On the C.B.C. Tomorrow -- For its second performance of the season, the recently-formed CBC Opera Company will be heard on November 17th in a shortened ver- sion of the four-act opera Orpheus and Eurydice, by Christopher Gluck. As in the performance of La Boh- eme on October. 20th, the singers |» and orchestra will be under the di- rection of Nicholas Goldschmidt. Terence Gibbs of the CBC is in charge of production.- The three principal roles for Or- pheus--all for women's voices--will | be sung in English by Louis Roy, Mary Morrison and Beth Corrigan. The story of the opera is based upon the ancient Greek legend of the musician who went into the depths of Hades to rescue his dead wife. Thus it is set in antiquity, the action taking place in Greece and the nether world. Orpheus, in le- gend, is the unrivalled musician; son of Apollo, the god of music, and of Calliope, musig of epic poetry. When the opera begins, Orpheus is mourning the death of his wife Eu- rydice, surrounded at her tomb by his friends. He prays that she be restored to him, offering to make any sacrifice, even to descend into the nether world to rescue her. Amor, the god of love, is touched by his sincere | grief, and allows Orpheus to go to the nether world in search of Eury- dice. But there is a condition: Or- pheus may win her back only by the | powers of song, without explaining to her the nature of his visit, and | \.'thout once looking directly into If he does, death will claim her again. Orpheus descends to Hades, and for this scene Gluck has fashioned a masterly blending of music and drama. To signify the hellish dance of the Furies at the gates, he bor- rowed a fiery passage from his own Don Juan music. Orpheus' plea for | acmittance is punctuated by shouts LAFF -A-DAY pr bs) Cope. 1948, King Festures Syndicate, Inc, World rights reserved. "May I go home? Un- der the supervision of the Canadian Legion, a parade headed by G.M.C. War Vets Pipe Band from Oshawa, set away from the Post Office and proceeded to the Memorial Library where a wreath was placed by the members of Port Perry branch of the Legion. From there the parade continued to the High School, where a memo- rial service was held. The invitation to worship and Lord's Prayer was given by Mr. P. Taylor; Scripture reading by Rev. E. G. Bruton. A solo hymn was rendered by Mrs. Frank Smith. A call to prayer by Father V, L. McGivney, Rev. W. C. Smith then introduced the speaker for the Legion, Comrade T. A. M. Hulse from Aurora. Comrade Hulse in his address called for the people to take a more active part in civil defence work, and not to run awgy with the idea that since such work is being carried on, that war is being fostered. He explained that such work would be a preparation for war and preparation in his opinion was a method of avoiding war. A call to prayer once again was| made by Rev. George Underhill. | Afterwards Last Post was sounded, ! two minutes silence observed, then Reveille. Benediction was conducted by Rev. John Riddell. The parade again reformed and | marched back to the post office, where the order dismiss was given. | Mr. and Mrs. Milton Crouse left | here on Friday, Nov. 12, for Mont- | real, from where they sail on the Empress of France to spend a holi- | in England.
