PAGE FOURTEEN =~ THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1948 PORT NAPSHOTS c= Oshawa Motor City Cab Juveniles took a 9-6 defeat last night at Alexandra Park, before one of the noisiest crowds we've ever heard. The Peter Pan team of Toronto brought aiong a bus-load and severals cars loaded with enthusiastic rooters. The Oshawa crowd, also ready for a rabid night of rooting, responded to the rivalry and bedlam reigned throughout the game, with Lipka, Toronto's hurler, with a very cock attitude, also aroused the jibes of the fans. Cabbies played bad baseball in the early frames, committed some costly errors and also made some mistakes in their attack strategy. Lipka fanned 15 batters and earned his win, for his support was only average too. Nick Mroc- zek couldn't last for Oshawa past the third inning and Bill McTavish took over. He did a great job too but he grooved a home-run pitch to Evans in the eighth inning, with two men on bases, and that broke the 6-6 tle, which George Brabin had created by smacking a double for Oshawa in the seventh with two men on bases. They argued lustily last night about the third game, Toronto Peter Pan manager refusing to toss a coin for the locale. However, they have agreed to settle the series at Sunderland on Saturday afternoon at three o'clock. Among 'those present will be Lorne St. John and all his Sunderland friends and relatives--all cheering for the '"Cabbles." +» * * Big games here tonight at Alexandra Park, is the Intermediate "AA" playoff game between the Wright's Hardware team of Birch Cliff and the Oshawa Legion. The local Legionnaires dropped the first game 13-8 on Tuesday night but they say they came up with a bad game, had four or five costly errors. They'll likely send Bunny Zakarow to the mound in the game here at Alexandra Park this evening, 5:30 o'clock, in a bid to tie up the series and force a third and deciding game, which will be played on Saturday. Last year the Legion "AA" team went to the Ontario finals and they hope to repeat this year. If they do--they'll have to win tonight. + J * Two other games of local interest were played last night. Herv in Oshawa's Minor Softball Association, midget playoffs, Victory Aces de- 'feated Centre Street Combines 15-3, to clean up that series in two- straight games. Victory Aces will now meet the winner of the Royals- Simcoe Hall series, which Royals will likely clean up tonight. Both of .the bantam semi-final brackets are playing their second games tonight. If the rounds are tied, theyll play the third and deciding games on Friday night, with the finals opening on Saturday. Ajax Legion dropped a tough 6-5 decision last night up at Port Credit when they met Cooks- ville in the first game of their OASA Intermediate "C" semi-finals, The Ajax boys have gone a long way along the Ontario playoff trail this year and they are hoping to tie up the series with a win in the return game, which is booked for the Ajax diamond on Saturday afternoon. Ajax was leading 5-0 in the seventh last night and 5-4 in the ninth, with two men out, when a single with two men on bases, won the game for Cooksville, n Geo. H. Campbell , * * * Toronto Firefighters, with their team-name of "Pyrenes," will open the Ontario Senior "B" semi-final championship round against Oshawa GM-Colts tomorrow (Friday) evening at 5:30 o'clock at Alexandra ark. This should be one of the best softball games played in Oshawa since the OASA playoffs got under way. JUV ENILE Toronto Team Wins Here 6 Over Motor City Cab Team To Force 3rd and Deciding Game Brabin's Triple T ies Score In 7th But Evans Homers In 8th To Give Peter Pan Club Their Victory Margin--Cab- bies Fail To Give Relief Hurler McTavish Ade- quate' Support And Errors Come In Bad Spots -- 3rd Game On Saturday Toronto Peter Pan tied the series with Oshawa Motor City Cab last night, winning by a 9-6 count here at Alexandra Park. The third and deciding game is called for Satur- day, at Sunderland. Peter Pan playea the same kind of ball that lost them the game up in Toronto last Saturday, but they left "Yank" Lipka in the game. He gained 15 strikeouts and held the Oshawa batters at bay in the final inning when they tried to overtake the Pans for the second time. Nick Mroczek started on the mound, but still could not find the plate in the third inning and was pulled for McTavish with the score already 5-2. McTavish hurled mightily in relief. but his support at the crucial moments was sadly lacking and the game was out of his hands when Evans came through with his