And holes in a lake shore rock, thought by some to have been used by Vikings to moor their ships are just the unfinished work of a 20th century farmer, he declared. Dr. J A. Bolvik, Professor of Norse at Concordia College here, has two reasons for doubting authenticity of the Runestone and holes in the rock. The 202-pound stone with Runic characters chiselled on it was found in 1898 on a farm near Kensington, Minn. Dr. Holvik thinks three capital | 8 _ | letters, "AVM," on the stone do not date back to the 1300s. "I have found no record showing that 'AVM- was ever used in the Scandinavian countries in the. 14th century as an abbreviation of -any name or .ex- pression," he said in an interview, As for the holes in. the rock, Dr. Holvik says he has a signed state- ment from Willie J. Anderson, 73- year-old Swedish farmer, which says Anderson drilled them in pre- paration for dynamiting. The statement says Anderson wanted the rock for the foundation of a farm house, but that after snow covering his land had thawed, he found plenty without blasting. The statement indicates the holes were drilled about 1908. Dr. Holvik did not offer a theory as to who inscribed the Runestone. 'One translation of it reads: "Eight Goths and 22 Norwegians upon a journey of discovery from Vinland eastward. We had a camp by two skerries (rocky islands) one day's journey north from this stone. We were out fishing one day. When we returned home, we found 10 men red with blood and 'dead. AVM save us from evil. "Have 10 men by the sea to look after our vessels 14 days' journey from: this island. Year 1362." The Runestone is now - at the Smithsonian Institution in Wash- ington, D. C. SOLVE UNEMPLOYMENT Only 100,600 persons, or five per cent of workers in Britain's De- velopment Areas 'are now un- employed, compared with 800,000, or 40 per cent, in the 1930s.
