Pomeroy, Auctioneer. Terms ar) ( Television On Canadian Basis Strongly Urged Montreal--The basis, of ;fele- vision, when it is established in | this country, should be as Cana~ | dian as possbile in the opinion of | the Cemadian Broadcasting Cor- poration, A. D. Dunton, chairman of the C.B.C. board of governors, told the Press-Radio Branch of the Canadian Legion here. "Television will probably be the | most important single social force | in Canada," s2id Mr. Dunton. Re- plying to the suggestion during | the question period that Canada | was being too cautious about start- | ing television when, for instance, Britain had keen broadcasting for 12 years, Mr. Dunton said the |C.B.C. wanted quick development | but along Canadian lines. 8 The enormous costs of' television, including the fact that program- {ming cost from five to 10 times | more than radio production, meant {that there would be a great temp- tation for Canadian pioneer tele- vision broadcasters to bring in United States programs because | they could not afford to produce | their own. The C.B.C. felt it was worth while to wait a few weeks or | months to make sure that tele- | vision's first steps set a pattern i for development in the best inter- ests of Canada, he explained. "I think the time has come for Canada to start in television," he said. "But if the C.B.C. had re~ commended that licenses be | granted to the six parties re- questing them at its last meet- ing, the stations would have to rely heavily on American material, and we want television to be | basically Canadian." Mr. Dunton added "that the CBC. was aware that there were risks in delaying too long be- cause of the limited number of proadeasting channels available. t, as in radio, this inevitable monopoly for a few made it all the more necessary that development should be controlled an the public interest. ° "ANGORA" BERETS Pearls.
