The division came in a vote at the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada convention, in which the convention overwhelmingly upheld an executive-ordered suspension of the Red-influenced Canadian Sea- men's Union, On the vote, left-wing factions of the congress, which usually travel along on a cohered pattern, split decisively. Chief spokesmen for two labor unions regarded as leftist-inclined made a right-apout-face and plump- ed for action against the C.8.U. Some others held to their previ- ous stand of backing up the sea- men's union, which had been sus- pended by the T.L.C. executive last June on charges that its officers failed to live up to union responsi- bilities. Meanwhile, rightist forces had won a major first-round victory in getting endorsation of the C.8.U. suspension. At last year's convention, the congress refused to take action against and instead disciplined some of the rightists for moving against them. . Another jolt to the Reds came before the vote Monday when Her- bert A. Bradley of Washington, in- ternational president of the In- ternational Chemical Workers of America, told the convention that unidn proposed to clean up the few Communists in its 10,000 man Canadian section. The chemical workers in Canada have been regarded generally as leftist inclined. A few hours later, William Ed- miston, Canadian director of the chemical workers, told the conven- tion during the C.8.U. debate that he was going along "100 per cent" with the T.L.C. executive for suspen- sion of the CS.U, Bruce Magnuson, Canadian head of the Lumber and Sawmill Work- ers (AF.L.), regarded as a left-wing group, also announced he was sup- porting action against the CS.U, though he said he did not approve the way the action was being taken. The main question, Magnuson said, was to keep the labor movemeut solid. Another left-wing union -- the United Fishermen and Allied Work- ers of British Columbia -- spoke against "coercion" and *"compul- sion" in the proposed eviction of the Cs.U. KELLOGG FOR ASTHMA & HAY FEVER MUST END New York, Sept. 20 -- (AP) -- State Secretary Acheson said Mon- day night that the years of warlike turmoil in the broad Caribbean area must stop.
