Sir Brian Robertson, British Military Gover- nor of Germany, have turned to the non-party Hansard Society to help educate the Germans in demo- cracy. A struggling organization, with 2,- 000 members in the United King- dom and working in associatiom with similar organizations in Canada and Belgium, the Hansard Society in turn has appealed to the British public to assist. The non-profit-making society was |. founded in 1944 to carry out "work of national importance in education | for citizenship." "The Hansard Society has the du- ty of spreading knowledge about the institution of parliament and arousing interest in that subject," it says. Gen. Robertson in a letter to the society council chairman, Cmdr. Stephen King-Hall, said the society had assisted in the past by enter- taining German politicians and others sent to England to see demo- cratic institutions at first hand. These visits had made "a very great impression" and were as im- portant as any other measure in promoting re-education of Germans, Only limited official funds could be granted and the societj's mem- bers must provide most of the mon- ey needed. But Gen. Robertson added, "there is certainly no better |' cause nor one in which a compara- tively modest sum can achieve great results." Bevin wrote that he hoped pub- lic-spirited firms and men would make it possible for the society to give German politicians and officials instruction and information about all aspects of British parliamentary e. In an appeal to members, King- Hall said the society now must ob- tain suitable premises and adequate staff. A start could be made with £5,000 ($20,000) "although £10,000 would be preferable." Membership should be raised from 2,000 to 5,000 or 7,5000 and a series of courses for . | German politicians and officials ar- ranged.
