Congratulations to Gordon Hilts on being in the money in the pony race at Markham Fair, Winnipeg Gets Able Conductor From Maritimes By GORDON PEPPER Canadian Press Staff Writer Hglifax--(CP)--In the world of atusic, a loss for Halifax and the Maritimes is going to prove Winnie peg's gain. | Czech-born Walter Kaufmann-- { composer, conductor and teacher-- is leaving here at the end of Octo. |ber to take over as conductor of the newly-formed Winnipeg Sym- rhony Orchestra. "I'm leaving Halifax with a sad heart," the 41-year-old maestro said in an interview here. "But I feel that my taking this important post as conductor of one of Canada's four symphonic groups will aid the cognition in the realm of serious or- chestral music. If the move is good for Canada, I'm all for jt." Born in Carlsbad, Czechoslovakia, April 1, 1907, Walter Kaufmann stu- died at the University of Prague and later under Franz Schreker in Berlin, After graduating, Mr, Kauf- mann began his career as director of a Continental opera group and later became director of music at All.India Radio in Bombay. Through illness, he had to leave India and return to England and there again, after doing distinguish- ed work with the BBC, he left for Canada and a post as head of the piano and theory department of the Halifax Conservatory of Music. As a ccmposer, the dark-complex- ioned virtuoso received intérnatione al acclaim for his "Strange Town at Night," and "Madras Express." While in England he wrote «= complete music score for two J, Ar- thur Rank productions, "Palestine," and "Sudan Dispute." Mr. Kaufmann said the United States has more than 200 symphony orchestra while Canada has only four--in Vancouver, Winnipeg, To= ronto and Montreal. "To be director of one of these is indeed an important role in the country's musical development. Why you're like a conductor waving a baton over the entire country's mus= ical progress. Canada has much room for growth." Sir Ernest MacMillan, conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orches= tra, Arthur Fiedler, conductor of the Moston Pops Orchestra, agree that Mr. Kaufmann's move to Winnipeg is a promising development. Mr. Fiedler hearing Mr. Kauff. mann direct the orchestra playing some of his own work in Halifax for the CBC, remarked that jt must have been a 25-piece orchestra for such a full-bodied presentation. He found out later--and had to see the music score before he would believe it--that Mr, Kaufman directed only a 12-piece ensemble that night, U.K. Builder Sees Role for Big Ships Montreal (CP). -- One British shipbuilder who hopes to see more 80,000-ton ships like the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth is Sir Wilfrid Ayre, now touring North American building yards. Many believe that high costs of operation mean the end of the road for the big Queens. But Sir Wil frid, visiting here, said there are good counter-arguments to this line of reasoning. Costs have risen, he said--but so have incomes. Passepger rates have are more people wanting to travel today than ever before in history." The big | Queens are booked nearly to capac- | ity on every run, he said. "Aircraft are all right for men in a hurry but when it comes to lu= ury and comfort, there's only orf way to travel--by boat." Sir Wilfrid said that British yards, like those which turned out the two Queens, now are building 50 per cent of all ships pro= duced in the world and thus, L an important part in ar Dominion in ter fight for proper re- . re
