The tanned maestro has come a long way from the time he and the home- town boys of Nashville clambaked as "The Dixie Syncopaters." Phil is now recognized principally as a comedian by reason of his wit- ty demonstrations with Jack Benny and the NBC show in which he co- | stars with his wife, Alice Faye. But Iie looks back with = appropriate respect t0 the days when he merely fronted a band. Phil began his career during boy- hood vacations from school. The little band played in Hono- lulu for a year, then .disbanded Winning a contract to play in Aus- tralia, Phil again formed an or- chéstra. Returning home, he filled several engagements in Los Angeles | During this time, Phil also ap- | peared in musical film shorts, one {ot which won an Academy Award. | Jack Benny signed him for his NBC | program in 1936. CBC Citizens' "Citizens" Forum"--Canada's na- tional platform--begins its sixth year on the air this week, when once again panels of speakers from different walks of life and differ- ent parts of the Dominion will ex- change views in lively discussions of family, community, national and international problems facing Cana- dians today. It is a joint project of the Canadian Association for Adult Education and the OBC. This year "Citizens Forum" moves from Wednesdays to Fri- days, and broadcast time will be 300 pm. on the Trans-Canada net- work. The first three broadcasts will be on topics relating to the citizen in his community, Further discussions will revolve around the citizen and government; press, radio and the citizen; citizens of the world; and problems facing Canadian citizens, Every fourth program, sub-titled "In the News", will bring a forum on an important current issue. For the opening broadcast, Frank Peers, who is in charge of ar- rangements, has lined up an inter« esting group of speakers who will discuss one of the gravest prob- lems concerned with Canada's fu- ture--"Johnny Delinquent-- Whose Responsibility?" In view of the re- cent wave of "Beanery Gangs" and other groups of wayward young sters in nearly every community, this broadcast should be of special interest to- social workers, school teachers and parents concerned with what to do about keeping youngsters off the streets without detracting from the fun that is a child's birthright. Clubs, neighbors or family gruops are invited to forfn their own "forum", thén listen to the broad- cast together, discuss the evening's topic among themselves, and ap- point a secretary to send their con- clusions to their provincial "Citizens Forum" office. These opinions will be analyzed and broadcast from time to time, 50 that people in one part of the country can keep abreast of how those at a distance feel about the problems under dis- cussion. Weekly bulletins for background reading in connection with the broadcast are sent regularly to those listeners who register with their provincial office. Both groups and individuals are also invited to send in questions to be answered by the speakers' panel in future broadcasts. Last year more than four huh- Forum To Discuss Delinquency dred organized "Citizens" Forum" listerting groups tuned to the broadcast each week.
