On his way to be married he was shot, a mere flesh wound, and trotted off to the hoosegow where he found he had been mistaken for an armed bandit whom he resembled. The police fingerprinted him, questioned him, shaved him, fed him, photo- graphed him; then a bit embarras- sed by the whole thing, escorted him to his waiting bride. --Central Press Canadian. i 4 Ckg G YOUR F000 MONEY SAVER 2h, Ec 2 1 | __ SEVERAL INJURED London, Oct. 5 (Reuters).--Sev- | eral persons were injured and win- | dows were smashed during -inci- | dents following a meeting held | { Tuesday night in the East-London | district of Bethnal Green by the | union (Fascist) movement of Sir Oswald Mosley. Hasty -Pees Plan Fifth Reunion Over 700 veterans, members, for- mer members and those who were affiliated with The Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment, will help Ontario's celebrated Hasty-Pees hold their fifth annual reunion this year in Peterborough on the 8th, 9th and 10th of October. Plans are now in progress to make this year's get-together the event of the sea- son with souvenirs and special events included in the program. The members this year will dedi- cate the reunion to the children of members killed overseas. Answering - the call in 1939, the then little known Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment was mo- bilized practically two weeks be- fore Canada declared war and a short time later composed almost in its entirety of those young men from the farms and villages of Prince Edward County; from 'the factories, the highlands, the wood- lots and rolling acres of Hastings County they were on their way overseas as members of the First Brigade of the First Canadian Di- vision. To be chosen as a member of a division is testimonial enough of the high standard of proficiency and training and organization of unit's ability, but to be included, along with Canada's most famous infantry regiments, as a very dis- criminating member of the very elite of the Canadian forces was an outstanding tribute to one of Canada's oldest rural regiments. Dating back in its history to the 17 hundreds and having fought in every war that included Canadians, The Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment was formed as such in 1921 and carried the name of these two old United Empire Loyalist counties through campaigns that will be emblazoned on the pages of history books forever; bringing not only world-wide fame to the Regi- ment but also the gratitude of the peoples of the world. Known as the trouble-shooters and workhorses of the "shiny First" it got to be known in the trade "that when there was a special job to be done; call out the Hasty-Pees". So well did they do their job, and so fi®rcely and | brave did they carry out their as- signed tasks that it has been said that when the history of this war is completed that it will be found that the Hastings and Prince Ed- ward Regiment took part in more successful actions than any other regiment in the Canadian Forces and their name will live and be spoken of in reverence discussions of battles take place. As outstanding in its ability to| develop leaders as it was in its ability to carry through the most difficult tasks the Regiment sent many of its own men to command higher posts. At one and the same time three of its members were in corhmand of the. First Division; | the First Brigade and the battalion; a record unique in military history. The history of the Battalion itself is the history of this section of Upper Canada and it is with justi- fiable pride and humility that once a year, this year in Peterborough on Saturday, Sunday and Monday wherever | | | «dH | the 8th, 9th and 10th of October | Calls Kremlin ni Meyer Zolotareff, Chicago news- paperman, pictured on the phone here, ran into censorship troubles when he called the Kremlin to get the "inside story" of Russia's re- ported possession of the A-bomb and the Soviet citizens' reactions to that_ofnership. After a wait of nearly 24 hours the highest he could get in the Soviet hierarchy was to a certain Mr. Novikov, custodian at the foreign ministry, whose comment on the reaction in Moscow was a non-committal: "Nothing of special significance." Oh, yes, Mr. Noviko said he did see something in the paper about announcements in other countries that Russia had the atom bomb. ; --Central Press Canadian. that it's former members and as- sociates will lay aside the menial tasks of the hour to gather tos gether again in the spirit of good comradeship and to pay remem- brance in a memorial service to those who have joined the "White Battalion."
