Hollywood Highlights By BOB THOMAS Hollywood-- (AP) --Robert Cum- mings, who is probably Hollywood's busiest actor, is lining up a film in Europe for early next year. Cummings, who has his own film company, a construction firm and a number of other enterprises, is mulling a deal to do. "Two Hearts % Time" in "weden. Also on the fire are "Pass Word to Love," which could be shot in France, and one of those nebulous Italian film deals. There's a chance that his European Iilm will be a co-starrer with Gar- bo. Bob tells the inside of the recent Garbo signing, whicla proved a sur- prise to Hollywood. His film partner, Eugene Frenke, is a friend of the silent Swede and spoke to her about a picture deal at a dinner table. "Is Walter Wanger in your com- pany?" she asked. "I like him; he produced one of my favorite pic- tures." (it' was "Queen Christina). Town Topics Dennis Morgan and Jack Carson, the Carman, Man., comic, are seek- ing another title for their 'Two Guys and a Ga.l" They want to be "from" somewhere and suggested "Two Guys From Hollywood," but were told our town's name isn't good in a film title. Chico and Harpo Marx turned out for une local opening of Groucho's play, "April Fool," written with Nor- man Krasna. Groucho is entitled to another chance at playwriting, Capsule Review "Sorry, Wrong Number" (Para- mount) is a shocker that grips the cmotions from the first foot of film. Expanded from the famous radio play that starred Agnes Moorehead, it tells the horror tale without a chill overlooked. Barbara Stanwick is superb as the invali. who over- hears the plotting of her own mur- der. Burt Lancaster has one of his best roles to date. BEAUTY FOR YOU -- Short Hair: Good Hair Lines By HELEN JAMESON With the return of the short cut one hears the usual lamentations about the difficulty of getting the hirsute mop trimmed according to . one's own ideas. Throughout this | _gomfair land of ours there are thous- pS of beauty shop operators who ive satisfactory permanents, rous- ing shampoos, finger waves that are works of art. But hair-cutting is something else again. Ofttimes, it is dgne much too casually -- a snip heré, a snip there. with apparently no definite design. When the cash customer arranges her locks the next day she may have to do some snipping of her own. An experienced hair stylist will visualize results, He will consider the features, the shape of the. head, the quantity and quality of the hair. Whether the growth is coarse or fine, it can be so treated and arranged as to bring forth the best in the individual; on the other hand, a hit-and-miss cut or hair- do will disfigure a head that might have been a crowning glory. There are many styles of cut- ting. Whether the face is round, oval or long should determine what hes tbe done. The too-round face is improved when the ears are ex- posed, making the cheeks appear thinner. The upswept arrangement in front tends to give the couten- ance longer lines. The oval face with the extremely high forehead is improved if the hair is cut fairly short at the sides and left fluffy. It must be feather- ed carefully, so there are no blunt ends. Pin curls must be fairly simple. The revival of the windblown calls for expert work with the scis- sors. The hair is cut in layers all over the head. The length should not exceed three inches. With fair ly large pin curls the hair can be combed lightly. The effect will be that of a mass of petals. This type of hair-do is especially charming on the young thing with a sweet face. There is the long-short cut, 'pop- ular at the present time. The un- derneath hair is graduated and cut short, the outer laver left long to nceal the short hair below. This ode calls for wide waves at the k, long ends turned down, page boy fashion, For the older woman, especially if she is large of frame and in- clined to be weighty, the swirl is good. It has dignity; it is easily arranged; it is smart. It makes the heavy neck look thinner. At the right back, the growth re- mains a bit longer to drape from right to left. By havinz the swirl go from right to left it is more easily adapted to home dressing. One of the excitements of the moment is the revival of what the hairdressers call "extra pieces," One of the excitements of the mo- ment is the revival of what hair- dressers call, "extra pieces." * bb and what grandma called false hair, With little braids and coils, the short hair is concealed and an entirely different looking woman is reflected in the mirror. GLAMORIZING A Survey of Beauty Aids By HELEN FOLLETT A smart-looking compact should be included among every girl's beauty aids. * * DID you ever take a bird's eye view of your beauty aids? Wouldn't it be appalling to you and a shock to your pocket book if you had to start from scratch, get everything you need to keep yourself looking presentable and attractive? Let us take a survey. The pulchri- _| tude supplies necessary for the well being of your complexion consist of a bland soap, creams, skin tonics, powder, rouge, lipstick, cleansing tissues and, maybe at this season of the year, a mild bleach. Eye-shad- ows are almost a must, especially if you would carry the sweetly mys- terious air when faring forth in your evening togs. And a smart- looking compact is a "must" of course. Eyebrows Need Plucking Eyebrows have still to be plucked now and then, so the tweezers will come into action. If the growth isn't dark enough, no doubt you will play with the dark brown crayon. You'll need mascara for your eyelashes; possibly a little jar of special oint- ment to make them grow. + Your hair The best brush you can buy and a snow white comb! A shampoo agent, cream, oil or li- quid soap! A wave set lotion in case you. haven't time for profes- sional treatment at the beauty- torium. Hair pins, bobby pins and metal curlers to coil up those stray ends at the back. You can even have an equipment for giving your- self a permanent wave. Nail Files There is more besides. For the finger nails; files, curved needle point scissors, nail white pencil, cuticle cream, orange wood sticks, polish, polish remover. And how about those delightful bath accessories -- water softener, heavy brush, tonic friction or dust- ing powder? We mustn't forget the deodorant, so necessary this time of year. And foot powder if you are going on a late vacation. Then there is per, fume, in the form of a fragrant essence, toilet water or sachets. And, no doubt there are a number of items that we have overlooked. WHAT SHOULD 1 DO ABOUT Serving Hostess First? By MRS, CORNELIUS BEECEMAN Dear Mrs. Beeckman: The other evening, at dinner at our house, it so happened that I was the only woman at table: there was my husband; his closest friend, a famous doctor who was his room- mate in college; our 30-year-old son and a friend of his who had just returned from Europe; and a cou- sin of mine who was passing through town. My husband, as always, did the carving and vegetable-serving at table, and passed the first plate to me, saying, "This is for you, Mar- tha." Was it correct for him to do this, or should he have first served one of the men guests, in deference to his distinction? (I have not men- tioned this to my husband, nor have we discussed it . . . at table I just took it for granted thet he was right.) M.B.S. And right d was. . be- cause, in this" 'Ofie circumstance (when the hostess is the only wo- man at table) the hostess should be served first. Ang it was quick and courtly for your husband to make it clear to you that the first plate- serving was for you, not for you to pass on to one of the guests. Consideration For Passersby By Mrs. Beeckman Its very easy, and very thought- less, for a group of baby carriage pushers, bicycle riders, and so forth, to congregate in a place where in- evitably they will impede pedestrian traffic. Salutations to a courteous person in the. group who will sug- gest that they take their carriages or bicycles out of the way of prob- ably-in-a-hurry passersby.
