PAGE TEN TUESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1948 Many People Prefer Blonds When It Comes To Furniture (From Home Building in Canada) So you have brunette furniture . . and now want to make it blond to blend with that new modern color you have in mind. No doubt its re- conversion looks like a pretty formidable, if not impossible job . .. but if you are one of those people endowed with a little more than average enthusiasm for such chores, then there's a blond to blend with that new color scheme you have in mind . . . need is patience, a few materials and elbow grease. To prepare old pieces for blond- ing, the old surface coating must first be removed thoroughly with a good varnish remover. Apply this in generous quantities with a large paint brush and allow to stand until it softens sufficiently. Wipe off thoroughly with rags or old news- papers and repeat this process until every trace of varnish is off. Next, wash with turpentine, wipe off thoroughly with rags and then bleach with oxalic acid which in turn is washed off with water. In- stead of oxalic acid you can pur- chase a cold bleach already pre- pared. When the surface of the wood has become dry, a finish of white shellac is applied if the grain of the wood is good. If the grain is not satis- factorily even and dark patches are evident, it is wise to use a filer tinted sufficiently to neutralize the discoloration, Follow this with a coat of flal varnish which may be waxed when dry. There -are various effects from which to choose the type of finish you prefer. The finish, of course, is determined to some extent by the kind of wood used. Newly cut ma- hogany is quite light in tone, but age and exposure to -light soon . darken it. Bleached mahogany is about the same depth of tone as natural oak. A filler and a sealer are required for this wood, after bleaching, followed by a finishing coat of clear lacquer. Up to four coats of lacquer are used; the first three coats should be rubbed smooth with steel wool and the last one with pumice and oil. Mahogany must never be subjected to harsh acids during the process of bleach- ing. To give a deeper-than-honey fin- ish to light furniture, a wood filler to match the wood is coated with flat varnish and later waxed. This is also recommended for woods which may not have a satisfactory grain, A golden tint is produced by epplying two coats of flat or clear varnish over a surface which has been smoothly sanded, drying well between coats, of course. When the last coat is thoroughly dry, rub down lightly with pumice and water and then wax the surface. As the main beauty to look for in converting old pieces into at- tractive-looking blonds is their clearness and lightness of grain, wood with dark streaks should not be blonded. It will be more satis- factory to use an enamel, tinted to match the tone of the other pieces in the room. Plain white enamel covered with clear varnish is a good substitute for white pickled blond wood, if your taste still favors the light shades. And, of course, while shellac alone may cover bleached wood in this case. Blond furniture is not only decor- ative and distinctive but it is also substantial and practical. It is par- ticularly easy to keep clean when it is well finished because in most instances a damp cloth will suffice to remove soil. Though' it is so far removed from the traditional as to be adaptable to modern interpreta- tion, it is equally suitable for Colon- ial homes. : Combining well with light blond furniture are clear and lighter floor coverings in rosy tones and' pastels, with delicate blues and greens, flesh, pale eggshell, beige and honey. Although blond woods are adapt- able for any room in the home, they are most popular in the dining room. One particularly successful use of blond woods was in a little dinette where not only the table, four chairs and sidebeard were of blond maple, but the corner cup- board, as well, was made from the same wood, finished in clear lacquer and waxed. The woodwork, includ- ing baseboard and molding, was cream and so was the ceiling. Cream figures stenciled in an all-over de- sign enlivened medium-dark blue- green walls. The floor covering in this case was dark green and cream window curtains wore blue-green ruffles. Prima vera, the name applied to white mahogany, which, by the way, is not white at all but really a cream yellow, was used in a dining suite upholstered in royal blue cord- ed tapestry. This smart combination was accentuated by walls painted rose-pink and woodwork painted cream. The ceiling was also cream and the carpet brown. The blinds were off-white. A dining-living room, modern in arrangement, became doubly glam crous with the addition of blond furniture. In this room gne end wall was painted pastel-orahge cream, one side wall of blue-green faced one of paler blue-green while the remaining wall and the ceiling were very pale yellow. The wood- work was pale greyed-bfue and blue leather upholstered the white maple furniture except for two small sofas . ...one covered in gold and one in green and white stripes. NEW UNIVERSITIES Toronto, Dec. 21 -- (CP) -- A large-scale program of scholarships and bursaries to give equality of opportunity to students of high ac- ademic standing was urged Monday by Dr. Sidney Smith, president of the University of Toronto, in his annual report to the university's Board of Governors. He said that if his recommendation was adopted, it might become necessary eventually to establish junior colleges or even to open new universities. : ROMAN WAR AIDS "Among the Romans, fire-towers and signal lights played an im- portant 'part in military cam- paigns.
