GREEWALD Istanbul -- (AP) -- The petri- fied remains of an object which peasants insist resembles a ship has been found high up Mt. Ara- rat, biblical landing place of Noah's Ark. Apparently hidden for centuries, it came to light last summer when unusually warm weather melted away an ancient mantlé of snow and ice. . While various persons from time to time have reported seeing ob- Jects resembling a "house" or a "ship" onthe mountain, Turks who have seen: this new find profess it th be the only object which actual- ly could be taken as the remains of a ship. Shukru Asena, a farmer who owns large acreage in that far off eastern. frontier district, told about the discovery in an unheralded vis- it to the Associated Press Bureau This is his story. Early in September a Kurdish farmer named Reshit was about two-thirds of the way up the 16,- 000-foot peak and came upon an object he never had seen before, although he had been up the moun- tain many times. He moved around it and then climbed higher to ex- amine it. * There, Reshit said, was the prow of a ship protruding into a canyon 1 in that eastern area has reported any foreign visitors. _ . In. Annapolis,/Md;, Frederick Av- ery, model ship maker for.the Nav- al Academy Museum who was to have been a member of, the Ameri- can expedition said the trip had been called off for the time being. I have talked to various old-tim- ers here in Istanbul, Turkish as well as foreigners, long versed in the lore of the Ark. Several have climbed Mt. Ararat and said they had seen nothing whatsoever that could be' taken as the remains of a ship. The story of Shukru Bey left them cold and sceptical. Irony Dept. Oslo, Norway, Nov. 20-- (AP) --The Norwegian Nobel prize committee has announced that no Nobel peace prize will be awarded this year. Two-thirds of the amount awarded for, the prize from the will of Alfred B. Nobel, Swedish explosives magnate, will go into the Nobel Institute's "special fund," the committee said. The prize last year amounted to nearly $41,000, : The peace award last year went to the British and United States organizations of the So- ciety of Friends (Quakers). Nobel prizes have been award- ed this year in medicine, lit erature, chemistry and physics. Liquor Branded Federation of Canada charged that Canada's annual . liquor bill of $500,000,000 has piled in its wake an | immense toll "in lost lives: and broken homes, in crime and insan- ity and disease." | Dr. Kirkconnell's report read in| his absence by Dr. R. S. Longley, Acadia University professor, - sug- gested the liquor traffic toll could better be gauged "if newspapers announced as alcoholic in origin all those daily griefs and horrors that intemperance contribute to the columns of the press." The prow was almost completely revealed, but the Greatest Evil | Ottawa, Nov; 20--(CP)--Dr. Wat- FOR RENT nm off rest of the object was still covered. The contour of the earth, Reshit said, indicated the invisible part of the object was shaped like a ship. The prow, he added, was about the size of a house. Reshit climbed down to it and with his dagger tried to break off a piece of the prow. It would not break. It was blackened with age. Reshit insisted it was not a simple rock formation. He spread the word among little villages at the base of the moun- tain and peasants began climbing up its northern slope to see the weird thing he had found. Each who came back said it was a ship. There is no folklore there about the ark, Shukru Bey said, and per- sons who saw Reshit's find came away in great surprise. There are To cameras out in that wild, isolat- ed country where Turkey, Russia | and Iran meet, hence no one came | away with a picture. | According to the Bible, the 'ship | in 'which Noah and the chosen few escaped the great flood was triple | decked, had a length of 439 1-2 feet, was 73 feet wide and 43 feet in height.
