Folewing a concert tour of western Canada he went overseas with the RCAF. Dis- charged in 1945, he made his home | in Montreal. After his Montreal debut in March, 1947, critics releas- ed a barrage of compliments, among them a statement by Campbell Carroll, of the Montreal Herald, who said: "He plays the piano as & musician's - musician, with no six (months after his first lesson, ap- | | trothiness, or uncalled-for pyro- | technics, and with all the assur- ance of youth on the go.' | In his November 2nd broadcast, Neil Chotem will play Beethoven's | Concerto No. 4 for Plano and Or- chestra. Although not performed as frequently as some of the com= poser's other concertos, the Fourth is regarded as one of his supreme achievements. Its brief, slow move- ment, a dialogue between piamo and strings, is one of the most beauti- ful pasages in all Beethoven's works. It reminded Liszt of the legend of Orpheus taming the wild beasts. The orchestra will play the Over- ture to Gluck's opera "Alccsie," based, on a story of Greek mythol- ogy; and "Symphonic Variations", by the gifted young French Cana- {dian Clermont Pepin, Wins International Plowing Match RHYS BACHER of Hagersville, Ont., winner of the Esso Championship at the International Plowing Match at Lindsay, is shown above re- ceiving the congratulations of Roy. CBS To Broadcast Canned Programs In a reversal of policy, the Colum- bia Broadcastinz. system announced todays that they are now nlanningz | to 're-broadcast many of their top | shows through the use of records and stranscriotions. The CBS had formerly refused to carry any broadcast more than once. The main use of the re-broadcast | air shows will be to fill in the gap in first-class radio fare which oc- curs when the stars take their 13- week summer vacations. This will allow some of the most popular CBS shows to be heard on a year- round basis, through re-broadcasts | of some of the best programs of the past. Although the announcement did not specifically mention' the possi- bility, this also leaves open broad- casting of "canned" original pro- grams as' well as repeat broadcasts. Thus, a radio artist might make a number of programs ahead of time and take his holiday while these are being broadcast. The first major program to bes produced on this basis was the Bing | Crosby show, which has been broad- | cast from transcriptions for over a | year. Fresno.'
