Ancient Scotland Is Going Modern Glasgow, Sept. 10 (CP).--Ancient Scotland, land of the lonely glen and misty mountain, is going modern. Hydro - electric reservoirs have drowned part of the historic road to the isles, but in doing so have sent electric power lines creeping into remote highland valleys. New factories are rising beside the shipyards and coal mines in Scotland's industrial heart. Miners, faced by unemployment in Lanarkshire pits which have closed through flooding or ex- haustion, are finding other jobs in expanding mines in Fifeshire and the Lothians, Isolated farm fami- lies await the result of electrifica- tion projects before following the traditional path of emigration. Population has passed 5,000,000 and is still rising. Scottish poli- ticians say the time has come when their country can cease ex- porting the best of its sons and even lure back "adventurous spirits alive to opportunity." True, some Glasgow industrialists shake their heads over the future of the shipyards, fearing that orders which have kept them working at full capacity since the war will not be repeated. They talk of a shipbuilding slump in 1951-52 which is bound to be felt in scores of small factories which provide everything from light switches to door-knobs for the big vessels launched on the Clyde. But visionaries like 67-year-old Tem Johnsten, wartime Secretary of State for Scotland, pin their hopes on developments taking place throughout the rugged north- ern country. As chairman of the north of Scotland hydro - electric board, Johnston can see a £100,000,000 ($400,000,000) construction pro- gram taking shape. When com- pleted it will supply one-seventh of the United Kingdom's power re- quirements. Larger projects under construc- tion include one that has swelled the waters of Loch Tummel so that a new section had to be built in the road that runs to the western isles "by Tummsl and Loch Ran- noch and Lochaber." Another project close to John- son's heart is a reforestation scheme that will utilize waste land and provide additional unemploy- ment for small farmers. He says it could save Scotland £10,000,000 a year in pit-prop imports. So far the Clydeside has been the scene of most of the new light industries with which Scotland hopes to diversify her basic ship- building and coal-mining. More than 100 new plants came into production during 1948. Ambitious projects are under way for the development of rich coal seams near Edinburgh. Scotland already produces about 12 per cent of Britain's coal, 41 per cent of her ships, 48 per cent of her locomo- tives, and a high proportion of other manufactured and agricul- tural products. Unemployment hovers around 50,000, about one-sixth of the total for the United Kingdom, but a the 1930s, when one-tenth of the long way from the dark days of entire population was unemployed. They will inspect various industrial and power developments in On- tario and Quebec. s Toronto, Sept. 12 (CP)~A 40-year-old dream is about te come true for Harry Warby, 57-year-old head porter at a downtown hotel. With his wife, he plans to fly back to his native England next month to revisit the scenes of his youth. Then he's coming back to Toronto and his hotel job. Sutton, Ont., Sept. 12 (CP).-- Sutton's "cooler is really cool. In fact two prisoners, after spending one night in the jail here, com- plained so loudly of the frosty temperature that police scoured town to find someone who would stand bail and have them released. Finally a retired storekeeper, David Pivnick, put up the money and let the men get out and warm up. Toronto, Sept. 12 (CP).--Len Watkins, 21-year-old electrical engineer, won the 1949 sedan raffled by the Thornhill Lions at the exhibition Saturday night --but he left it standing in front of the grandstand.
