Divert Pineapples To Canadian Market By LESLIE BRODIE Canadian Press Correspondent Brisbane, Australia--(CP)--Sup- plies of Queensland pineapples, said to be the world's best, are being diverted from United States mar- kets to Canada. Growers and exporters are sacri- ficing the American market--made attractive by the present world shortage of pineapples=to supply Canadian demands in the belief that they will be able to hold the latter market when supplies return to normal. With Canade spending over $2,000,000 on Queensland pineapple products this year, exports have been higher than expected and have justified growers' effort to re- establish their products in Canada. Reduction of the imperial prefer- ence from three cents to two agreed upon at the Geneva conference on international trade threatened the industry, but shortage of pine- apples and Canada's import quota on Hawaiian pinéapples have off- | set the preference reduction. Growers maintain they will be able to develop their exports to | Canada if conditions remain as they are today. Rushing to work or craning their necks from passing street cars, they check their own timepieces by its long, lean hands. But in its creaky tower the big clock hides jealously a mystery of untold years, Reposing in a dusty, barren chamber are the crumbling bones and horns of a dead goat--a massive animal in its day. How the goat came to its death chamber is not known. It is writ- tensoff at city hall as an unsolved mystery. No one goes near the skeleton. The floor of its chamber is shaky-- and it's also a long drop down for the curious. The room is always locked. Other rooms in. the clock 'tower, unlike the timepiece itself, have also bowed to Father Time. Their floors are creaky and dangerous. Most, of the doors are locked. Signs warn visitors to keep out. "Old Reliable" has been ticking regularly since 1003. Good or bad weather, it tolls out the hours for Winnipeg citizens. For its long and distinguished service the clock owes much to its guardian for the past 20 years, watchmaker Willlam T. (Bil) Muirhead. Watchmaker Muirhead is a fre- quent visitor of "Old Reliable," car- ing for the ills of the ancient ticker. Each trip, he climbs up the old winding stairway to the huge face. The stairs creaking under his step, he passes the mystery goat cham- planation was told by Mr. Plercey ber on the way up. He has climbed | perspire in summer and almost freeze to death in winter.
