and Jasper Park, and of Alaska which is a most beautiful country and where they spent two weeks, also local pictures of inter- est. These with the talk Mr. Found gave, including some amusing in- cidents and- humor, provided a.very fine evening's entertainment. Earl Luke played a number of plano ac- cordian selections which were much enjoyed. An expression of appreciation was extended Mr. Found, and his son-in-law, Mr. W. Henry who assisted him. A lovely lunch was served, including sand- wiches, tarts, and tea and a pleas- ant secial half hour was spent. The attendance was good, though the weather was bad. We have had several days of rainy and foggy weather, with very heavy showers on Tuesday evening. Now somewhat colder, which is more seasonable for this time of year, and probably more healthy. Colds are quite prevalent in this lo- cality. Carelessness or reckless haste are the probable reasons that cause these objects to be popped into the boxes, postal authorities said. At the end of the year the main office in Ottawa gathers everything in and has a sale. The "take" in Canada for last year was approxi- mately $8,000 and the sum is mount- ing every year, J. W. Pillon, chief of the Dead Letter Department in Montreal said. Montreal, which handles all care- less mail of Newfoundland, the Maritimes and Quebec, is ahead of Toronto and Vancouver for the vol- ume of mail handled each year by the division.