home run in the top of the eighth with two mates aboard, to win the ball game. Oshawa seemed to lack the pep- per that had so characterized their win in Toronto, they made fumbles, and missed balls that should not Toronto were not much better. They bobbled al- most as often in their attempts in the infield. The only saving feature, for them was the fact that their errors were on not too important plays. Ler Scores First "Itzy" Ler scored the first run of the bdll game and got the Cab- bies off on the wrong foot when he singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored easily on Bell's single. Oshawa got the run back in the last of the first when with two out, "Crabby" Jozkoski singled, stole second and came in on Ted O'Con- nor's drive into centre-field. Bruno really made Mroczek feel badly in the second ining when he slashed a ball through the short- stop's legs and past the centre field- er for a home-run error. That made the score 2-1 for Toronto. The Cabbies made no answer-in the last of the second, and Toronto settled down to some waiting in the box in the top of the third to gain three runs. Two errors, a walk, one batter hit by the pitcher, and in- terference called on the catcher all contributed to the three runs. Brown's single and the error result- ing from the play of it, also aided the Pans no end. Get One Back Toronto made with the slipshod work in the last of the inning though and the locals' got a single run off three errors, to stay in the ball game. Mr. "Slipka' Lipka accounted for two of these bobbles He was really | off the bit at this point and proved it further in the last of the fourth when with his team leading 5-2, he allowed two good bingles, a walk and hit a batter to advance two | runners over the platter and make the score 6-4. McTavish hit a double in his first appearance at the plate for a very neat try. The double scored the first run of the inning. Both clubs settled down after that, neither scoring in either the fifth or sixth innings. McTavish got two outs on strikes in the top of the seventh, and in the last of that inning, the Cabbies tied up the ball game at 6-6. Two were out again, Sarnovsky got to first on an error. Hank Jaz- koski got a walk and then George Brabin hit a double into deep centre field. to score both men before him. He tried to slide into third, but the relayed throw caught him off base for the third out. Came then the top of the eighth and that homer of Evans with two men on base. That made the score 9-6, the way it ended. The former New York Giants ace did just about everything es Ham- ilton Tigers drubbed Toronto Beaches Indians, 32-12, Wednesday night, It was the third-straight victory for the Filchock-coached forces and put them all alone on top of the league standings. A crowd of 11,000 watched Fil- chock outpass, outrun, and' out- think the Combines under the flood lights. Though playing with a badly swollen elbow, he completed seven of 12 passes for a total yardage gain of 128--one of them 30 yards for a touchdown and another 40 yards to set up a field goal. He ran 56 yards for one major after intercepting a forward and even dragged out a variant of the old statue of liberty play to: set up another. The game was prevented from being a one-man show, however, by the way the remainder of the Tiger team rose to' their coach's example. The four Tiger touchdowns were shared by Filehock, Jack Stewart, Jack Harper and Gerry Walsh, the reformed English rugger player. Hoping to make & comeback ef- fort and avoid elimination, "Dint" Copeland's Combines ran into Jones, the Victory Park ace, on a "hot night". He allowed only four scat- tered hits and three runs, while striking out a dozen batters in seven innings. He 2lso issued eight walks. Centre St. didn't break into the run column until the 5th inning when Tanton walked and with one out, Winton also drew a walk. Sul- livan fanned, then Varga walked. Tanton scored on a wild pitch and Copeland singled to score Winton. They got their other run in the 7th when Winton and Varga both drew walks and Copeland again came through with a hit in the right place. Copeland had two of the hits collected by Combines with Lack and Winton sharing the other two safeties. Victory Aces took an early lead with three runs in the first inning. Zakarow singled and Seles walked with one out, then Jones smacked a homer. In the second stanza, Vic- tory Park rapped in five hits for four more runs, Kuney, Zakarow, Stroz, Seles and Craggs doing the hitting, the last one being a two- bagger.
