BLAKESLEE A jated Press Sci Editor New York, Nov. 22--(AP)--Some of the secrets of Bikini--deadly ra- dioactivity on the ship's decks, in their rigging, in the water in the rocks, on the sand, in the aid and even tramped about by men's boots --are told by Dr. David Bradley, one of the scientists. Dr. Bradley was a Manhattan District atomic bomb worker, and at the Bikini test explosions in 1946 he was one of the radioactive safety men. His job was to fly or walk into dangerous places with a Geiger counter to see how many rays were filling the air. "No Place To Hide," the title of his book published today, is his idea of what the whole World may face if it fights atomic bomb wars. One of the secrets is that the United States Navy found a way to decontaminate ships' decks of the deadly radioactivity that during the first five days after the underwater bomb fatally injured every animal that had been left on board. Sand-blasting removed the rays-- provided the blast got all the paint. The blasting was doneb y heavily- clothed men wearing oxygen masks to protect them from breathing the dust. Where wooden decks were radio- active the Navy learned that an or- dinary carpenter's plane, cutting off a little less than a quarter of an inch of wood, also removed all the rays. The Navy learned, too, that all kinds of washing serves only to drive the deadly atoms deeper into wood. Dr. Bradley predicted that plas- tic paint, that can be stripped off the ship and thrown overboard in sheets, might be a protection. Since he made this prediction, such paint has been used in labora- tories of the United States Atomic Energy Commission, and is stripped off when it gets contaminated from radioactive experiments. He says the queerest stuff turns up radioactive: A ship's brass bell, chemicals from a first-aid locker, a bar of soap. A radioactive cloud was followed 200 miles from Bikini. Rocks at the Atoll were radioactive from atoms sticking to their surface, although waves rolled over them at high tide. Dr. Gallup To Air | His Election Alibis New York, Nov. 22--Dr. George Gallup, head of the Institute of Public Opinion, will discuss the fail- ure of his poll-taking organization to accurately forecast the outcome of the Presidential election in a special broadcast on Thursday, Nov, 25, at 10:45 p.m., EST. Titled "Dr. Gallup Explains," the quarter-hour program will highlight the results of Dr. Gallup's thorough investigation into the reasons and causes behind 'he pre - election errors. Dr. Gallup will be interviewed by ABC commentator Gordon Fraser. BLACKOUT Renfrew, Nov. 22--(CP)-- About half of this Eastern Ontarion com- munity was blacked out for 15 hours Saturday when Julien 'Rivest alleg- edly ran amuck with a gravel truck, smashing into telephone and power transformer posts. Arrested and charged with dangerous driving, he was later released on posting bail of $100. WHITE Correspondent Thornton's Corners, Nov. 22-- Open House was held at the public school last Friday when many of the mothers visited the three class- rooms to see how classes are carried on. Miss Latcham, teacher of grades I and II had nine mothers visiting her classes which are held in the basement of the Sunday school. Several of the mothers went in the morning, took their lunch and stay- ed all day. In the senior room, which is taught by the Principal of the school, Mr. B. Rodney, the mother§ visited the classes in the afternoon and were even given some of the work to do along with grades seven and eight. Mrs. Hall, teacher for grades 3, 4, 5 welcomed many mothers to her classes during the afternoon. Miss Latcham is also the music teacher this year, and conducted several songs in both Mrs. Hall's and Mr. Rodney's rooms, and these were much enjoyed by the mothers, The teachers were thanked for making "Open House" possible, by. Mrs. Hircock in the junior room and Mrs, Mollon in the senior room. Friday evening Solina young people presented their play "It Looks Like Rain," in the Sunday and president, Canadian National school. The play title was a little too appropriate for the evening, as it rained "cats and dogs" and the at- tendarice wasn't as good as it should have been. However, the play wag well acted, and was enjoyed by those present. Music between acts was provided by Mrs. Dcug. Lander accompanied by Lucille Licks. Many from this community at- tended the Royal Winter Fair last week. The Sunday School attendance is improving every week. Last Sunday afternoon there were 82 present. Next Sunday there is to be a mis- sionary program. The speaker will be Rev. Mr. McLellan from Holy Trinity Church, Oshawa. . Next Wednesday evening, Nov. 24, community night is being held. All the community are invited to come out and enjoy an evening together. Pictures will be shown. This is the first of such get-togethers, but if it is a success they will be held regularly. ! It was won by S. J. Allsop, Red Deer, Alta., last year's wheat king at the Chicago Exposition. --Central Press Canadian Dutch-Canadian War Bride v TODAY Ti. WED. LOW. G. ROBINSON \ On "Your Beef" Program In Toronto today there is a little Dutch war bride from Apeldoorn who is still starry-eyed over two big surprises that came her' way re- cently--so quickly that it all seemed like a dream. Here's how it happened: One morning about eleven o'clock Mrs. William S. Barratt had a 'phone call from CBC producer Reid For- see, inviting her to speak to other Dutch war brides across Canada and to air her pet peeve in the "What's Your Beef" broadcast in half an hour. In spite of such short notice and the fact that she didn't know a microphone from the man in the moon, she had dropped her housework, bundled her two tiny children into their coats and within ten minutes was on her way to the drug store in Toronto where the program was to originate. There she met Don Sims, the show's emcee, and almost before she realized what was happening she had forgotten her shyness and was on the air, telling listeners, about her "beef"--the high cost of living--and about herself. Then came the high-spot. of the interview. With thousands of Cana- dians listening in, Mrs. Barratt was introduced to one of her country- men, Martin Knauer, a distinguish- ed member of the Dutch Royal Household who. engineered Queen Juliana's escape from The Hague just two hours before the Nazis took over the Palace in the Second Great War. Both Mrs. Barratt and Mr. Knauer were so delighted to meet someone from "back home" that they broke into their native tongue, and although most listeners couldn't understand a word they said, they knew from the sound of their voices that they were excited about meet- ing one another--so excited, in fact, that "What's Your Beef" was in danger of not finishing on time, and Don Sims had to bring his guests "down to earth." ' (Tax Paid) TILL 6 P.M. t Ll ttt eat a a loin ali i ae ii aii ali i alia a a a a a a a a a a a a a BURT LANCASTER It turned out that Martin Knauer , was on a flying business-trip to Canada, and by now is back again at the Royal Palace, S'oestdyck, Holland. In the Second Great War he spent, five and a half years in Ottawa with the Dutch Royal Family, and came to know Canada | well. He's a skiing enthusiast, as are | Queen Juliana and Prince Bern- hard and they made use of ski trails at every opportunity. Mr. Knauer attends to a number of the Royal Family's business and state affairs, and during the preparation of the Queen's recent inauguration cere- mony at The Hague, was responsible for investigating the background of each of the guests. _ His beef was the lack of direction lights on Canadian cars, and drivers who won't signal turns. In Europe, he says, drivers of every type of vehicle are compelled by law to carry signals and use them always. Because Mrs. Barratt has been in Canada only two years, talking to Martin Knauer made her a bit ' homesick; though she was delighted , to hear fresh news about life back | HEART home and speak in her own lan- | guage with someone who knows her | CAN Queen well. 1 - BOY KILLED Granby, Que.
