TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1948 &Q THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE SEVENTEEN Atomic PlantsMay Create Own Power + New York (AP).-- Atomic power plants of tomorrow may be able to create more fuel than they burn, a "prominent scientist said here. This would be a case of eating your atomic cake, and still having it. The plants would produce power while increasing the supplies of fuel to keep them going. Such a plant "probably" can be achieved, Dr. C. G. Suits, vice- president and research director of the General Electric Company, said in a recent statement describing part of an atomic energy exhibit in New York's Golden Jubilee Exposi- tion. Scientists at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, operated by Gen- eral Electric at Schenectady, N.Y, are working on this problem. It has been one of the great hopes for the future. While Dr. Suits said he believes it can be done, he did not disclose whether any progress has been made toward the goal. A recent Atomic Energy Commission report said it is "theoretically possible-- but in practice it will be very dif- ficult" to build such a power plant. The problem is to control the re- action so the splitting of the atom not only gives the maximum amount of heat for power, but also pro- duces the maximum amount of new fuel. Terrific engineering and other difficulties are involved. A -nickname for the project is "operation bootstrap." The achieve- ment would be comparable to a man lifting himself by his boot- straps. For power production, the plant would heat a fluid that could give up its heat to generate steam. Steam would operate turbine-gen- erators, producing electricity.
