"There is always long, soft grass in which to make a comfortable bed, and besides, you are fairly safe from cows wander-] ing in and walking over you." tt MORE ENGLISH 'GREENWOODS' London (CP).--More than 36,000 acres of forests were planted in Britain last year, according to the annual report of the forestry com- missioners. In the two years of the big reforestation program, 115, 000,000 saplings have been planted on hillsides and open spaces. Preparing For Next Lamb Crop Successful sheep husbandry re- quires careful preparation for the next lamb crop, The Dominion Ex- perimental Farm at Agassiz, B.C. finds it matters little what time of the year it is, whether the ewes are the lamb crop just due, preparation for the next crop should be kept in mind. No time is more important than during the previous lambing season. At that time wuotes and records should be kept of all impor- tant items regarding the behaviour of the ewes, the number of lambs each raise, if they are good mo- thers or not, if their udders are healthy and well balanced, or any other valuable notes of this kind. Any ewe that does not successfully raise her offspring should be culled rather than re-bred. Great care should be exercised in the selection of the ram to be used. He should be a typical, uniform, good sized, pure bred animal, full of vigor, active, and in good bloom. It is wonderful the influence a ram may have upon the offspring of a flock of ordinary ewes. The selection of the ewes is also a very important feature in connec- tion may be done when the previous lambs are weaned and again at breeding time. The shepherd has in mind at this time uniformity in type. The more uniform in appear= ance the ewes are the more uni- formity will be shown in the off- FOR HAPPINESS PERFECT DIAMONDS Guaranteed perfect and insured free against loss $19.50 Down -- $4.75 Weekly Others as Low as $2.50 Down Credit Jewellers LIMITED 32 KING ST. The ewes' teeth should be examined and if any de- fects are found the ewes should be culled. As a rule, they are not pro- fitable for breeding after thay pass five or six years of age. Not only should severe culling be done to the mature ewes but careful selection should be practised in choosing fu- ture breeding ewes rfom the lamb crop, always being careful to retain those as near the ideal type as pos- sible. Too much emphasis cannot be laid upon the culling process. After the culling and selection work has been completed the ewes are prepared for breeding. They must be well fed and put in good condition but not overfat. As the breeding time approaches they should be flushed on some good green, succulent pasture. As many as possible should be bred at the same time so that the lambs arrive in a group and the lambing period will not then be spread over a long period, which is objectionable. As the lambing period draws near the shepherd appreciates the fact that his busy time ix approaching. He looks to the increased comfort of his flock. If the lambs are to be born in the barns the buildings are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected: hurdles, lamb-creeps, feeding racks, disinfectants, record books, docking and castrating tools are all put in readiness for the coming harvest, which will represent his profits on the business, Britain Will Test Anti T.B.' Vaccine Lendon--(CP)--The ministry of health has sanctioned the use on a small scale of the anti-tubercular vaccine known as B.G.G. (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin). | The ministry has told health authorities: "It is not yet certain that B.G.G. vaccination gives com- plete immunity against tuberculosis and only experience will show how far it is effective under conditions in this country. "But there is little doubt that at least it reduces the risk, and there is also some evidence that if a vaccinated 'person does subsequently contract tuberculosis, the vaccina- tion is likely to make it less severe. The vaccine will be made avail- able primarily for hospital nursing staffs, medical students and those constantly in touch with the disease. A small quantity will be released for chest physicians and other ap- propriate specialists. The medical schools of four Scote tish Universities have agreed to ine vite medical students to volunteer for inoculation with the vaccine, the first culture of which was made in 1908 at the Pasteur Institute in Lille, France. It has since been de- veloped in the United States and in the Scandinavian countries from which Britain will import it while research tests proceed.
